"The Long White Cloud" is a history of New Zealand written in 1898. It chronicles the colonization of this small island nation and gives a relatively objective view point of the Colonial doings. Thoroughly entertaining for a history tome, the early chapters on the history of the Maori's are especially enlightening. Only moderately supercilious, Pember Reeves is fair in is assessment of the indigenous people, and gives due respect to their culture. The book does bog down when the Parliamentary and governmental histories are explored. A fascinating look at a new nation, a description of history as it is being made. Note: I especially enjoyed his "bibliography", a combination of sources and critiques of the writing styles of the source writers, all in one.
It's really interesting to read a history book that was written over 100 years ago. A concise view of New Zealand from the time of the first settlers. Fascinating to read perspectives of leaders of the time, from someone who was there, which is subtly different from the way they are viewed today, or even when I was studying history at school. A good read, even if just for the sake of reading something so old.
I didn't actually read this book. I read "the long white cloud" by Ray Mount Rogers, but it's not logged in here. OCD me needs to log the book in the thing.
