This was a good read: a memoir written by a Ranger's wife of life in Yosemite in the 1930s. I can't help but think that she embellished her stories. They seem a little unbelievable. For that reason I can't give the book 5 stars.
A fun look at an era gone by. When there were real forest rangers and the forest was often REALLY wild. Brought a lot of nostalgia for my youth when I used to go camping to out of the way places with my grandparents.
It's October, 1930 and blushing young bride, Margaret Merrill and her handsome new park ranger husband head off in their car to his little cabin in the woods of the park and dive straight into many amazing adventures and hair-raising dangers amid the magnificent scenery of 3 national parks. From her first attempt at baking a birthday cake at high altitude to peeping-tom bears ogling her through the cabin windows while she tried to take a bath to when the prince and princess of Japan disappeared from a motorcade in the park and a visit from Mrs. Roosevelt, Mrs. Merrill spins wonderful tales of the lives of park rangers and their wives. Better yet - they are all TRUE!
