In writing this book I have tried to trace not only how the main stream of music development, but also, to some limited extent, the underlying causes of that development. The growth of an art does not take place in a vacuum; it is inevitably affected by many external factors, and these cannot be overlooked or underestimated. A book of this length can be no more than a bare outline, and much that is of interest has had to be omitted, to keep to the main line of development.
