This is a strange, funny, wonderful, haunting, book that's nearly impossible to describe. If you want to know what the 60s actually felt like, Dan O'Neill has captured that feeling here better than anyone. Poltitical satire comic strips of the late 1960's.

Odd Bodkins was 'odd' from the beginning...the adventures of Hugh and Fred Bird were a counter culture version of Alice in Wonderland: as if the Mad Hatter left home and showed up in 60's San Francisco. Dan O'Neill was 21 when Odd Bodkins started in 1964. Hugh and Fred Bird traveled through 'lands' that always seemed to resonate with some issue happening here and now...or maybe the other way around? Truly a forgotten treasure that has been buried.

I read this book shifting from foot to foot at the college bookstore at what was then LSUNO. I remember little about it, except the magic cookie bush, and such lines as 'It was the time everything gets done...Tuesday after lunch'.
