Rate this book
The Monster High ghouls are back and more spooktacular than ever in this all-new, original middle grade series set in the world of Nickelodeon’s animated show and written by Adrianna Cuevas!

As Monster High prepares for its annual talent show, Frankie Stein is left wondering what they could perform. When Torelei Stripe mocks Frankie’s music playing abilities, Frankie is left even more confused about which of their brain parts is exciting enough for the talent show.

Luckily, Headmistress Bloodgood presents Frankie with new information about their brain that might hold the answer. Except Frankie discovers that their brain part is from a disgraced scientist accused of unethical experiments. Plagued by dreams from the scientist’s life, Frankie teams up with Draculaura and Clawdeen to discover the truth about their past—and save Monster High in the process.

While I'm not sold on all of the changes from the OG Monster High (bring back kind and calm Lagoona!), I do appreciate a lot of them. Frankie now uses they/them pronouns and is written in a way that could be interpreted as ADHD (or possibly AuDHD), while Twyla is either on the autism spectrum or anxious with sensitivity issues, such as sound. Toralei's bullying is given a reason - her parents rarely express approval - without it being hand-waved away, and Cleo is a much nicer person in general and more in keeping with Egyptian mythology. I also like Deuce and Manny's rewrites; they're much less stereotypically masculine now.

Even without these considerations, this is particularly well-written. It certainly would have helped me feel seen (see: the second option for Twyla's traits) and the story is engaging and a lot of fun. I may still love my original ghouls, but this is a good direction for the franchise to take, and hopefully no political nonsense will stop it from being there for the kids who need to feel like they belong.

“For all the kids figuring out who they are and looking for a place to belong.”

As a whole, I enjoyed this!

However, it was a lot darker than I expected! The cover and initial description feel misleading compared to what the actual plot is.

CW/TW: discussion/descriptions of experiments on monsters and humans, death, bullying.

It’s supposed to be set during Frankie’s first month of life, and even references things that happen in the show. However, sometimes things don’t make sense - for example, Gil and Abbey are mentioned even though they don’t make appearances until later in the series, but Clawd isn’t there yet. I know, I know, this is just me being picky.

For me, the strongest points of this book are what I feel Monster High G3 is best known for: the relationships.

Some highlights:
• Frankie and Deuce being beasties. Truly, I love their friendship so much and I have gained a new appreciation for it after this book. He’s so supportive the whole book even when he’s very confused as to what’s going on with Frankie.
• Of course, our main trio. Need I say more?
• CLANKIE. I went into this with 0 expectations of Clankie because truly… what were the odds we’d be so blessed? But we were! Nothing too extravagant, of course, but the crushing is THERE.
• I didn’t expect to leave this book shipping Manny and Twyla but actually it makes so much sense my brain is mad I didn’t think of it earlier. Also, I’m so glad they got such a focus! We definitely deserve to see more of them.

I’m pretty sure this is the first part of a planned series of middle grade novels for the series, and I am excited for the rest!

Książka „Monster High. School Spirits.

It’s a FRIGHTFUL night at Monster High’s annual Talent Show!
🧠
Frankie Stein is wracking their brain about what to perform at the annual Talent Show, but isn’t happy when Torelei Stripe makes fun of their lack of musical ability. When Frankie learns from Headmistress Bloodgood more about their brain they decide to team up with Draculaura and Clawdeen to learn more about the scientist that created them and how their brain functions.
🎸
Okay how cute was this?! I’ve been reading Monster High since it was super popular at the elementary school I taught at years ago. The fact that @mattel & @adriannacuevas brought the story into this generation (hello iCoffin and eektok!), as well as made it inclusive with Frankie using they/them pronouns and lots of #latinx representation made it even better than the original books I read back in the day. Kids are going to eat this new MG series up. Get your hands on novel 1 today!

3/5⭐️

"–Poza tym świat ludzi wcale nie jest straszny. Możecie mi wierzyć, znam się– zapewniła Clawdeen.

Draculaura się obruszyła.

–Mów za siebie. Gonili cię kiedyś z zapalinymi pochodniami i widłami?"

Monster High (G3) is my new favourite thing at the moment. :D

That was a very delightful read. Especially since this book was about one of my favourite characters & the reason why I got into MH in the first place - Frankie Stein.⚡🧠 🏳️‍⚧️

Very excited for book 2. :D

Also I'm very happy with how much Twyla was in this book. 💙💜♾📚

(One more thing: Those little Clankie moments we got were adorable ❤)
