Practically Perfect
Anna, a newly qualified interior designer, has decided it's time to put her money and her expertise where her mouth is. She's risked everything on buying a tiny but adorable cottage so she can renovate it, sell it on, and prove to her family that she can earn her own living. Outside, the chocolate-box cottage is perfect, but inside all is chaos: with a ladder for a staircase, no downstairs flooring, candles the only form of lighting and a sleeping bag and camping mat for a bed, Anna's soon wondering whether she's bitten off more than she can chew. Her grandfather was Sir William Gordon-Cumming. Her sister is fellow writer Jane Gordon-Cumming. Katie married Desmond Fforde, cousin of the also writer Jasper Fforde. She has three children: Guy, Francis and Briony and didn't start writing until after the birth of her third child. She has previously worked both as a cleaning lady and in a health food cafe.
Published since 1995, her romance novels are set in modern-day England. She is the founder of the "Katie Fforde Bursary" for writers who have yet to secure a publishing contract. Katie was elected the twenty-fifteenth Chairman (2009-2011) of the Romantic Novelists' Association. She is delighted to have been chosen as Chair of the Romantic Novelists' Association and says, "Catherine Jones was a wonderful chair and she's a very tough act to follow. However, I've been a member of the RNA for more years than I can actually remember and will have its very best interests at the core of everything I do."
Katie lives in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England with her husband, some of her three children and many pets. Ab und zu liebe ich sie: Die kitschige Bücher, die in tollen Landschaften spielen und bei denen es zwar immer irgendwie Chaos gibt, am Ende aber alles gut ausgeht. Aus diesem Grund griff ich auch zu diesem Buch - und wurde leider etwas enttäuscht.
Alles fängt noch ganz gut an: Anna kauft sich ein Cottage, das sie aufwendig renovieren will. Auf einmal taucht Rob auf, vom Denkmalschutz, und macht ihre Pläne kaputt. Aber keine Sorge: Es wird einfach ein bisschen umgeplant und weiter gehts. Nicht den Hauch einer Spannung, nicht den Hauch von Problemen, die gelöst werden müssen oder ähnliches. Irgendwie geht nämlich gar nichts schief. Alles läuft wie am Schnürchen. Immer.
Zwischendrin war ich davon echt genervt. Sie renoviert seiten- ach was sag ich, kapitellang ihre Treppe. Aber auch da gibt es keine Probleme. Für mich wurden wirklich komplett unwichtige Dinge ausführlich geschildert, andere Sachen, die ich als sehr wichtig empfand (zum Beispiel Trennungen), wurde in wenigen Sätzen abgehandelt. Das war wirklich enttäuschend.
Gegen Ende kommt dann mal ein bisschen Action in das Buch rein, aber hier benimmt sich die sonst so selbstbewusste Anna wie ein Naivchen, was sie mir nicht gerade sympathischer gemacht hat.
Insgesamt hat mir sehr wenig gefallen - leider. Der Schreibstil ist ganz nett und sehr flüssig. Auch die Beschreibung der Landschaft ist toll, da möchte ich gleich wieder nach England. Mehr konnte ich dem Buch aber nicht abgewinnen. Deswegen nur 2 Sterne.
