July 15, 2012The anime for this was amazing!!! Dude, who hasn't seen the anime yet?! IF YOU HAVEN'T, YOU NEED TO GET YOUR BUTT OVER TO A TV SCREEN OR A COMPUTER SCREEN AND JUST PLAY ANGEL BEATS AND WATCH IT BECAUSE IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!
Anyway, this series seems a lot like an OVA series that describes about the pasts of the characters. (Most of their pasts weren't revealed in the anime, so I guess there's a manga to go along with it. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY)

Thinking back now, I probably looked psychotic while watching this. Why? Well because one minute I was laughing so much it hurt, and the next I was crying and cursing the world for making me have such emotions.
I first watched this around 2 a.m. and was completely exhausted. So what do I do? Go on crunchyroll of course and browse some anime. I remember seeing good reviews about Angel Beats online, so I decided to go ahead and watch the first episode. Warning: The first episode is as random as one can get. I honestly had no clue what I was watching. I remember having a strange dream that night (morning??), but that's about it.
Characters: 9/10
Though it took me an episode or too to get my bearings straight, after episode 3, I fell in love with the characters.
Their personalities are so easy to connect to and are flat out hilarious (idk, maybe it's because I'm still a teenager). But later in the show, the creators (you amazing, blessed creators) show you the characters' past and trust me, most of them are heart-wrenching. The characters, though some are a bit outrageous, have such...human backgrounds and problems that everyone has faced some point in life that you sort of find yourself nodding along when they talk about their death and life when they were still alive. And the character development is fantastic for an anime that is only 13 episodes.
Animation: 8/10
What struck me first when I watched the show was the color. The hair, outfits, highlights, everything was so eye-popping that it was a bit overwhelming at first. But the animation is beautiful and that extra color just makes everything feel more real.
Romance: 10/10
Yes, there is romance. But it doesn't overpower the show like so many other animes do. The love between characters pulls at the heart strings and makes you (or at least, it made me) tear up because of how genuine it felt. You have to remember. This show is about a bunch of dead kids/teenagers that are forced into something they never wanted. Loyalties are tested and friendships are pushed, but you can easily see that everyone cares deeply about one another and are reluctant to see each other leave.
The Ending: 10000000000000000/10
The ending........the ending........I'm sure people have heard how the ending to Angel Beats is sad, well, they're wrong. Sad does not even compare to the onslaught of feels that I had. I have never cried so hard in my life. People who know me have always considered me cold hearted (and I am), but this ending..... I cried for 2 hours straight. And not the gentle, slow tears, but I mean snot, hiccupping, couldn't breathe kind of crying that got me stares the next day at school when I came in with a gigantic headache and slightly swollen and puffy eyes. The ending is actually quite predictable, but because I got so attached to the characters, I was set in a permanent denial mode after episode 2. And if you hate cliffhangers, this show has the definition of a cliffhanger. The last few minutes, you're going to be crying you eyes out to so emotional that you don't know whether to celebrate or throw your computer/TV/tablet/phone out of a window. Into a fire. And run over it repeatedly with a tank. Then maybe drop a nuke or two on it.
Action/Comedy: 9.5/10
When I wasn't crying while watching Angel Beats, then I was rather laughing or biting my nails in anticipation (sometimes--heck, usually both). There is some blood in the show for those who are a bit squeamish when they see it, but I think it only adds to the comedic value (XD sounds pretty sadistic, I know, but you'd have to watch it to understand). One of the (many) other things I love about Angel Beats is that it actually has a plot. A select group of students there are training to kill a silver-haired, petite girl named Angel,
this mysterious girl who (to them) is practically the messenger of god. She cannot be killed (from what they know), but they can weaken her. The reason why I grouped action and comedy together is because during the missions is when I laughed the hardest.
Music: 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000/10
Probably the best part of the show is the music. Even now I have almost all of the songs from the show in my playlist on my phone. The music is gorgeous and fits in perfectly with the show. Like the feels, the music ranges from upbeat to slow & emotional. The singers (one of which being LiSA) are fantastic. If I didn't know of them before, I certainly do now. The music in the show ties in strongly with the action also. I know I'm not the biggest fan of Japanese music (I am really picky about what I listen too, and sorry if that sounded racist), but I love every song that is on the show. When the characters play their instruments
(fyi, not all characters play instruments), it is so realistic (and since I play piano & guitar) and the creators did a great job of accurately showing the characters playing the instrument. You can see them play every single chord on the guitar and hit every key on the piano. So far, nothing has compared to the accuracy of the Angel Beats characters' playing out of all the animes I have seen so far.
Overall: 15/10
This show is still in my top 5 animes of all time. I love everything about it, and I have yet to find a show that hit me that close on an emotional level. Was it perfect? No, but that is what made it so realistic. I guarantee that you will find yourself laughing and/or crying during the show. I would (and still) recommend this to all of my friends who like anime and any who are willing to watch it. It is a great show for people who are just starting out (because it has everything one needs and isn't long at all). In the end, great show, I really hope that everyone who watches it can love and appreciate it as much as it deserves.
And to the creators who made this wonderful piece of art? You are all fantastic and I now consider you mini saints roaming this earth ;D <3 <3 <3

I rewatched Angel Beats! for the third or fourth time since 2010. Back then, I had a partner who was more into anime than I was, and they put me onto it along with a few other shows. Most of the anime I’d watched as a kid was what came to the States via Toonami: big hits like Dragon Ball, Gundam, Sailor Moon, and Cowboy Bebop (does Pokémon count?). In the mid-2000s, manga was still pretty niche in the U.S., and while it was starting to grow, I’m not sure there was a huge English-speaking audience for it yet. Only the most popular series seemed to get translations. I’ve even heard stories of fans in the 80s and 90s trying to translate Japanese games, shows, and manga themselves, or just consuming them raw without fully understanding every word.
All that is to say: Angel Beats! came out at a really odd time for anime. It was just popular enough for shows like it to make it overseas and get proper dubbing/subbing by professional localization teams, rather than fan translations. For context, Angel Beats! was only the third series P.A. Works had produced (according to Wikipedia, don’t @ me), and its production timeline seems to have been extremely short even for a 13-episode show. For a while after its release, it was incredibly popular and was even considered to have unusually high production values for its time. Compared to today’s big-budget hits, though, it almost feels like a small indie release.
That said, Angel Beats! had its flaws, even if it remains one of my favorite tearjerkers. At the time, the animation was considered very good, but now it feels dated because the bar has been raised so high. The story often feels rushed and cramped. Many fans (myself included) and even producer Yōsuke Toba have lamented that 13 episodes weren’t nearly enough for the story being told. You catch glimpses of characters who seem like they’re supposed to be important, but their backstories are never touched on, let alone fully explored. The result is a plot that feels too condensed, and fans have been begging for a second season for the past 15 years. Given its flaws and the incredibly high-quality anime being released today, I can understand how someone stumbling across it on a “Top Anime of All Time!” list might wonder how it made the cut.
Resigned to the fact that there will probably never be a second season, especially since Jun Maeda stepped back from the industry for health and personal reasons, I decided to finally check out the extra material I’d missed. I eventually landed on the manga Heaven’s Door, and holy shit. I wish I’d picked this up 15 years ago. This is EXACTLY what the show was missing. Yuriko Asami's illustrations are top-tier. It feels like Jun Maeda has the space to tell the story he wanted to. I’m only one volume in, and already I’m hooked. I'm remembering why I even loved manga in the first place. I'm in my 30s now, and somewhere along the way, I felt like I aged out of anime/manga; whenever I browse a bookstore now, I barely recognize anything. The comfort I used to feel in spotting familiar artists and creators is long gone. But this manga might have reignited my interest in the medium after years of waning interest. I can’t wait to read more about the characters who never got their stories told in the show, dive deeper into the origins of the Afterlife Battlefront, and maybe even see the beginnings of Girls Dead Monster (crosses fingers).

A prequel to Angel Beats? Sign me up!
Heaven's Door is basically an origin story for the "SSS Brigade," or the "Afterlife Battlefront," or whatever you want to call it. The name seems to change regularly, but the goal remains the same: kicking God's butt because the characters' had a sucky life and are now trapped in high school purgatory.
If you've seen the anime, you have an idea of what to expect. Extreme and totally meaningless violence, characters who are a over the top, and while it hasn't shown up in this volume just yet, I'm willing to bet that future volumes will contain "all of the feels."
If you haven't seen the anime, though, this might not be the best introduction to the series. You won't be totally lost, but I'm not sure you'd 'get' it either. Watch the anime first, and when you like that one, give the manga a shot. :)

I brought the DVDs a LONG time ago and I loved the series so much! I really loved it. And I remember being so sad that it finished, like I was not ready to let go of the show after so short amount of time. Then, coincidence answered my thoughts as I went to Waterstones one day and stumbled upon this prequel book! I am not exaggerating when I tell you that it made me very, very happy!
As for the story itself, it's as great as the TV show. It's fun, imaginative, and all my favourite characters are back for more adventures. It's nice seeing a side of them to before the show and getting a bit more backstory on just how things came to be. Some of the writing can be a bit cliche and over the top but, for this kind of story, that's to be expected and can often just add to the silly fun of it all.
As for the story itself, it's as great as the TV show. It's fun, imaginative, and all my favourite characters are back for more adventures. It's nice seeing a side of them to before the show and getting a bit more backstory on just how things came to be. I enjoyed this book! I've never watched the anime but I didn't really get confused so I don't feel it matters. I am a little religious and the whole trying to take down God thing was a little bothering for me. I'm just a little unsure what to think... if I put aside that than this was an enjoyable read (it WAS an enjoyable read it just made me a little uncomfortable at times). I feel this was a great start to a cute series!

I'm comparison to the anime I didnt find this as intriguing to read even tho it is a prequel. I just didnt feel the charm was there so I dont think I will continue the manga series.

For my summer reading, I read Angel Beats by Jun Maeda. This is about a person named Otonashi who apparently wakes up to know he’s dead. Once he found out that the place he woke up, the people around there tell him it’s second change to life, of course where they “live” now is a school. the reason they are there, Are supposedly to fight for your existence, the reason is if you disappear, no one knows what happens to you, And so since he doesn’t know what’s going on, he is convinced by a leader of a group of people, that the girl named Tenshi is evil. in the start Otonashi is set out to fight a girl named “Tenshi” (angel). Although he doesn’t remember about his past life , only who he is. he follows through his adventure to know that things aren’t the way it looks like, and unravels a mysterious truth behind what he’s been through.
I love reading the manga/book Angel Beats, because it shows a lot of expressions in reading that, makes you think like the main character, and lets say, think like him, or makes you ask yourself, “what would I do in his position? “, that sort of stuff makes it more fun, and the decision are based on what a real person would judge on. I mean a lot of people judge on what people look like, and think they are bad influence, or a mean person, it shows that in this manga/book, the reason they fight Tenshi, is because of that. That said , i’d love to recommend this book to anyone who loves a short story, sci-fi , and action ( who doesn’t judge or criticise work that is different ).

I'm enjoying this series so far. I really liked the anime and this manga series is a prequel to it, showing how everyone got to where the were when the anime started.
It was a bit difficult at times to figure out who was actually speaking. However, this doesn't really matter that much as it usually became a bit more obvious after a few panels, so the flow of the story wasn't interrupted too much.
The anime has so many characters that many of them get barely any screen time. In this first volume only a handful are introduced, giving the reader a chance to properly get to know who they are and what their personalities are like. Hopefully this trend will continue through the rest of the manga.
This volume focuses primarily on how Yuri and Hinata meet, become friends, and their first experiences with 'Angel'. Although there is a fair amount of violence, the characters are immortal (as one has to keep reminding the other) so there are no deaths at all. The premise of this series, being set in the afterlife, means that the risk of death can't be used as it can in other series, however this just means that other things have to be at stake for there to be any tension. Personally, I think that Jun Maeda does an excellent job.
Also, it's nice not to have to read about your favourite characters dying for once.

This is and always will be my vavorite series of books! Just the fact that there was a story about the after life captured my attention. i would really want to see whatelse this auther has to offer (of course if its in english). one of my favorite parts of this series would have to be when the first vocalist of Girls Dead Monster got abliterated, because she sung a song that is in the anime called "my song". if that song doesn't make you cry, you have no emotion. i can really conect to this series ( i get butterflies just mentioning it ) by the characters. the character i connect to the most would be Naoi. Naoi had a life were he was always by himself, until his twin brother died. After that he was always trying his best to please his father. He indicated that he, himself had "died" when his brother died. if your looking for a book that will make you laugh and cry then this is it. this series also had an anime with it.

This is the anime series that got me back into anime. It was on Netflix, I hadn't watched anime in a while, and thus, I binged all twelve (or thirteen, I can't really remember) episodes and then bawled my eyes out. The anime got cut, it was originally supposed to be 26 episodes or so - and therefore, there were a lot of loose ends hanging. So a manga, telling the stories of characters before the events of the anime - well, that sounded perfect.
I read a lot of this online as chapters were being released, but eventually it got its English release, and it was so great to get back into this world and get back with these characters. This isn't my favorite volume of all; I remember some later chapters that I'm really pumped for, and also we didn't get Noda yet in this one and he is my child, but this was still a good one and a start of a series that I'm pumped to continue to buy.
I read a lot of this online as chapters were being released, but eventually it got its English release, and it was so great to get back into this world and get back with these characters. So this was the first mange I've ever read and I have to say I quite liked it. At first I forgot you were supposed to read from right to left but after the it was okay.
What I liked:
1) the art. This I'd like a comic strip, all pictures so the quality of the drawings is important.

What I didn't like:
1) I didn't know what was being said aloud or thought and I didn't know who was saying what,though I guessed after a while.
2) it took my a while to understand what was happening, but I think point one is to fault.
So overall, interesting, enjoyable and new.

1) the art. This I'd like a comic strip, all pictures so the quality of the drawings is important.

Read this because I loved the anime when it came out. The art and plot are a little simple so far, but that's probably because I already know the world's background. The notes in the back mentioned that the artist was just a big fan of the series that somehow got chosen to be the manga's artist which is pretty neat from a fan's perspective. It's a prequel to the anime and I'm looking forward to reading about the background of characters from the original series. I still really love Yuri's determined, self-assertive attitude. I want more anime/manga to have female leads like her.

Although it's the prequel to the miniseries, it's best to read this after watching the show. From the humor to the characters to any emotional moments shown, it's like you're still watching the show. Although it was tough at first to read it as I had to learn to read the dialogue from the right to left instead of how one normally reads a manga/comics. It's a good thing to get into after watching Angel Beats.

The first volume of Angel Beats! Heaven's Door focus on a group of teenagers who have crossed over, but didn't understand their purpose in life. A group called the SSS - Shinda Sekai Sensen - battle against the student council for the world after dead - the Angels - with their leader Yuri who resents the god that gave her a, so called, useless life. Throughout the selection, the SSS fight against the Angels for answers; weapons against supernatural powers.

I love Angel Beats I have seen the anime and now that I'm reading the manga I love it even more plus I love Hinata even more (I mean I already loved Hinata but now much more:) )

I expected something a bit different because I didn't know this manga is prequel to the anime. But I like it! It's funny and cute and I like returning to this world. The anime was better though.
