As with volume 1, volume 2 tells the stories behind more hymns. Some entries are about the songs themselves, others about the authors, and still others are about the influence of those hymns on others. Each story is interesting, though some more than others. However, my biggest issue with this volume is the same as with volume 1: The author rarely cites any sources. I've read a few other books like this and oftentimes the stories don't line up with each other. At times, they are even contradictory. Cited sources would assist the reader to come to a conclusion for themselves regarding what's fact and what's fiction. Regardless of this omission, the book was still both enjoyable and insightful.
This was a very good book, found it cheap at a used bookstore. I loved the hymn lyrics and notes on the scale on one side and the story about it, or in relation to it, on the other. There were a few hymns that weren't fully Biblical like ones about asking Jesus into your heart, so I'm not learning those. But otherwise very good, I would like to find book 1:)
I found this book on Amazon.com. It has the words and music for hymns and then a devotional style story about who wrote the hymn and any inspirational stories associated with the hymn. I really enjoyed reading it and learning the trivia behind these hymns. I was also surprised to see many hymns that I thought were just LDS hymns in this book. All in all I really liked it.
Excellent overview of the origins of great hymns. Interesting to see how these, usually poems initially, arose out of personal life experience. Interesting background to many hymns oft-used, especially in evangelical churches.
I really like reading these as a daily devotional. There are some amazing stories behind some of the hymns and it made me appreciate early American Christianity in new ways as the stories were woven through the civil war, racism, immigration from Europe and many other situations.
The second book in the series is a great resource that I've added to my devotional time. I enjoyed the short biographical sections and the Bible verses that went along with them.
