The three survivors of the two families were a forced mixture of different lifestyles.
Jodie was in love with Alexander. He knew it, and tried not to acknowledge it. She was totally wrong for him.
==>GIRLFRIEND<==Of course he had a knockout girlfriend.
he also seemed to resent her presence and he picked at her constantly.
She'd written him a love poem. Alexander, with typical efficiency, had circled the grammatical and spelling errors and bought her a supplemental English book to help her correct the mistakes. Her self-esteem had taken a serious nosedive, and after that, she kept her deepest feelings carefully hidden.
“Manners don't go out of style!” “Pity I never had any to begin with.” He watched her struggle with the luggage, green eyes dancing with pure venom.
“You're still hung up on me, aren't you?” he asked with faint sarcasm.
He enjoyed fast cars and, gossip said, faster women.
“No man in his right mind could call you, sweet.”
==>GIRLFRIEND<==Kirry was Alexander's current girlfriend. The fashion buyer had just returned home recently from a buying trip to Paris.
her heart sank again when she saw Margie's face. No wonder she‟d been insistent. There wouldn't be any food without someone to cook it, and Margie couldn't cook.
“Wish you came more than that Dane woman,” he said under his breath. “Can't stand cattle and dust, don't like cowboys, looks at us like we'd get her dirty just by speaking to her.”
“You're the one who always complains when I invite Jodie, even though she hasn't got any family except us...oh, dear.”
Margie looked murderous. “She's my friend.” “She's not, or you wouldn't have forced her down here to suffer Kirry all weekend,” he added.
“I told Francisco I was the cook. That's me,” she drawled cheerfully. “Cook, bottle-washer, best friend and household slave.”
==>GIRLFRIEND<==When he saw her up to her room, after the party was over, he kissed her with intent. She was perfectly willing, but his body let him down. He couldn't manage any interest at all.
“I wish I could impress on you how tired I am of finding Jodie underfoot every time I walk into my own house,”
“We can't have a party without her, we can't have a holiday without her. My own birthday means an invitation! Why can't you just hire a cook when you need one instead of landing me with your erstwhile best friend?”
“She'll never fit in our circles, no matter how much you try to force her into them. She was telling people tonight that she was the cook, and it's not far wrong.
She's a social disaster with legs. She knows nothing about our sort of lifestyle, she can't carry on a decent conversation and she dresses like a homeless person. It's an embarrassment to have her here!”
“You should have friends in your own class,” he said coldly.
“I don't want Jodie invited down here again,”
==>GIRLFRIEND<==“I'll be horrified for months myself. Kirry is my steady girl,” he added deliberately. “I'm not hitting on some other woman behind her back, and Jodie should have known it. Not that it seemed to matter to her, about me or the married racer.”
“Okay,” she said, giving in. “I won't invite Jodie back again. But how do I tell her, Lex?
Outside in the hall, a white-faced Jodie was stealthily making her way back to the staircase.
“If you're here, it's because you want something. So, what is it?”
“Margie invites me to parties so that I can cook and clean up the kitchen, if Jessie isn't available,”
“Or if she's sick and needs nursing. You come to see me if you need something typed, or a computer program tweaked, or some clue traced back to an ISP online. Neither of you ever come near me unless I'm useful.”
He couldn't let her enjoy one single evening without criticizing something about her. She felt near tears...
