Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.

Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.

Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.

A good idea and kids will learn a little about what Treasure Trove means, but towards the end it got a bit tiresome with the sudden "exact amount" coincidences - Ben finds 25 Sovereigns worth £2000, later his mum n dad's car gets in an accident which will cost them exactly £2000 to repair the damage... They look at a holiday in Majorca which will cost them £1000, the coin dealer suddenly finds a buyer who will pay £3000 for the coins - coincidentally exactly £1000 more than they were previously told they'd get...

This was a pleasant read, fairly good story and had some educational value. It's about a boy who finds a bag of old coins under a floorboard in his house. It triggered some discussion about money and coin collecting, and motivated my daughter to go count up her coins. Now this week we've heard they are taking the Canadian penny out of circulation so some of the ideas have come back in our conversations. Nice ending.
