This is the closing volume of the Time-Life Civil War hardback series. This volume detailed the closing of the Civil War, the apprehension and imprisonment of the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis. He was never tried, was pardoned by the federal government, and lived until 1889 in rural Louisiana.

The narrative explained the President Johnson's plan to forgive the South, his political turmoil, and subsequent impeachment. Also discussed was the Reconstruction Era, the struggles of recent former slaves, the trial and execution of Andersonville Prison commandant Captain Wirz, the 13th and 14th Amendment process, and tensions between Republican and Democrats through the rest of the 1800s.

There were lots of pictures including Confederate and Union Veteran unit reunions, gatherings, parades, and social organizations up through the early 1900s.

I thought this was a great final volume of this series. I would recommend these short but informative books by Time Life. Thanks!
