Dog isn't very smart, but he loves to garden. When he catches the pesky rabbits in his garden he decides to make rabbit stew. The only problem is he doesn't know how to make rabbit stew. Luckily for him, the rabbits help him by suggesting different vegetables. Eventually the pot is full of vegetables and there's no room for the rabbits, so Dog makes his rabbit stew without the rabbits and ends up sharing the stew with them.
This little book is one of our favorites as it is such a fun book about a dog who attempts to make rabbit stew, but the rabbits always outsmart him and escape. In the end, he makes his stew and shares with the rabbits. The story seems to have a good message about team work and unexpected results, but it isn't preachy.
If this isn't already a classic, it will be. This very clever story has the kids in giggles every time we read it. It's fun when the young audience helps out by giving advice to the dog and/or the rabbits. And, if the kids have any experience with vegetable gardens, they'll probably appreciate why even cute rabbits can be a problem.
My little one and I read this almost nightly! She chimes in at 2 certain parts each time they come up. "with a leap and a pounce" & "Oh yes oh yes we'll try our best!" I know this will be a very memorable thing for both of us for years to come!
