And Earth is on the front lines. More amazing than the interstellar war, is the soldier before her. He is strong and stoic, a veteran, but beneath the armor, Korina finds the heart of a man. And in Korina, Sergeant Morrow finds the soul of a warrior to match his own. Their lives had started light-years apart, but the attraction between them pulls like destiny. Their desire is real, but the enemy needs to be driven from Earth. Can Korina and Sergeant Morrow's passion survive in the Limit War?
Nico Rosso was a writer in search of a genre until his wife, Zoë Archer, brought romance into his life in more ways than one. He’s created sci-fi and post-apocalyptic romance worlds, as well as working with his wife on the steampunk Ether Chronicles series. His paranormal Demon Rock series brought you satyr rock stars and the Muses who fed them. With the romantic suspense Black Ops: Automatik series, he takes you into the deep dark world of secret operations designed to protect the innocent.
Taken to the Limit is the 1st novella in the Limit War series. Being the first means it has the burden to set the whole world-building and since it's a novella it has to do this in only 68 pages! Still, even if this felt like Mission Impossible, Nico Rosso delivered a story that makes me want to read more. Taken to the Limit is a sci-fi romance...why am I not reading more sci-fi romances??? This genre rocks! (Ahem...Don't miss Susi's post about Sci-fi Romance Vs PNR next Wednesday)
Yes, I was very curious to read a romance written by a man. Well let me tell you, I found it more interesting than many books written by women. But shhhhhhh it's a secret *wink*. Korina is a Doctor in a hospital, her life changes forever the day she meets Morrow and a wounded man. The man needs help, but helping him will throw Korina in the middle of a war. It became clear that they are not from Earth when weird aliens (Dusk Warriors) attacks them in the ER. It's too late for Korina to go back, she can't pretend nothing happened and that there aren't monsters on her planet ready to destroy her world.
Morrow is a Nightfighter, those soldiers work alone and are already considered dead by their family and friends. When Morrow decides to help his friend by asking Korina to save him, he doesn't realize it will change her life...and his. I really like Korina and Morrow, they are both fighters in their own way. Korina's battle field is the ER where Morrow's is every planet the Dusk Warriors try to invade. I wish this book would have been longer, so that the relationship between them would have taken its time to develop. It felt a bit rushed but again this is a 'novella' problem, not this book in particular. But on the other hand, I can understand that the fear, the fights, the feeling of doom, can make things happen faster between two people. So yeah, it still worked!
While reading this book, I kept stopping to take notes (well I had to learn how to make notes on the Ereader). I don't often take notes, but some lines were just too good to be forgotten. I really enjoyed reading it. I should mention a very very interesting smex scene with zero gravity!! This was a first for me and I was pleasantly surprised. *g* There is an aspect of Sci-fi that I love...it's the new technology (yes I'm a Stargate fan). I loved Morrow's weapon (which has a name and a female voice *g*) and his armor, which I find fantastic.
Taken to the Limit is a very good start for a series that promises to get even better. If you love science-fiction (well even if you don't) and romance this is the right story for you. It's action-packed and sweet at the same time. If you've never read Science-fiction before and you're a bit scared of it, this is the perfect book to start. I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series.
I love sci-fi. I kept seeing various twits on Twitter and I had to get this book for my Kindle. I saw somewhere that this book was referred to as a sci-fi erotica. I would not classify this as erotica, not nearly enough smut. (Yes, smut is a good thing!) I did enjoy the book. The story was strong for such a short book, that’s really my only complaint about the book. Korina and Morrow have an instant attraction to each other the moment they meet. Morrow is from a dead planet that has been destroyed by the Dusk. He is now on Earth with his fellow Core combatants to protect the Earth from the Dusk. The Dusk takes up residence on a planet to plant their only food source. During a mission to prevent this, a fellow soldier is injured and Morrow takes him to the emergency room. Korina is the ER doctor that attempts to help the injured soldier. Korina is a strong female character. I liked this about her! Morrow takes notice of her take lead actions immediately as well as the soldier in him. When the action starts Morrow never attempts to keep her out of danger with the attitude that she must be protected, she is female and not capable of protecting herself. Morrow helps her suit up for battle, arms her with a gun and a blade and has her fighting the battles by his side.
Thanks to everyone's favorite pimpin' romance blogger, Mandi at Smexybooks, I was introduced to both Zoë Archer and Nico Rosso recently. I inhaled the first book of Archer's series, Warrior, with the utmost joy, and am looking forward to reading more of her work. I was also intrigued about her husband's sci fi romance, Taken To The Limit. Since I have recently discovered this new-to-me subgenre of romance, I am eagerly exploring these books.
Before I read Taken To The Limit, I began to read Rosso's tumblr series called Dead Drop. It's a dark and gritty first person narrative with a real "hardboiled" or "noir" vibe to it. It's superb. The daily entries are short and powerful. Rosso has mastered first person POV....the reader is instantly immersed into Trey's troubled world, filled with crime, double crosses, and paranoia. Rosso's writing here is effortless. I love how quickly we get sucked into Trey's dilemma, and how real his character seems. He is at once filled with bravado, quick wit, and vulnerability. I am super impressed with this short series. Creating such a compelling character and storyline in this type of format is quite a challenge, and Rosso has done a stellar job.
So, my expectations for Taken To The Limit were pretty damned high. I was expecting tight, effortless writing, fascinating characters, and the extra bonus of sci fi world-building detail.
To be honest, I found it hard to believe that the same person wrote both of these works. While the sci fi portion of this book is excellent, the romance part is not.
Let's start with the good stuff. The sci fi part of this book is wonderful. Rosso's futuristic/alien world-building details are way cool....the body armor, alien races, battle on the moon. My favorite was the morphing gun with a woman's voice, transforming from one weapon into another. The action sequences were great. Rosso's strong points in this book are without a doubt the world-building detail and the action.
His two main characters, Korina and Morrow, have a lot of potential. He is a strong warrior of a hero, and she is an equally strong and determined partner. However, we never get the depth of character here that we get in Dead Drop. Which is crazy, since Dead Drop is so much shorter. But for some reason, Rosso is able to capture Trey's personality to a "T" in that short series, whereas the characters in Taken To The Limit often times have a "cartoony" quality.
The weakest part of this book is the romance. Sentences like "Their bond deepened, as if doorways in their deepest selves were thrown open" and "Without words, they told each other what was in their hearts" totally threw me for a loop. Now, if I were reading a Harlequin, I would expect stuff like this. Maybe. But this is the same guy who is writing sharp, clever material in Dead Drop.
The thing about romance is that the sex needs to reflect the type of story you're writing. If you're writing a sweet story, the sex is sweet. If you're writing a dark and disturbing romantic suspense, the sex is darker, edgier. If you're writing sci fi, with lots of intense action, the sex needs to be right on board with that. Intense, powerful stuff. The love scenes in this book don't mesh with the rest of the story. They were full of clichés and to be honest, distracting. This is not the first time I have read a sci fi/erotica where the science fiction and the romance are dueling with each other instead of complementing each other. I can see that blending these two things together seamlessly is definitely a challenge.
So, here's my take on this. The word that popped into my head when reading Dead Drop was "authentic"....there is a real authenticity to this story...it reveals the author's true voice, feels totally genuine and not forced. The same cannot be said for Taken To The Limit. The author's strengths are apparent (sci fi detail, action/adventure), but so are his weaknesses (lovey-dovey romance stuff). I think Nico Rosso needs to stick with gritty, and he'll be all set.
Grade: C+
Here is the link to the first installment of Dead Drop. (http://nicorosso.tumblr.com/post/3049...) This series is wonderful and addictive. I highly recommend it.
I don't even know where to start. The one thing I didn't like was the fact it was so short, but hey it is a Novella so that was expected. It just kinda sucked when you feel you are getting sucked in to the story the end is drawing near. Too near to satisfy all your cravings.
Korina is a Doctor in a hospital, when a wounded man and Morrow come in. It's obvious he needs her help, but by doing that it could throw her right in the middle of war. Dusk Warriors attack them in the ER. *gasp* It's too late to go back and it is far too late to pretend nothing has happened between them. They never said saving the world was going to easy.
Korina and Morrow have an instant attraction to each other the second they meet. I liked that Korina was a strong female character and that was a big plus. Believe me Morrow takes notice of that immediately as well as the soldier that is inside him. Morrow never attempts to keep her out of danger with the Alpha male attitude that she must be protected when things start to get a little messy. Korina is for sure a strong female who is capable of taking care of herself. Also when its time for the battle suiting up and fighting along side with him is where she should be.
Korina and Morrow, are both fighters in their own way. I wish this book would have been longer, so that the relationship between them would have taken its time to develop and not felt so rushed. But on the other hand, I got the chance to understand and got to feel the fear and feelings that were involved. So overall it all worked out in the end.
While reading this novella, I found some lines were way too good to be forgotten so I took notes but then realized I picked parts well that shouldn't be included because I don't want to ruin this for others. But I really did enjoy reading it. I just wish it didn't take me so long to get to it. Taken to the Limit does a really nice job with building the world and fighting a war. I liked reading about Earth as they know it. Another interesting part is how these Aliens plant their seeds. That really turns out to be interesting.
Taken to the Limit is a very good start for a series that has a promise to get even better. If you love science-fiction and well as a dash of romance this book could be the book for you. Tons of action-packed moments ,but then sweet moments come into play at the same time. Since I have never read a Science-fiction / romance before and to tell you the truth I think this was the perfect book to pop my cherry. *grins* I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series. Nico Rosso definitely gives something a little different to the romance genre and I really cant wait to read more from him.
Favorite Quote: He took a step away from her and she stood strong, armed. “Hot,” he growled. “Turn it loose.”
Dr. Korina Atonakis likes to plan. Being an E.R. doctor, she has gone through every scenario possible so she is always ready for what comes through the door. But something is about to enter her E.R. that is going to throw her off balance.
Morrow is a Nightfighter, an alien, who uses a portal to enter the hospital in hopes a doctor can save his friend and fellow soldier who is gravely injured. Throwing up a shield so only Korina can see them, she is stunned at seeing two massive warriors just appear in her office. Her healing instinct takes over before she can start to analyze what just happened. Before she can properly take of the injury, evil Dusk Warriors pour in from a portal, in pursuit of Morrow. An intense battle is fought, and although Morrow and Korina make it out alive, Korina has seen too much to go back to her life.
Now on the run with Morrow, she learns of the infiltration of her planet, and what they must to do to keep it safe. She also finds love with this alien man, something that shocks them both.
For being a 70 page book, Taken to the Limit does a really nice job with building the world and fighting a war. Earth is just our normal Earth, now infiltrated with alien creatures. Earth is considered an “Innocent Planet” and is not advanced enough for the normal person to discover these aliens. These aliens plant their seeds in the dark and it turns out to be a really cool aspect of the book. Morrow is a Nightfighter, trained to fight alone and ready to save this planet. But as he fights with Korina and learns more about her, he suddenly discovers the word “us” and he starts to like it.
While I think the development of the war and action flows quite smoothly, I felt the romance is a bit rushed. The declaration of love seems to come quite abruptly. Korina is faced with this man who literally comes out of nowhere and although his physical attributes are quite similar to humans, he is still an alien. And I think it takes quite a leap of faith to dive into a relationship with well, an alien. Now, Morrow doesn’t give her a lot of choice – unable to go home to her regular life. I like the two of them together, but I would have liked to see their relationship unfold at a slower pace.
Taken to the Limit gives us both a unique alien world, with some great fighting, and also some very hot love scenes. I like Nico Rosso’s voice and this definitely gives us a little something different in the romance genre. I will be looking for more from him.

Korina Antonakis thrives on the fast paced life of an E.R. doctor, but even that isn't fully satisfying. She wants more, but she doesn't know what until Sergeant Morrow, an elite Nightfighter in the Limit War, appears out of nowhere carrying an almost-dead comrade. Even in the midst of the fierce battle which breaks out between the two Nightfighters and the invading Dusk Warriors, Korina can't resist the magnetism of those brilliant blue eyes. While Korina struggles to stay alive and make sense of her shaken world, Sergeant Morrow is shaken in return by the bravery and beauty of this native Earthling. As they escape out into the hostile battleground that most on Earth cannot see, the passion between them becomes more inevitable, if only they can survive to enjoy it. And trust me, when they get the chance, they enjoy it mightily.
Whether you are a stalwart science fiction addict or a rabid romance fanatic, you will not be able to put down your eBook reader. At sixty-eight pages, this is a quick read, but don't even think of starting it when you don't have time to finish it. You'll let the dinner burn, the kids rot in front of the TV, the boss send angry messages, but you'll have to keep reading.
My only quibble with TAKEN TO THE LIMITt is that I wish the author had kept the erotica toned down a little more so I could recommend the book to science fiction readers who might be squeamish about the sexual antics, both on Earth and in space. On the other hand, I think you'll hear few complaints from the legions of fans who like their romance smoking hot. In that regard, I have to put in a word of praise for the cover artist, April Martinez. Yowza!
If you like your women smart and sexy, and your men both protective and heroic, you should buy the book. Yes, right now. That's what eBooks are for, after all. Best of all, it appears there will be more books set in The Limit War universe. I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting them.
I read this novella in a few hours on Christmas day. Taken to the Limit is the first in a new series called The Limit War and to say that author Nico Rosso packed a lot of story into a small space is an understatement. He set up the foundation for a space war, the pairing of soul mates, Dr. Korina Antonakis and Alien soldier Sgt. Morrow, zero gravity sex and the future of the series in just under 70 pages. Taken to the Limit has a few things that typically annoy me, insta-love and time outs for sex when the world may be ending but for some reason it didn’t bother me too much here. Yes, I wish there was more character development and a slower build up to their relationship but I am judging this as a novella and for me it worked. As I’ve said there is a lot of information packed into a small amount of time and Rosso keeps the action going and the tension high. The only thing I wished there was more of was information about the war itself. I was very interested in the aliens and the technology. There was a nice set up and explanation for The Limit War and introductions to what I assume are characters we will be seeing more of in the future but this was more of a romance/erotica focused story. Another thing that I liked is that Rosso kept the space jargon just techie enough that I believed it without it sounding too foreign or so simplistic that it sounded like a current term with a word added to it to make it seem futuristic….like tacking on the word laser or tech and voila! we have new space terminology. I have actually read in another recent sci-fi book the term text disc to describe what they use to study from instead of the word books…..it’s called a CD/DVD – we have them now. Call me crazy but I want my futuristic sci-fi to actually be futuristic.
Two of my favorite things, scifi and romance! Also, the heroine is Greek, which you don't see very often. This was a great little story, good world-building for the length, and it didn't feel rushed. It was a little heavy-handed on the cosmological metaphors, but not enough to be annoying. I was really intrigued by the side character of Vee, but it doesn't look like we'll be getting a story for him. Still want to continue the series, though.
Though the worldbuilding and plot are interesting, I had too many problems with the technical execution of this story to enjoy it. Loose POV, verb tense inconsistencies, and spelling errors weakened what might have been an exciting sci-fi romance. It didn't help that it's an instant love story, either. Those are hard for me to buy even under the most perfect of circumstances.
what a disappointment. could'a been, would'a been, should'a been. interesting premise - a inter stellar war taking place on earth. but humans have no idea its going on. completely ruined by the corniest, lamest writing.
Nico Rosso is Zoe Archer's husband. I have not read science fiction in a while and liked this book, his first very much. Nice world-building. Looking forward to the next book.
