Jamee Wills never expected Vanessa Pierce and her friends to go this far. The trouble starts at cheerleading practice when Vanessa begins teasing Angel McAllister, a shy new girl at Bluford High. When the insults turn nasty, Jamee tries to stop them. She wins Angel's friendship but makes many enemies. Now Jamee is a target, and someone is texting lies and pictures of her all over school. Unwilling to tell her family or snitch on her fellow cheerleaders, Jamee is cornered. Will her next move solve her problems--or make them worse?

Have you ever had a sister/brother in school that always does better then you and everybody thinks you are as smart as them? Well Jammee does her sister's name is Darcy and she is really smart and all of Jamee's teachers tell Jamee why cant you be as smart as youre sister. This book is Realistic Fiction because this can happen to anybody.I tought this book was okay because i like books with alot of action in them and this book was about how Jamee was getting bad grades and her sister Darcy always had good grades and people tell her why cant you be as smart as your sister and she has to bring her grades up because she wants to be a cheerleader and in order to be a cheerleader you have to do good in school.
This story took place at Bluford High, her house, and her aunts house.Jamee wanted to be a cheerleader at Bluford high. But in order to be a cheerleader she had to do good in school and she was doing bad. So she was trying to bring her grades up by doing her homework and staying after school for extra help sometimes. Then she started going to cheerleading tryouts to see if she was good enough for the team. Conflict Person vs self because she has to make her own decisions if she wants to make the team she has to bring her grades up. The main Character is Jamee,Darcy (jamee's sister), Veronica student at Bluford high.
I was surprised when the teachers were telling her why cant you be as smart as your sister Darcy. I tought that was pretty mean to say that to her because its like if there saying why are you so dumb. That affected Jamee in the story because she felt bad and she got mad. The main Characters problem is getting bad grades in shool because if she has bad grades she cant join any school programs. This affected her in the story because she wanted to tryout for the cheerleading team. When i was in the middle of the book i wished that Jamee made the cheerleading team because it was one of her favorite stuff to do and if she didnt make it i think she would get super sad and other people would make fun of her.
In the book they were calling Jamee stuff because she kissed a boy. I didnt understand why they cared if it didnt consern them. I tought they were just being mean and being a bully to her. This book and the book The Fallen by Karyn Langhorne Folan have one thing in common because at some point the main character was getting bullied too. At some point my brother was doing better then me in school and i was doing bad and my mom told me why cant you do good in school just like youre brother and i used to get really mad and felt like yelling at my mom but I knew if I did I would get in trouble. I was surprised when her classmates start spreading rumors and start to put pictures in her school. I tought that was pretty dumb and immature.
I tought this book was pretty good but not the best book i have read because I like books that include violence and a lot of action. I rate this book a 8 because its about like girl drama so I would recommend this to girls that have a lot of drama in their lives and see how Jamee handled her drama in school. If you ever read this book I hope you learn the same thing that I did stand up for your self and don't let people push you around and always do good in school because if you don't when you want to join a school program you aren't going to be able because you need good grades.
Reading a book so boring will have you go crazy, my book Pretty Ugly will have you excited, sad, eager, and inspired. The Genre of this book is Realistic Fiction. My opinion on this book is that I really enjoyed it. I was very determined and excited to read more. When Jamee's boyfriend broke up with her just because of what people were saying about her, I felt her pain because how can your first love ever do anything to you like that.
The Setting of my book is At Bluford High School, Jamee's School, its relevance to the story is that, that is where the conflict started. The conflict is person Vs. person because Angel and Jamee have to go against bullies at their school.
Jamee is A freshman at Bluford High School. Jamee wants to be a Bluford Cheerleader, but the way her grades are set up it looks like she won't be one. So one day she see these group of girls ganging up on this one girl at cheerleading tryouts, instead of walking away and being a coward she stands up for the poor girl. But Jamee gets caught up in more mess, her mother and father expects her to be like her sister, her boyfriend wants to believe what other people say, and the girls who were ganging up on that one girl Angel, comes after Jamee with rumors saying that she like girls. Then when Angel's mom tells Jamee parents how brave and sincere Jamee were they finally decide that she could be on the cheerleading team and they understood that Jamee is not going to always be like Darcy, Smart and independent.
I can relate to the character, Jamee, because when i was in 4th grade this girl was getting bullied in gym class for being skinny and not knowing how to do things. I stood up for the girl and told the bullies to leave her alone, and then they started to pick on me for a while and I told the teachers and they left us alone. The character Jamee and I are similar because both of our parents do not understand, and they do not like to listen to our explanation when they think we are doing something bad when we were actually doing something smart. Like in the book when Jamee wanted to explain to her parents the reason she was skipping her classes to help her get better grades, and to go to cheerleading practice, was to stand up for Angel Mcollister.
I was surprised when Jamee stood up for Angel because in other books related to this book the person would just run and tell the teacher. I do not know about anyone else but i'll like for someone around my age to stand up for me. Just like when we went to the assembly, half of the school suggested when they get bullied they'll rather have someone similar to there age to stand up for them. I was convinced by this passage because it shows me how to be a better person. Also treat people how the way I want to be treated, because there is a 50% chance someone is not going to like what and how I do things but if I don't give them the satisfaction they'll leave me alone. That's exactly what Jamee did. I give her props.
In conclusion, on a scale 1 through 5, I rate this book as an 5 because not only that I liked it, I really could relate to the characters. I recommend this book to the people who are struggling in their life because this book might help you with your problems. So if you want to read a more relating book to yourself. Stop by the library you probably don't have anything else to do. Hehe!
The novel Pretty Ugly is mainly about Jamee Willis a student at Bluford High School, who is struggling with friend, family, and school work issues. Her parents seem to not want to listen to her because they are so caught up in her older sister Darcy's college plans, and all this college talk is really irritating Jamee. At school her grades are falling apart because cheerleading tryouts are coming soon and Jamee wants to be a Bluford cheerleader, but she also needs to retake a math test she failed so that she pass the 9th grade and be a bluford cheerleader. In the novel Jamee meets a new student named Angel and Jamee friends her but,a group of girls named vanessa,Tasha,Kym start being very cruel to angel and jamee sticks up for Angel everytime the 3 girls bother Angel, but it suddenly turns ugly when one of the 3 girls take a false photo of Angel and Jamee. It's really a good book i hope you enjoyed my book review.
First book I read from the bluford series and loved it . I like reading books about realistic fiction, drama and love this is a great book to read when your going through a lot especially in school , takes your mind off things .
Quick palette cleanser between novels. Read in one sitting. This was my first read from this author in the Bluford Series installment. It definitely had a better pacing. Jamee working my damn nerves though lol
Siblings can be the worst and best at times. In this case there are two sisters, one younger and one older. The older one is excellent at school, very good grades, one of the best students. On the other hand, the younger one isn't too good at school, she struggles. When she enters high school, everyone has expectations set for her because of how great her sister is. Jamee is tired of people judging her because of her sister. At home, all her parents talk about is her sister and how good she is doing, and Jamee is just there. Her older sister is better at everything but there is one thing she can't do so Jamee decides to do it. Cheerleading is all Jamee is focused on, that's her thing. One thing she can do better than her sister. Throughout the time conflicts come by between friends, grades, and school.
So this is a little interesting read I found discarded in someone’s classroom library—it was a little used and abused but with a very interesting title and premise I thought would make a cute in-between read from some of the longer books on my imposing To-Be-Read list..Seriously I will have something to read for the rest of my life as I keep buying and “accumulating” more—I love a book challenge.. Okay so I have heard of this Bluford High series as a look at the problems and situtationships kids deal with going to an inner-city high school and is well written and real..this is the eighteenth book in the series—jeez but I enjoyed it so I will read another before deciding if its worth an investment for the elementary/middle school I work for.. Alright onto the story finally LOL---this one’s main character is Jamee Wills who is entering her first year of high school is dealing with tougher academics, cheerleading and peer pressure with some mean girls, her boyfriend and her dating past and living up to the shadow of her brilliant overachieving older sister..what makes her even more relatable is that her mom is pregnant so she is becoming that all too familiar attention seeking middle child…. I thought her struggles were truly in tune with issues that any young girl goes through and the feelings of resentment and being compared came through vividly and made Jamee a girl you want to know about.. “It seemed as if everyone was pressuring her to be somebody else. Her family and teachers wanted her to be Darcy, Vanessa wanted her to be like Tasha and pick on Angel for no reason. Dez wanted her to be the girl with the bad reputation.” (Pg. 97) Jamee however just wanted to be who she is and do what she enjoyed which is cheerleading..Jamee's life starts getting tough with her failing Algebra test and then when a picture implicating a fake lesbian relationship surfaces which hurts her and also further damages an unpopular girl’s reputation which forces her off the cheerleading squad.. Jamee has a really hard decision to make after skipping tutoring help for two consecutive days to practice for tryout for cheerleading and her algebra retake is on the same day of tryouts which leads to her big decision...I can really see kids wanting to know what she does, what they would do and how standing up for yourself and being a good person can be just as important as getting good grades..Real teen moral questions and segments on bullying and reputation—great discussion points for my 6th graders..
Have you ever had a sister/brother in school that always does better then you and everybody thinks you are as smart as them? Well Jamee does her sister's name is Darcy and she is really smart and all of Jamee's teachers tell Jamee why cant you be as smart as your sister. This book is Realistic Fiction because this can happen to anybody.I thought this book was very good and awesome because I love books with a lot of action in them and this book was about how Jamee was getting bad grades and her sister Darcy always had good grades and people tell her why cant you be as smart as your sister and she has to bring her grades up if she wants to make the cheer squad.

I was surprised when the teachers were telling her why cant you be as smart as your sister Darcy, I thought that was pretty mean. What i really understood why Jamee was standing up for once to her friend Angel(a girl that really didn't have no friends and was very shy) and tell them to leave and stop messing with her. The main Characters problem is getting bad grades in school because if she has bad grades she cant join any school programs.
I thought this book was pretty good and i rated it a 5 star because I like books that have drama and a lot of action. I rate this book also a 5 because the girls drama is like real life problems people would so I would recommend this to girls that have a lot of drama in their lives and see how Jamee handled her drama in school. If you ever read this book I hope you learn the same thing that I did stand up for your self and don't let people push you around and always do good in school because if you don't when you want to join a school program you aren't going to be able if you are not then no team for you.
In this book Pretty Ugly this is Jamee's freshmen at Bluford High. Jamee is feeling good about this year and is coming into the year confidently. She didn't really know that when she was in the middle school she did things that gave her a bad reputation, like kissed a boy she did not know and went out with Bobby Wallace, a student that wasn't liked. Since her big sister went to this school, a lot of people know Jamee because of her sister Darcy. Darcy had a good reputation so everyone is expecting Jamee to be like her sister.
so far I like the book because I like Jamee's attitude towards people because what she say to people is true and she speaks her mind no matter what. I also like that she sticks up for people because she cares about people. What I don't like about Jamee is that she does not get good grades and she don't care she cares about cheerleading more than a grade.
This book is about a freshman in Bluford High School named Jamee. Living in the shadow of Darcy Wills, her sister (Junior) she has to find a way to be noticed and stop being associated with her sister, and the only way to do that is to join the cheerleading team (the one thing that Darcy cant compete with her in). Jamee joins with her friends and meets a new girl named Angel. Angel is a weak girl who everyone likes to pick on (your typical high school story). As the story goes on Jamee becomes friends with Angel so that she won’t feel alone, and of course the main girl picking on Angel (Vanessa) uses this to her advantage to try to get both girls off of the team. Vanessa becomes an evil conniving person that humiliates both girls. However in the end both Jamee and Angel win and Vanessa is left with nothing.
I didnt really like how at the beginning they talked about cheerleading which seemed like went on for forever.I would have to say that I would of been like Jamee in this book. When it came to Angel and all. There is always rumors going around about someone in high school or someone getting picked on and someone needs to do something about it. In this book I can understand how Jamee could get tired of being compared all the time but I think she was out of line at the end of Ch. 6. As far as there aunt Charlette goes, I wouldnt like her either. I dislike people that act like that. I like the coach in this book. I can also relate to Jamee when it came to school. I wasnt as bad but I can relate to some stuff. I thought CH.10 and the ending was okay but I rate this book a 4 :)
VANESSA WAS TEASING ANGEL IN CHEERLEADING PRACTICE,SHE COULDN'T TAKE IT SO SHE PUNCHED VANESSA. ANGEL GOT SUSPENDED BUT SHE HER REVENGE.AFTER SCHOOL VANESSA WENT TO MEET UP WITH HER FRIENDS. THEY PLANNED TO JUMP ANGEL, BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW SHE TOOK KARATE. THEY GOT BEAT HARDER THAN WE SWAT ANTS THAT CLIMB ON US. GO ANGEL WHHHHOOOOOOO. WHHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S THIS IS MY #1 FAVORITE BLUFORD SERIES BOOK PRETTY UGLY
I thoroughly enjoyed Pretty Ugly, one of the books in the Bluford High series. From the first chapter, it took me back to the YA books I enjoyed reading when I was in middle and high school (titles like Sweet Valley Twins and High and the Taffy Sinclair and Fabulous Five series.) I still have a lot of those books and I do pull them out to nostalgically read from time to time. As a high school cheerleader myself, I connected with the anxiety of tryouts and the need to balance those extra curriculars with time to study.
I really felt for the main character Jamee Wills and her feelings throughout much of this book. She felt ignored by her family, and, for the most part, she was. Her parents and older sister were so caught up in their own lives that no one took any time to really listen to Jamee. It was definitely part of the build up of this novel, but I wanted to reach through the pages and give her mother a shake a time or two.
With focuses on typical high school issues such as friendship, relationships, bullying, cheerleading and grades, this book speaks to many of the issues young adults face daily. I think a lot of teens would choose this book for its universal themes. That phrase--universal theme--is a favorite of mine, but it truly is the key to making young adults connect with certain books. If they can find that the themes relate to their own lives and those of their peers, they are more to connect and relate and find enjoyment in their reading. I also liked that any student could identify with the characters. By the cover and some early description of dark skin, it is clear the characters are African American, but this book breaks down the racial barriers as their problems and fears and family interactions are no different than any other race.
Pretty ugly chapter 1-3 Jamee is the main character and she is a freshman in high school who has a older sister which is a junior. Jamee and her sister is opposite and seemly not that close at the beginning of the story. Her sister makes good grades in class while she struggles with grades and to find her identity transiting from middle school. She lives in hers sister shadow at home and school and feels as if her parents gives her that lack of attention that she needs. She is trying out for cheerleading while witnessing bullying and trying to find a balance of doing the right thing while trying to make new friends. Chapter 4-7 Jamee is still struggling with her classes at this point of the book while still trying to figure out how she is going to retake her math test and be able to make it to cheer tryout. She is dealing of the opinions of others and high school drama including untrue rumors about her all because she is standing up against seeing angel get bullied. Her feelings remain the same about her homelife throughout these chapters. Chapter 8-10 In conclusion, of this story 0her parents found out about her grades, she made the cheer team, and the cheer coach and principle found out about her and the girl angel getting bullied online. They ended up getting the girls who were doing the bullying kicked off the team. Her parents finally heard her out and listened to her express her emotions and apologized for the emotional damage that the were bringing to her life but still expected her to bring her grades up.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jamee Willis is not anything like her older sister, Darcy Willis. Darcy is the perfect student, the perfect daughter, and the perfect worker and Jamee is, well, just Jamee. She’s constantly compared to her sister and she has long known that she would never live up to her sister and her being “Darcy’s sister” will continue as long as she’s at Bluford High. Jamee wants that to change by trying out for cheerleading with long time friend Amberlynn. She meets Bluford transfer, Angel, and that’s when she has noticed that the other girls are bullying Angel. While I tried to sympathize with Jamee’s story, I just couldn’t excuse her for not opening her mouth and tell her parents what’s going on. She’s in the midst of changing roles from youngest child to middle child so she is noticing that her parents are more worried about her older sister prepping for the ACTs/SATs or the baby that her mom is pregnant with. However, talking to Darcy has always been an option. She pushed Darcy away because she didn’t want Darcy to understand. The resolution was quick and to be frank, I don’t think Jamee learned her lesson because everything worked out for her in the end. She got to do everything wrong and reap the benefits at the end.
Being a freshman in high school, having bad grades, and already having enemies, Jamee Wills gets into a lot of conflicts, from seeing Angel Mcallister getting bullied from Vanessa Perice, to her being a next target to get bullied by Vanessa, jamee fights a lot to get out of this conflict. I really enjoyed this book. It had many sad a gappy moments like Jamee and Angel making the cheer team and getting the upper hand and the end of the book to get Vanessa introuble for all the bad things shes done. there were many sad parts like pictures getting sent that are fake, both angel and jamee getting bullied, to jamee almost failing her claseses.I think this book was really good in my opinion, you can see how jamee fights through all this and later wins this intense battle she has with Vanessa Perice.
With conflicts such as bullying, rumors being spread and the fear of standing up for herself, a reader can tell it's a coming of age story. In the book the protagonist Jamee is written with a boyfriend, Dez. Although Jamee is bothered by Dez, I like him due to the fact he was trying to help her. He for real deserved better. Every time he tried to talk to her to try and help Jamee would find a way to make it about herself. This brought my liking towards Dez up, which it brought it down towards Jamee. I would recommend this book to other students. With the main character being around our age or even the same exact age, we see sort of similar problems students might face as well. I even found myself relating to the characters in this book more than I had expected. With that being said the book was a good 8/10. :)
Pretty Ugly is a book about a girl named Jamee Wills. As life isn't hard enough, she has to deal with mean girls. The book is written very well but at some points along the way, it was hard to picture some parts of the book. Other than that, the author Karyn continues the book perfectly. You are introduced to all of Jamee's problems. Algebra or family, you are able to feel the stress on Jamee's shoulders. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys drama.
I enjoyed this book. It was about this girl name Jamee and she was going through a lot at school and at home. At school she was freinds with the mean girl and who the mean girl was mean to. Then at home nobody cared about her. I reccomend this book to 7 and older you learn a lot if lessons by reading it.
I liked this book because it had a lot of suspense. The theme of this book is sometimes you have to sacrifice what you need. The author's Purpose is to entertain the reader because this never happened and this was not real. The authors point of view is first person because Jamme is explain her life in first person. The main characters are Jamme, Darcy, There mom and dad, vanessa, Angel.
This book is homophobic, treats being queer as if it’s some scandal, and treats academics like they don’t matter. It’s jock worship in the worst taste, and if you don’t want your kid pinning their hopes on making the NFL or something equally ludicrous I’d suggest not giving this to them
The book was an easy fast paced read, it mostly involved a rumor regarding lesbianism and pretty much the climax of the story. The character development was okay, the mom is pretty annoying throughout the book and the teacher as well.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Pretty ugly had a very interesting/odd plot throughout the book and hard to understand the reasoning behind the book. Jamee a freshman in high school is faced with many conflicts throughout the story, conflicts involving her teacher, parents, and bullies. Jamee struggles with bad grades and her family not paying attention to her feeling and her only way out of that is cheerleading. During James's tryouts for cheerleading, she finds people picking on a girl named angel and decides to stand up for her which causes her to be involved in the drama around the school. Jamee and angel, later on, find relief from there problems. I enjoyed the book because I found it pretty suspenseful at times and was a pretty easy book to read and understand. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't like to read long books and likes books that have a positive theme.
