In brief, Ellen Gould Harmon White was a woman of remarkable spiritual gifts who lived most of her life during the nineteenth century (1827-1915), yet through her writings she is still making a revolutionary impact on millions of people around the world. During her lifetime she wrote more than 5,000 periodical articles and 40 books; but today, including compilations from her 50,000 pages of manuscript, more than 100 titles are available in English. She is the most translated woman writer in the entire history of literature, and the most translated American author of either gender. Her writings cover a broad range of subjects, including religion, education, social relationships, evangelism, prophecy, publishing, nutrition, and management. Her life-changing masterpiece on successful Christian living, Steps to Christ, has been published in more than 140 languages. Seventh-day Adventists believe that Mrs. White was more than a gifted writer; they believe she was appointed by God as a special messenger to draw the world's attention to the Holy Scriptures and help prepare people for Christ's second advent. From the time she was 17 years old until she died 70 years later, God gave her approximately 2,000 visions and dreams. The visions varied in length from less than a minute to nearly four hours. The knowledge and counsel received through these revelations she wrote out to be shared with others. Thus her special writings are accepted by Seventh-day Adventists as inspired, and their exceptional quality is recognized even by casual readers. As stated in Seventh-day Adventists Believe ... , “The writings of Ellen White are not a substitute for Scripture. They cannot be placed on the same level. The Holy Scriptures stand alone, the unique standard by which her and all other writings must be judged and to which they must be subject” (Seventh-day Adventists Believe ... , Ministerial Association, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Washington D.C., 1988, p. 227). Yet, as Ellen White herself noted, “The fact that God has revealed His will to men through His Word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour to open the Word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings” (The Great Controversy, p. vii). The following is a more detailed account of the life and work of this remarkable woman who, meeting all the tests of a true prophet as set forth in the Holy Scriptures, helped found the Seventh-day Adventist church.
The stories of the Master-- Jesus-- are the Parables of the Bible. Jesus used practical and familiar scenes, objects, and life events to illustrate ethical and spiritual concepts that he wanted the disciples (and, indeed, us) to "get" so as to live a contented life here on Earth and with the understanding of how to be set up for an eternal life with Him.
Ellen White does a splendid job of further elucidating the lessons with Biblical cross-referencing, cultural cues, and encouragement for each of us to go deeper than the surface of our teachings. This small volume was jam-packed with information and insights.
This is a beautiful book expounding on the parables of Jesus. There are so many gems to uncover in these pages! This would be an excellent resource for teachers, parents, or pastors who are looking for ideas for lesson plans, worship talks, or sermons. It is also excellent for personal or family worship in the morning or evening!
It really is a book full of Lessons.... I learned a lot... About myself, about real Christian living, and found myself wanting to change....wanting to truely embody the meaning of the title "Christian" This book would be of much help in the Church if all members were to read it. It's time we, as Christians, stop judging each other (or the world for that matter), and just do our share in Christ's work It's time to put ourselves right with God, and in living a spiritual life bring others to God It was truly an inspirational book For those who really want to do change and learn God's will for your life, I really recommend it Other good reads are Crazy Love and Forgotten God by Francis Chan and The Great Controversy, also by Ellen G. White :)
An excellent book that opens the mind to a deeper understanding on the parables that Christ used, I got hold of this book while I was looking for the deeper meaning on the parable of the "Hidden treasure" , through this book I have been able to gain deeper insights and the call that is given to everyone to be ministers to God's children.
I would recommend this to everyone who wants a deeper reflection on the parables that Christ taught and get deeper insights and revelations to the messages that christ shared with his followers.
And finally " "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." The message in this book is like a hidden treasure, read and meditate on the words of wisdom shared herein.
Christ's Object Lessons is a very good commentary on Jesus' many parables throughout the gospels. It expounds on the ideas contained within the parables and relates them to various other passages in the Bible. Christ's Object Lessons is a very challenging book in the sense that it shows just how high of a calling Christ has put forth. He asks for self-denial and sacrifice because that is exactly what He has done for us. He calls us to do the same for others -- not to save ourselves, but to show our love for Christ and our acceptance of His sacrifice.
If you are wanting a breakdown of the parables-point by point look no further. This book is filled with additional a details that will enable your study and discussion in regards to the lessons that Jesus taught during his ministry on earth. My favorite parable is that of the great Samaritan because of the multiple characters represented and how it comments on the way God sees his lost children.
I know I have grown in my understanding of God's character because of studying Jesus object lessons. Now I know that in my knowledge I must be obedient to His Word and follow it.
I found this book to be incredibly beneficial to read. I have been blessed by the words in this book. The Holy Spirit is always working on my heart. If you want to become more acquainted with the precious Savior, read this book and pray for the Spirit of truth!
This book is very powerful and really works well as a companion to this quarter's Adult Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly. The narrative on many of Jesus parables is eye opening and spiritually filling.
be a disciple, a follower of, Jesus Christ as nd His teachings. The author uses the parables that Jesus taught while He was here in earth to guide us into safe paths for our life.
I recommend this book as a must in your library. This one and two others. They are "The Great Controversy" and "Steps to Christ" for a Spirit filled life.
Lots of new angles to contemplate scripture from. I feel like I learned a lot and had my eyes and mind opened to new directions I've never been before in my faith!
A tough read, probably because it points out so clearly the changes I need to make in my own life. This was probably my 3rd attempt to complete the book. It was worth it.
This little book will fill your heart with a knowledge of Gods love like none other. Each chapter sheds a little more light into the lessons Christ was teaching. The final chapter will inspire you like none other to "let your light shine" and as you do you realize its His light, and you will feel the Glory of the Lord come upon you. There is so much love in this book for the Lord and for people. You will be inspired to look more and more to that day when we will see Him coming for us and we will say "Lo this is our God and He will save us."
An in-depth explication of many of the parable of Jesus. I have no quibble with the interpretations, but find White's late-19th century vocabulary to be a bit distancing. I'm sure there must be versions out there containing modernized language; it would be interesting to read one and compare.
Wonderful lessons. White clearly states the gospel message and that all Christians are called to love and tell others how they need Christ, building Christ's kingdom on earth.
