This is an absolutely lovely book that can take the child at varying ages through learning and understanding The Lord's Prayer. There are three elements to the text in this book. First and foremost is the King James Version of The Lord's Prayer as it is presented line by line on each two-page spread. The illustrations are bright, beautifully done, and clearly defining the meaning and expression of the prayer lines on that page spread.

Also included in the book is Rick Warren's carefully worded and easy to understand explanation of the prayer line presented on the current page. And then there is a short one sentence prayer to accompany this. Example:

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:" (KJV)
"God helps me to do what is right and good. And he helps me to not do what is wrong. I can ask God for help any time!" (Rick Warren)
(Prayer) "Thank you, God, for protecting me!"

I can see this being used first as a picture book to read and teach The Lord's Prayer to the child. Just read the prayer itself. No explanation. No, nothing else except perhaps what might very naturally be promoted by interest and innate questioning by the child.

Later, begin to read the text by Rick Warren as a "story book" to the child. Perhaps at this point the child will already have learned and will feed back to you The Lord's Prayer.

Then as opportunity arises, incorporate the short prayers into the reading.

Beautiful illustrations! Beautiful and well thought out text to accompany the beautiful prayer that our Lord and Saviour gave us as a pattern.

I highly recommend!

Even tho it's just a book reciting the Lord's prayer, it's well worth the read for even the non-Christian. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. The pages big and bright, could have been paintings and besides my 5-yr-old, my 2-yr-old twins were captivated. Loved it!

Five stars for the gorgeous artwork. Minus 1 because Rick Warren doesn't even understand the correct (and very simple) theology of the Lord's Prayer. 🙄 Still, I bought it for the prayer itself and the artwork. Thankfully, his commentary is only on 3 separate pages and easily skipped.

Rick Warren’s The Lord’s Prayer is an extended version of the beloved prayer taught by Jesus. Through verse and illustrations a child’s understanding of the prayer is expanded and personalized. I liked that each verse of the prayer was accompanied by words that explained and encouraged. Each page of this book is a prayer unto itself, with gratitude for all God does as the focus. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed, although I really didn’t like the author’s choice for Heaven. While it is a representation from the illustrator’s perspective, I felt it went further than the scriptural record. I also didn’t like that the figure that I presume represents God looks a bit like Santa Claus. This book does make a child (and his/her parent) think about who God is and their place in His world.

Audience: children ages 5-8.

When The Lord's Prayer board book first arrived, we flipped through all the pages just reading the Lord's Prayer portion, which is integrated with beautiful illustrations.

We then spent the next several days going through the book again, but this time we just focused on one open page a day.

The prayer is broken down into eleven segments with a little blurb by Rick Warren expanding on that section and including a short prayer for each day. This turns the book into a mini-devotional that is perfect for even the youngest member of your family.

I love how not only does this book help your little one learn such an important prayer, but by breaking it down into such small segments, it's actually teaching your child how to pray at the same time.

The board book's size is a bit larger than most board books, making it unique in more ways than just the subject.

However, this book is also available as a picture book, so you have the option of choosing the format that's best for you.

I highly recommend this book for any family wishing to introduce children to this special prayer. The way it breaks the length up into segments helps wee ones with memorizing the words and the gorgeous illustrations are thought-provoking and will surely prompt plenty of deep discussions.

Rick Warren's thoughtful insights for each portion of the prayer provide just enough elaboration to bring the truth alive in a way that's easy for little ones to understand and the short, bite-sized prayers are the perfect beginnings to what will hopefully be a lifetime of little chats with God.

About the Book:

This iconic prayer is paired with flowing illustrations by award-winning artist Richard Jesse Watson and thoughtful insights by bestselling author Rick Warren, resulting in a book that rejuvenates the familiar prayer for a younger audience. Using poetic scripture from the King James Version, The Lord’s Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness helps familiarize children with real biblical text while also presenting contemporary illustrations and insightful words that make this beautiful prayer come alive.

My Review:

The Lord's Prayer is now put into children's form. What a great idea! With some of the most lifelike illustrations and written for children to understand, the author Rick Warren has brought the light of hope to our little ones in a very profound way. I myself, never knew anything about The Lord's Prayer until I was in high school and this is coming from a girl that grew up in church. But now my children can know all about it from the beginning.

Written in board book style and geared toward ages 4-8 it is a great way to introduce this prayer o them and what it means.

Text:

This book lays out The Lord’s Prayer in bite-sized bits for very young children. On each page, there’s a phrase of the prayer and a tiny explanation by Rick Warren. It’s quite well-done and is written in a very child-friendly way. I’d definitely recommend this as a bedtime book. It would provide a lovely wind-down for small children, and it’s a great bedtime prayer as well.

Illustrations:

Richard Jesse Watson is an award-winning artist, and it’s easy to see why. Each page is filled with a beautiful, peaceful illustration of the text.

Cover:

Very pretty, and it appeals to my sensibilities as a designer. I love the watermark text scrolling across the cover on this one. It’s just so lovely. My only complaint would be that it’s not a very “fun” cover for kids. It’s not the kind of cover that will entice a kid to pull this book off the shelf. There’s another version of this book with a lion on the cover that I think would appeal to kids more.

Four stars for BEAUTIFUL illustrations and excellent commentary on the meaningfulness of the Lords’s Prayer both in childhood and adulthood.

One star deducted just because of personal taste. I would have preferred they use a more modern version of the prayer than the King James Version. That’s a personal preference though. However, I think a more modern version would have been better since this book is written for children. One example is that this book uses the “indebtedness” over the words “trespassing/trespasses.” I just think that could be confusing for a child. “Trespassing” in my opinion is an easier verb for kids to understand than “being indebted.”

With that aside, i still recommend this book because it’s very beautiful, and a simple but meaningful way to bring the Lords Prayer to children in a way they understand better: through picture books.

The book has realistic artwork and the Lord's prayer by itself. Individual pictures are associated with with each line or sentence of the Lord's prayer. After the Lord's prayer is done, it is redone but with commentary for the author, along with his explanation as to the importance of the Lord's prayer. For the religious, it is a good introduction to prayer as a whole, and the Lord's prayer itself. For the irreligious, it is a good way to see how most Christians see prayer and the Lord's prayer.

Finishing out the reading challenge reading this with my dad. Better than binge reading a pastoral case study book for thirty minutes like I was planning to do.

I loved the illustrations but thought they were too watery in the theological explanations for the kids. It must be aimed at tiny tikes but I think they should’ve included more to teach kids about what it means for God’s kingdom to come (hint: it means a lot more than him helping you as an individual through life!)

The text of the Lord’s Prayer accompanied by beautiful illustrations. After the prayer ends, there are two pages that summarize the prayer in easier language, which I wish was included on each page beside the verses instead of the back of the book. It would have been easier to explain since the prayer is in KJV.

The illustrations are so beautiful you can see the lines on people’s hands. The message of the Lords Prayer is wrote in lines that make it easy for a child to understand. Great book for Christian parents to read to their children.

Such a sweet book with lovely illustrations. (I especially love the girl surrounded by birds for "daily bread"). Part two of the book which goes through the prayer line by line is really nice, especially for little ones who might better understand the words and concepts that way.

Beautiful imagery to go with the traditional text.
I really like the explanations of each line of the prayer at the end. Wish they were full page.

Update: There is a second version of this book "The Lord's Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness". This version has the explanation verses included in the main text. Could be good for home use but too wordy for Sunday School.

I love the simplicity of a small child's prayer. There's no hesitation and worry of using the right words. They don't worry about Thees and Thous they just lay out their requests and rightly assume that God hears them and will answer.

When Jesus taught His disciples the Lord's Prayer He used that same simplicity. It is a wonderful example of how we should approach the Father and an easy template to teach our children. Rick Warren and Richard Jesse Watson have taken these timeless words and added beautiful illustrations and thoughts that will encourage you and your children to not only learn this portion of Scripture but to also apply it in all situations.

I like that The Lord's Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness is presented in this new board book format. This is definitely a book that will be read over and over in our house so durability in the hands of little ones counts!

I also appreciate the subtle way that Rick Warren puts the Scripture into repeatable segments and also includes a short thought on what that particular segment means. The King James Version is beautifully lyrical but often the verbiage is confusing to little ones (and sometimes adults). The illustrations are stunningly life-like and had us all mesmerized.

I heartily recommend this book to all families. If you are looking for a new way to help your kids learn the Lord's Prayer this book is a great resource.

The Lord's Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness by Rick Warren is a wonderful book for children. I learned the prayer this title features when I was 4-5 years old and it has stuck with me ever since. I feel this book would be a great choice if you are wanting a child in your life to also learn this prayer. It list more than the verses but also the author adds a comment or two on what each verse means in a way a child can understand.

Not just the verses but the meaning behind the verse is very important when deciding to take anything to heart, especially when it comes to the word of God. I feel this book puts the meaning in the most simplistic form very well.

The life-like illustrations are beautiful. They invoke deep feelings, emotions, and capture this prayer well. Each page spread features a single verse from this prayer. The prayer script covers the illustrations and either to the right or left is the blurb from the author. There's always either Thank You to God for a specific thing, a declaration, or a request that follows on each page spread as well.

At the end of the book there's a note from Rick Warren about the importance of prayer and why we do it.

I like that this book is in board back format. It will last for many years to come and I hope to use this title to help teach all three of my children the Lord's Prayer. I definitely recommend it.

This book has beautiful vibrant color illustrations that brings scripture to life. Each page has a sentence taken from the Lord’s prayer, gives a brief explanation of the passage and then mentions something to be thankful for.

For example the scripture passage, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

A simple explanation. “God has promised to take care of all my needs, so I will trust him and not worry.”

Something to be thankful for, “Thank you, God, for your gifts.”

The picture for this passage shows on the front cover. It’s a young girl feeding small birds outside.

On the last page of the book is The Lord’s Prayer in its entirety. Rick Warren then talks about prayer. I found this book encouraging and the lovely illustrations inspiring. I can’t wait to share this treasure with my grandkids.”

This dynamic duo, author, Rick Warren and illustrator Richard Jesse Watson collaborated on publishing one of the best (in my opinion) books about the Lord’s Prayer for your pre-school age children ever!

They take each line and explain, in easy to understand language, what it means along with a line of thanksgiving. It not only teaches your child the Bible, but also teaches them prayer and praise.

The book its self is a beautifully illustrated hard-cover book and those illustrations don’t stop there…they continue through-out the entire book. Each page will be sure to delight your child as you read them the story of “The Lord’s Prayer”. The pages are board-like pages making it easy for your little one to grasp as they turn the pages and easy to wipe off from those sticky little fingers.

In my opinion, this is one of those “WOW” books.
