Obviously, I didn't read this cover to cover. In further disclosure mode:
I also have:
- The Oxford English dictionary
- The Merriam-Webster Collegiate dictionary
- The Oxford American English dictionary, and several other more specialized English dictionaries.

So, why is this the one I usually pull off the shelf? It rarely fails to have what I need; the illustrations are profuse and very helpful; the definitions are well crafted and there are excellent cross-references; and, the illustrative sentences are almost always helpful.

No "flash in the pan," it's a winner that has survived the test of time.

When I got home to Park Ridge from Grinnell College for the Christmas holidays I found Dad had purchased The American Heritage Dictionary to replace The Webster's Collegiate I'd taken to school in the fall. I was impressed by its modern look and readable typeface.
