Danger on Her Doorstep

Rate this book
Her father's death didn't seem suspicious. Yet Maggie Arnold can't deny that there's something odd about the old Victorian house he was working on when he died. The house that Maggie has now inherited. All she wants is to finish the renovations, sell the house and leave Holyoake, Iowa…but that's easier said than done. The only handyman in town who steps up to help her is Gideon Bromley—a man no one in Holyoake wants to trust. And just beyond every corner hides the person determined to keep them both away from the house…for good.

Maggie Arnold needs help renovating the old Victorian house she inherited from her father. Being back in Holyoake, Iowa brings back unpleasant memories for her. She wants to get the place fitted up, sold, and get back to her life in Kansas City as soon as possible.

Only that isn't going to be quite so easy.

It seems her father's death wasn't an accident; that she has something that someone wants...only she doesn't know what that is, and someone keeps targeting the basement...the place her father mentioned in his last call to Gideon, just before he died.

Gideon Bromley, former sheriff now on suspension while his brother's case is being investigated, has turned handyman as it's the only thing he knows other than police work.

The fact Maggie has asked him to help weighs heavily on Gideon...it was because he was here investigating what he thought was a murder, but had now been ruled as an accident, that he had not been available for something else going on right under his nose that he was now under suspicion for. (See #1 in this series for that story!)

Maggie is the first person to have faith in him since his suspension...and he's not going to let her down. People might not believe in him anymore, but something odd is going on...and it all started the day he got that phone call!

I loved this very fast paced, action and faith filled sequel. You do need to read Out on a Limb first, as it provides a lot of the background and detail for this story, and is where we first meet Gideon.

In the book Out on a Limb, we meet Sheriff Gideon Bromley. At the end of that book he ends up in jail, they believe he and his brother were involved together in making and distributing the drug meth.

Maggie Arnold is a nurse in Kansas City. Her father's death brings her back to Holyoake, Iowa. She is selling his rental properties and wants to fix up the Victorian house on Shady Oak so she can sell it. She calls the numbers of a handymen given to her by the Realtor. After calling all the others and being refused she is surprised when the last man is willing to come and look.

Gideon has decided to use the carpentry skills he learned from Glen Arnold to make use of his time while waiting to see if he will be Sheriff again or end up in prison, his brother had it well planned out to have evidence show Gideon as the leader of the drug ring. He feels a failure for not seeing his brothers involvement all these years.

As they work on the house together there are many things happening. Maggie did not realize anyone thought her dad murdered until Gideon told her and now that she has people trying to break in and things constantly being stolen from the house, she believes it to be true as well.

Maggie is carrying her own guilt. When Gideon's niece was a toddler they lived in one of her dads rentals. When Kayla got sick they blamed her dad and the town turned against both of them. When Maggie graduated high school she left town and never returned, until now.

A story of guilt, faith, renewed faith, betrayal and suspense and we can't forget love.

This is the first book I have read by Rachelle and found this to be a good book. I like the Love Inspired ranges and felt like reading one of the suspense line. This is a good story with Maggie working on the house she has inherited from her father how has recently died. Gideon is in suspension from the police force and is helping her restore the house he also thinks her father's death was suspicious. One of the themes of this book is forgiveness. I love how these books have hero and heroines with issues they need to overcome and sometimes issues that are not as big an issue as they have built them up to be. The not knowing who was behind the things happening at the house added to the story and I found I wanted to know more.
Look forward to more stories by Rachelle.

The plot idea was good, but the execution wasn't fully there. I have read other books by this author and they were much better than this one. I found the character development to be lacking and the way the book flows is fast and messy. There is nothing wrong with a quick read but when not done well the story will suffer for it and this was the case for Danger on Her Doorstep. I suggest if you want something a little better put together that you try a couple of her other books because they are better.

I only gave this 2 stars because I get so tired of characters that say, "God will protect me" then do something totally stupid. God gave us brains to use and the will to make a choice. If we make a stupid choice we have those natural cosequences that go with it. Other than that it was a typical Christian fiction book.

A little preachy for me but a good mystery. When her father dies it is ruled accidental but the Sheriff has his doubts. On leave during an investigation, he helps Maggie work to finish the renovations on the old house her dad had been working on. Strange things happen.

Danger on Her Doorstep had so many twists and turns and had me reading way into the night wanting to figure out who done what! Maggie and Gideon worked so well together that I wish I could read more of their story. It ended way to soon!

This book was great. I finished reading it a couple days before Me and my family left for the beach, and I just wanted to take it, and read it over, and over again!!!
