You got to love DP and the things she makes her heroines endure.

This is typical DP fare with a heroine that’s dismissed and used like a sponge with the added twist that the H’s sister has done most of the using. The “best friend” invites the h to the house whenever they have a party and the help leaves so the h can make all the food, do the cleanup as the BF takes credit for it.

The H can’t stand to have her around and rants about her being under foot and too low class for these highfalutin’ Texans. Ouch. The little sponge hears, is hurt and leaves which was so inconsiderate as it left the cleanup for the BF (who actually complains about it) and had to make breakfast for the OW.

Back at the office, the h distances from the H and the BF for all about two minutes because the H, who has pushed her away for years, now needs to use her for some computer hacking and espionage. I’ve said it before, DP is like a little girl playing with dolls. No plot is too unrealistic or too implausible. If a Texas billionaire rancher secret DEA agent or a half Apache former black ops CIA operative with a psychic daughter is needed then no problema.

The H worries and kvetches that he is sending the h into danger as he first brings her to an ambush of a drug cartel maven where gunshot and runaway cars abound then sends her off to drop off some spy equipment at the feet, literally at the feet, of the pretty drug dealing mastermind suspect. Worry, worry, worry, but don’t forget to drop the pen with a microphone right at the drug dealer’s feet.

The next part bumped this story from a 2 star to a 3 star because no one but Diana Palmer would be so ridikulus. The eavesdropping will occur at the heroine’s favorite coffee place where she’s been reading her poetry out loud, a beatnik coffee place that hasn’t existed since Jack Kerouac circa 1959.

As described by Diana Palmer, the heroine excitedly dressed for her poetry reading
She dashed into the bedroom, threw on a long black velvet skirt, a black sweater, loafers, and ran a quick brush through her loosed hair before perching her little black beret on top of her head.

An actual quote from a beatnik. “Like, man, if you’re Beat, where else is there to go but Greenwich Village, Earth? Like, it’s Endsville, man, you dig?”

More stuff happens and they finally have sex. This DP hero is practically a Prince Charming compared to some as he keeps his snide scornful comments and rants to the first third of the book. He just uses her for the next 2/3.

A first-time reader to Diana Palmer would be astonished by this story:

The heroine – what a doormat! She’s loved the hero since she was 17 after her parents died.

And this hero! (whose mother was an alcoholic) is so mean to her!

Hero’s sister only uses her to cook for parties and heroine knows it and puts up with it.

What about the part when she overhears hero saying she’s not in his class and how he never wants to see her again? Devastating.

Oh, first time reader, this is DP- lite.

Hero doesn’t even smoke or sleep with his OW. He includes the heroine in his convoluted DEA case.( Don’t worry – he’s not working for a government salary. He’s independently wealthy and owns his own ranch outside of Jacobsville). He doesn’t rape or have sex with the heroine and then belittle her. No, he engineers a “runaway” marriage to Mexico and they have a great honeymoon.

This hero doesn’t even catch the bad guy/gal since DP needs sequel bait.

Oh, first time reader – there are better Diana Palmers to astound you.

Diana Palmer checklist:
Hairy chest Hero keeps his clothes on until honeymoon.
Breast Description She’s lost 50 pounds, she has great legs and creamy shoulders. Like I said, DP-lite.
Cigarettes No
Alcohol Heroine gets drunk on champagne, reminding hero of his alcoholic mother. Hero fortifies himself with two scotches in order to apologize.
Town Descriptions Jacobsville Airport: “There was a restaurant and two concourses, and the halls were lined with beautiful paintings of traditional Texas scenery.”
Gardenia Scent No scents mentioned. Unless it’s bacon frying. Heroine fried a lot of bacon.
LOL detail “The publisher wants to buy my poems!” she exclaimed. “He wants to include them in an anthology of Texas poetry! Isn’t it exciting?”
Cutesy detail All the jokes about the hero’s gun. Barf.
DP hobbyhorse The olive oil in the biscuits and the low-fat milk in the cornbread makes up for the bacon.
DP is trolling us “ . . . change in her best friend, who was now independent, strong-willed, hardworking and nobody’s doormat.”

-------------
Relido em 21 de junho de 2016.==>The Cobbs were always using her, for one reason or another.<==
------------------------
Our heroine is used and abused on her goodwill. She is a doormat who feels obliged to please her supposed friends. The supposed friend Margie uses her blatantly and in my opinion is a selfish and shallow person.
The hero treats her like dirt and is very rude to her.
The hero has a girlfriend but intends to use our heroine again in one of his investigations. In my opinion he is a cheater.
So the two pretend to have a relationship so he has reason to go to the office where she works.
She continues to see the hero through colored lenses and forgives him easily.
He is a typical hero of the author, rude, arrogant and he thinks he is the last drop of water in the desert.

The three survivors of the two families were a forced mixture of different lifestyles.

Jodie was in love with Alexander. He knew it, and tried not to acknowledge it. She was totally wrong for him.

==>GIRLFRIEND<==Of course he had a knockout girlfriend.

he also seemed to resent her presence and he picked at her constantly.

She'd written him a love poem. Alexander, with typical efficiency, had circled the grammatical and spelling errors and bought her a supplemental English book to help her correct the mistakes. Her self-esteem had taken a serious nosedive, and after that, she kept her deepest feelings carefully hidden.

“Manners don't go out of style!” “Pity I never had any to begin with.” He watched her struggle with the luggage, green eyes dancing with pure venom.

“You're still hung up on me, aren't you?” he asked with faint sarcasm.

He enjoyed fast cars and, gossip said, faster women.

“No man in his right mind could call you, sweet.”

==>GIRLFRIEND<==Kirry was Alexander's current girlfriend. The fashion buyer had just returned home recently from a buying trip to Paris.

her heart sank again when she saw Margie's face. No wonder she‟d been insistent. There wouldn't be any food without someone to cook it, and Margie couldn't cook.

“Wish you came more than that Dane woman,” he said under his breath. “Can't stand cattle and dust, don't like cowboys, looks at us like we'd get her dirty just by speaking to her.”

“You're the one who always complains when I invite Jodie, even though she hasn't got any family except us...oh, dear.”

Margie looked murderous. “She's my friend.” “She's not, or you wouldn't have forced her down here to suffer Kirry all weekend,” he added.

“I told Francisco I was the cook. That's me,” she drawled cheerfully. “Cook, bottle-washer, best friend and household slave.”

==>GIRLFRIEND<==When he saw her up to her room, after the party was over, he kissed her with intent. She was perfectly willing, but his body let him down. He couldn't manage any interest at all.

“I wish I could impress on you how tired I am of finding Jodie underfoot every time I walk into my own house,”

“We can't have a party without her, we can't have a holiday without her. My own birthday means an invitation! Why can't you just hire a cook when you need one instead of landing me with your erstwhile best friend?”

“She'll never fit in our circles, no matter how much you try to force her into them. She was telling people tonight that she was the cook, and it's not far wrong.

She's a social disaster with legs. She knows nothing about our sort of lifestyle, she can't carry on a decent conversation and she dresses like a homeless person. It's an embarrassment to have her here!”

“You should have friends in your own class,” he said coldly.

“I don't want Jodie invited down here again,”

==>GIRLFRIEND<==“I'll be horrified for months myself. Kirry is my steady girl,” he added deliberately. “I'm not hitting on some other woman behind her back, and Jodie should have known it. Not that it seemed to matter to her, about me or the married racer.”

“Okay,” she said, giving in. “I won't invite Jodie back again. But how do I tell her, Lex?

Outside in the hall, a white-faced Jodie was stealthily making her way back to the staircase.

“If you're here, it's because you want something. So, what is it?”
“Margie invites me to parties so that I can cook and clean up the kitchen, if Jessie isn't available,”
“Or if she's sick and needs nursing. You come to see me if you need something typed, or a computer program tweaked, or some clue traced back to an ISP online. Neither of you ever come near me unless I'm useful.”

He couldn't let her enjoy one single evening without criticizing something about her. She felt near tears...

Sometimes you just need a hate-read that you hope is going to satisfy your inner angst whore. For me, Diana Palmer is a go-to author for that. I really can't stand her stuff, and yet I know there is going to be AAANGST. Also, I read three books in a one week period that made me supremely pissed off at the heroine and at least I expect that to happen in a Palmer read, if that makes any sense.

The back cover for this is completely misleading. Whoever wrote the blurb apparently only skimmed the book. Just for a comparison, I'm going to paste it below:

Ever since DEA agent Alexander Cobb had given Jodie Clayburn a Texas-size brush-off, they'd been sworn enemies. But eight years later, an undercover operation brought them back together again. This cynical Long, Tall Texan couldn't believe the baby-faced schoolgirl was now an understated beauty who electrified his senses and his heart. Or that she'd help him crack the drug-smuggling case that threatened all of Jacobsville. Tantalized to the core, Alexander would risk everything to possess--and protect--the untouched young woman. This fearless secret agent always got his man--or in this case, woman. But this time, would the man in control get caught in his own web of danger...and desire?

1) There is no "sworn enemies" here. I sort of wished there had been, but Jodie was the usual Palmer spineless wienie (actually, to be fair, she was a bit better than the normal Palmer heroine, but not by much).

2) This book makes it sound like they've had no contact for eight years. Not sure where that came from. I got the impression that Cobb was pretty asshat-y to Jodie eight years ago (her teenage self wrote him a love poem and the guy took Grammar Nazi to new levels when he handed it back with grammar and spelling mistakes circled and then rubbed salt in the wound when he gave her a remedial English book... Wow... Seriously, what a dick) but they've still been in contact.

3) That's not to say there isn't some serious angst opportunity here. After Jodie gets sloshed at a dinner party (doormat Jodie is basically there for the private use of both Cobb and his sister, the latter of whom is ostensibly her best friend, but only invites her to things so Jodie can be the de facto maid) and hits on Cobb, she overhears him telling his sister some really harsh things about Jodie (even for a Palmer hero, he was pretty rude; he hit on everything from her looks, to her personality, to her social graces) so she decides to move on with her life without Alexander and his sister. Only now Alexander has realized he's in luuurv (or some vague approximation) and won't let her retreat, so he ropes her into helping him with an investigation.

Seriously, now compare that with the weird blurb on the back. It's like a Twilight Zone version.

Anyway, this wasn't anything out of the ordinary for Palmer, except I didn't want to throw my Kindle at a wall, so there was that. I will never expect great things from her, but sometimes it's nice to pick up a book and know what you're going to get, even if that thing isn't all that great. I wouldn't buy this book, but I could see me picking it up again for another pseudo-hate-read a few years down the line when I've undoubtedly forgotten I read it.

I don't know what to say about this book.
the hero treats the heroine like dirt, no like s**t, for the first part of the book and for no reasons.
-He and his sister kind of "adopted" her when her parents died and took care of her, but both of them exploits her when they need something, that is really mean.
- His sister invites her to her parties so she can cook, actually a not-paid maid, some Cinderella
-The hero's cruelty has no reasons.
-As a result she has such a low self esteem that she thinks she's ugly, undeserving of love, unable to have a job she likes, etc i think a woman like her should have therapy for years. Poor dear.
-The hero and his sister are abusive. Stop.
-The heroine has a crush on the hero. Who knows why since he's bedding all the women around but her.
-She's invited to a party, where she cooks and serves and, a bit tipsy, she kisses the hero (and he kisses her back, because, suddenly, he sees her as an attractive woman)
-the hero slut-shames her with his sister, asking her not to invite her to any party because he's disgusted by her.
And that's was the end of the bottom for me.
The death of the hero. The death of the romance.
Then the heroine realizes she has been exploited for years and decides to cut all ties with those two sob.
Oh, Halleluyah!
Sadly the hero misses her and decides to win her back, and of course she's so willing...
So, at this point I couldn't even be angry anymore because if a woman is stupid and dumb and can't understand that the only thing to do is kicking him out of the window, she deserves what she's got.
All the s***t they gave her, she deserves.
The second part, with the usual spy story and drug smuggling and heroine risking her life for the a****le is not worth reading.
I don't believe for one second that he's in love with her and that the awful words he told his sister were because he was attracted to the heroine.
He's a sob and a creep.
No hea for me.
The hero's useless cruelty was unforgivable.

I was in the mood for typical Palmer, and this fit the bill pretty well. The hero is much less of a jerk than usual -- that is, he's only outrageously mean to the heroine one time, and that by accident.

The ending trails off with several plot issues unresolved, probably to come up again in later books in the series. The plot was pretty nonsensical anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

One thing that irked me a little -- Jodie starts the book having lost a considerable amount of weight, and Alexander tells her several times that she was fine the way she was before. Which is certainly nice, but why not just have her stay a larger character? Also, I would really have liked Jodie to kick Alexander in the pants at some point for correcting the loveletter she sent him as a teenager. Or at least give him a copy of Up the Down Staircase to teach him a lesson.

Well DEA Alex Cobb is a bit of a fickle idiot.
Jodie starts out as a bit of a doormat but soon grows an honest to god spine!

Jodie has been a tacked on part of their family since her parents died when she was young. But Alex and his sister take her for granted. The sister, Margie likes to make her cook and clean at her parties and Alex does all he can to avoid her because EVERYONE knows she has a crush on him.
So finally she wakes up and knows where she isn't truly wanted and cuts them off from her life.
The last straw was listening to Alex tell his sister at one of her parties, how Jodie is blue collar and would never fit in with them. How he doesn't want her invited to his birthday party etc. This was after Jodie got a bit tipsy and flirted with him.

There's an OW, Kirry who is horrid to just about everyone except Alex.

Then there's a whole drug smuggling plot involving the company that Jodie works for.

About halfway in, after Jodie has been giving them both the cold shoulder for a while, she admits to Margie that she overheard Alex's rant at the party. Alex finds out she heard and has already had regrets at this point. Now he knows the only way to keep her in his company is to have her help him smoke out the smuggler by pretending to be dating him. Now spending time with her, he starts to learn that he really didn't know her well at all.

What I liked about this one is that Jodie walked away early on so the mistreatment didn't go on forever like some of DP's books. AND she is pretty damn frosty to him for a while after that. I loved how she told him off on his first visit to her office!
But she is sure he is just using her and it takes him a while to prove that it is something more. He is deliciously remorseful.

Safety is good.

This is one of Diana Palmer's bok that not only romance but also some actions. :)

Jodie and Alexander's always fighting. They seems like they hate each other but to be honest, Jodie's in love with Alexanders since forever. And apparently Alexander's feeling the same way but he's just to scared to admit it and said bad things to her. She's hurt and flew back to her home only to find Alexander, sitting in front of her, begging her to come back..

Not exactly like that, but let's just say I like it that way. Alexander's bitter words toward Jodie's so typical of Diana Palmer yet I never get bored. But I don't really like Jodie's weak heart, easily accepting his apologies. I mean, if I were her, I'd die of embarassment and just stop seeing him for good. But if he come and chasing me, hell, why not?! :)))

Not really my favorite but I enjoyed it. :)

Homens do Texas 26
O Senhor da Paixão
Diana Palmer
H.G. Autores 17
2005

ADORO!!!!!!!!

RECOMENDADÍSSIMO!!!!

It seemed that h and H were close from childhood: H and his sister often stayed in h's house because their mother was an alcoholist. When h's parents passed away,H and his sister took her home and paid her college tuition. However, form the beginning of this book, all I read was how H's sister used h, such as pleaded her come to their party only because she urgently needed a cook to prepare food for the guests. what best friend used you in that way while she knew you always had a crush on her brother? Not to mention her main purpose to hold the party was to treat her brother's girlfriend, who could help her career. Moreover, H was so cruel to say those horrible things about h behind her back!

I admired how h stayed away from H and his sister after she heard what H said about her. She did have backbones. Just wished H groveled more!

Nice book ! At first I thought it would not be good since it has a few pages and the cover was cringe. NEVER JUDGE THE BOOK FROM ITS COVER !! I was surprised by what I read. I loved how the relationship between Alexander and Jodi ended. If you want a romantic book with a few pages to read this book is what you are looking for.

Not too shabby. But the plot is typical.

The female protagonist is a virgin. *rolling eyes* Naive but of course, she is beautiful.
The male protagonist is a jerk. OK, so in the end he becomes a reformed man. At least that's one of the reasons why I gave 3 stars to this book.

Josie and Alexander

Josie have been in love with Alexander since her teenage years but her feelings haven't been returned. Her best friend and H's sister, user her and Alexander only approach her when he needs her help with her computer skills. After she overheards the H telling his sister he didn't want Josie in their lifes she decides to remove herself from the Cobb family. However Alexander is not happy with her decision. Fantastic read. Couldn't stop reading till the very end. Highly recommended

I've seen a few other reviewers call this 'Diana Palmer light' and I have to agree. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but apart from the typical 'she heard him being mean' moment it was otherwise plain sailing, they get together... it ends? I was expecting the usual 80% mega-insane-blowup- moment but it didn't happen.

Also... a beatnik club? She's a fricking spy now? What?

A weird one to say the least. I can't even remember if I got lectured about beef hormones, or if the H had a hairy chest. I miss those things.

I enjoyed listening to this book. I would have it on while driving to work. Jodi has been in love with Alexander forever, but after getting drunk one night, she is totally embarrassed. Alexander is a DEA agent and comes to Jodi to help with a case. What happens after that, oh boy you have to read or listen to the book.

Hated it. Basic. Can't believe it was suggested to me (FB group). Trying to power through to see if it gets better. Was this written with AI? Seriously the most unfeeling basic prose I have read on GR to date.

Nope. DNF. So juvenile I couldn't take it anymore. Warning label on this author and that FB group. And I paid for this one. ugh.

Cowonya dominant & sicewenya submissive bgt.
Lumayan 😂😂

This book had me on the edge of my seat, basically from the moment I started the book. The suspense, the intrigue, the romance, and the danger made this one of my favorite reads to date. Diana Palmer is a favorite author of mine, and I've yet to be disappointed by one of her books.
