(1)romance author
Susan Eloise Spaeth was born on 11 December 1946 in Cuthbert, Georgia, USA. She was the eldest daughter of Maggie Eloise Cliatt, a nurse and also journalist, and William Olin Spaeth, a college professor. Her mother was part of the women's liberation movement many years before it became fashionable. Her best friends are her mother and her sister, Dannis Spaeth (Cole), who now has two daughters, Amanda Belle Hofstetter and Maggie and lives in Utah. Susan grew up reading Zane Grey and fell in love with cowboys. Susan is a former newspaper reporter, with sixteen years experience on both daily and weekly newspapers. Since 1972, she has been married to James Kyle and have since settled down in Cornelia, Georgia, where she started to write romance novels. Susan and her husband have one son, Blayne Edward, born in 1980.

She began selling romances in 1979 as Diana Palmer. She also used the pseudonyms Diana Blayne and Katy Currie, and her married name: Susan Kyle. Now, she has over 40 million copies of her books in print, which have been translated and published around the world. She is listed in numerous publications, including Contemporary Authors by Gale Research, Inc., Twentieth Century Romance and Historical Writers by St. James Press, The Writers Directory by St. James Press, the International Who's Who of Authors and Writers by Meirose Press, Ltd., and Love's Leading Ladies by Kathryn Falk. Her awards include seven Waldenbooks national sales awards, four B. Dalton national sales awards, two Bookrak national sales awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award for series storytelling from Romantic Times, several Affaire de Coeur awards, and two regional RWA awards.

Inspired by her husband, who quit a blue-collar manufacturing job to return to school and get his diploma in computer programming, Susan herself went back to college as a day student at the age of 45. In 1995, she graduated summa cum laude from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA, with a major in history and a double minor in archaeology and Spanish. She was named to two honor societies (the Torch Club and Alpha Chi), and was named to the National Dean's List. In addition to her writing projects, she is currently working on her master's degree in history at California State University. She hopes to specialize in Native American studies. She is a member of the Native American Rights Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, the National Cattlemen's Association, the Archaeological Institute of Amenca, the Planetary Society, The Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, and numerous conservation and charitable organizations. Her hobbies include gardening, archaeology, anthropology, iguanas, astronomy and music.

In 1998, her husband retired from his own computer business and now pursues skeet shooting medals in local, state, national and international competition. They love riding around and looking at the countryside, watching sci-fi on TV and at the movies, just talking and eating out.

AHHHH GOD, DIANA PALMER

OH God I love her so much

*deep breath*

Okay, okay I think I'm fine now. NO WAIT-

*more deep breaths*

Yeah, I think I'm okay now.

Anyways, as I was saying. GOD-DAMMIT I LOVE DIANA PALMER SO MUCH!!!! (Must. Resist. From. Adding. Another. Gif. Must. Resist.)

So last night I picked up at least five different books, which I all abandoned because GOD-DAMMIT I WANTED A HEROINE WHO ISN'T IMMATURE OR BITCHY OR DECEPTIVE, A HEROINE WHO LOVES THE HERO LIKE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE LOVED. I got so frustrated that I literally started hyperventilating. And that was when I decided -
DIANA PALMER TO THE RESCUE!!!

And boy oh boy, did she give me exactly what I wanted. It was such a wonderful feeling, such an awesome breather from all the other awful heroines and plotlines!

The heroine in this one was such a sweetheart. Some people might call her a doormat, but, in fact, she was the complete opposite of one. Her quietness belied an inner strength, an ability to make it through the hardest of times and still come away unscathed. God, she was wonderful, with her kind heart and her goodness.

The hero was your typical Diana Palmer alpha-hole. And oh GOD, the sweetness of the angst he caused!!! Oh dear God. I LOVE DIANA PALMER. He was a real asshole, but the ending more than made up for it (as usual).

This book was exactly what you expect from a Diana Palmer book, with all of her famed angst and old-fashioned conventionality. The writing wasn't up to snuff, though, probably because it was one of her earleir works. Too much drama. But meh, who cares. *sigh* I love this woman. I wish that, at least once in my life, I could go and meet her .

DIANA PALMER FOR THE WIN!!

Another staple Diana Palmer with a smitten but fighting cowboy and a ‘city girl’ whom he believes to be too delicate to survive ranch life etc. So we go on with the blow-hot blow-cold routine leaving the h and us winded. Throw in the decorative and covetous ow (wish she had a bigger role), match-making brother and mama (his), and uncaring actress mother (hers) and you get the complete picture.
What works is that the H is not quite as big an as*hole as he would have us believe, and she is truly a sweetheart without being overly mary-sued.

I loved Shelby and King. She is in love with King but he doesn't know it. When she announces her engagement to his younger brother, our brooding jealous hero is determined to make Shelby his.

Love Diana Palmer for her innocent sweet heroines and dark brooding heroes and this book didn't disappoint!

Very standard Diana Palmer. He is awful to her throughout and makes out with the other woman in close proximity to her, then allows the other woman to taunt her about the h's mother's cause of death.

Palmer covers the MC's daughter in a later book, and that book emphasizes that the H of this book has spent decades doting on the h and making up for his bad behavior once they were married.

A few decades of atonement is still not good enough.

Typical DP, with the her who is attracted to the heroine but treats her like dirt, because her mother is an actress and a man-eater.
The heroine is a meek and shy creature and can't even defend herself, so each time the hero insults her and abuses her, she simply runs away.
The hero's brother is a dear friend of the heroine, and, who knows for what reasons, invites her to his family's house and asks her to pretend to be his fiancee.
The hero blows hot and cold, first he tries to kiss her, then he rejects her, then when eventually the heroine goes back home and her mother dies from a drug overdose, he goes to her and acts like her white knight, suddenly all dear and caring.
Then some days later, he decides he's had enough and invites his latest mistress to the house and tells the heroine he doesn't need her anymore, abusing her once more.
One hopes that after this treatment every woman with an ounce of self respect would want to avoid this sorry excuse of a man forever. Tough. The hero decides he wants to marry her and of course she accepts happily.
Can I say where I want to send them?
No?
Well, you can imagine.
I know that DP writes often those kind of heroes, rude, impolite, uncivil, and manwhore, but often her heroines strike back, or else they can defend themselves.
This heroine, who was a neglected child and was as sweet as a candy, is not even able to stay away from that nasty sob, and let him abuse her without even try to answer, so she really doesn't deserve my sympathy.
Enough is enough.

Sweet easy reading from DP. It’s one of her the-other-brother plots. Having read a few of them this wasn’t anything surprising but I’d say still gives you fuzzy feels.

Shelby is a model and everyone assumes she lives the high life. She’s friends with a guy whose brother is the H. Danny invites Shelby once to their ranch where she rubs the older meaner alpha brother in the wrong way and in the wrong places. Just like you’d expect from DP, the H says rude, hateful stuff to the h and she runs away.

There’s a second meeting where the h and her friend pretend to play engaged. The H riles up and turns into a raging bull. Predictable but sweet. Wish there was an epilogue with a little family of their own.

Diana Palmer knows how to draw out the intense emotions! Though this was originally published in 1980, this story works very well today. King is a man with a quick temper and Shelby has always gotten under his skin, sparks inevitably fly when they get near each other. Shelby's been in love with King for years, but she doesn't know that his out bursts are meant to push her away, she thinks King honestly despises her and she shrinks away. You'll need some tissues handy, there are a few scenes where your heart with ache!

4 KING Stars
This one didn’t originally appeal to me, but I had to round out my DP “King” list, and what better way to end it with the original (at least I think😊) King. I actually liked it, so I’m glad I picked it up. To Love and Cherish was first published way back in 1980, and follows Kingston Brannt and Shelby Kane. I’m kinda digging the simplicity of her older stuff without all the extra layers of terrorist, drug lords, mercenaries, and the numerous branches of policing agencies.

Shelby (21) is the younger, orphan, virgin model who’s desperately in love with the older, broody, judgmental cowboy (32) King. King believes all models are “city folk” which would never make a suitable ranch wife, so he bullies and treats her shitty to push her away, because he secretly lurvs her bunches. Shelby is a wimp, but something about her pulled at my heart strings, and I felt stuff for her:) King is a real jerk, not as bad as King Culhane from Amelia, but no peach either. He definitely has the hot & cold thing going, but doesn’t get nasty until the end when he invites an OW over and lavishes attention on her including lipstick marks on his face to push her away. So, there’s really only two OW scenes I believe. In the end, King realizes he can’t quit Shelby, and after the worst proposal ever; they ride off into the sunset together.

I’m like six books into a DP binge, and by pure chance they all seem to be linking to each other. I recently read Wyoming Tough which has King & Shelby’s daughter in it, and she states that her father originally treated her mother poorly and has cherished her ever since to make up for it... so that helps. It also has cameos from King, Shelby & Danny (King’s brother) who ends up marrying Mary Kate Culhane (in this book) which I’m assuming is a descendent of the “King” from Amelia.

Bottom Line- I liked it, it has a simple formula of lots of rude cowboy drama, but he’s also really sweet too at times. It's also short-ish, and I like my silly fun reads to not be too long. There’s no sexytime, unless you count a few kisses, and him unbuttoning his shirt so she can run her fingers through his underbrush. LOL I don’t remember 1980, but it must have been a much simpler time...sigh 😊

I like this book!

Shelby's a model and friends with Danny. But Danny's older brother, Kingston, seems to despise Shelby so much. He thinks that Shelby's a spoiled rotten model who loved to spent money like her actress mother, but he didn't knew that she's not like that. When Danny come and propose just for an act, Shelby couldn't say no. That's when Kingston went red..

Very very typical of Diana Palmer and the storyline's very familiar with one of her books but I can't remember which one.

Still, I love this book and I definitely enjoyed reading. One of my favorite! The angst is perfect and the tension between King and Shelby's so thick I had to swallow my tea very carefully.

But one thing I hate most is Shelby's weakness. I mean, if she knew that King hates her and always throw some awful remarks around her, why the hell she hang out with him? I mean, she keep saying yes when he asked her out. What a joke. Ha!

Again, this book's very Diana Palmer. So if you're annoyed by little things like that, don't bother to read it. But if you're already familiar with Diana Palmer's style of plot, then go ahead! You'll going to love this! :)

A sweet read.

Yeah, King is kind of a jerk and has total misconceptions about Shelby based on her famous mother and his past bad experience. He treats her badly and feels bad afterwards so you know he is fighting some heavy attraction but will he ever surrender?

Now Shelby is afraid of his bad temper and the horrible insults that come out his mouth so she tries to avoid him at all costs. She can't help but admire his hunky body and sexy walk but not enough to want to tangle with him.

As they are forced to spend some time together they come to realize their beliefs about each other are false and start to feel the attraction between them. But half-truths get told which lead them to doubt each other.....

I liked the attraction they feel for each but they have no idea why they feel this way and it must be a mistake. So they fight it with everything they have only to feel the desire stronger than before. They just keep getting hopelessly drawn together.

The author does such a wondful job writing about hopeless desire and people with hidden fire and strong morales.

**1.5 stars at best**

I could tell that this was a very old book. This book was originally published in 1979. The guy smoked everywhere, which is unusual nowadays. And man, I didn't understand how this was a romance. The guy was a total dick for the whole book then asked the woman to marry him at the end. I have no idea how she figured she was in love with him, but I guess she was used to being ignored so she didn't know any better. It was on the short side, so I didn't have to suffer long. It just didn't do much for me.

When I started this book I thought "why is doesn't this girl grab a pair and tell this jerk off." Then I realized that it was published in 1979. I guess that was before women really started to stand up for themselves (which is probably why God made me an adult today and not then). So I slacked off her a little and started to like her despite the fact she was a wimp.

The guy was a total jack-butt to the heroine. He kept calling her little girl which really got on my nerves. But he was sexy when he wasn't being a total jerk.

I was able to finish it only because it was so small.

This has to be the worst book I’ve ever read. Wow. Hero is a jerk, heroine is a weak tag bag. I had finished Magnolia just prior to reading this and I am sorely disappointed. This is my 2nd DP book and I’m wondering if Magnolia was a fluke and maybe I shouldn’t waste time on the others. Ughhh. Just don’t if you’re thinking about reading this one. Unless you like cold hearted, cruel jerks for a hero and a whispering, blushing, stunned, self conscience heroine. 🙄

Having read Sweet Enemy, I went into this expecting to be gaslit by another unstable, abusive hero. Was I pleasantly surprised to read only 4-5 instances of emotional backlash from the hero! Though I have a feeling he might be one of the author's nicer heroes.

If you're looking for a plot, you'll find little to none of it here.

I liked the plot and twists and turns this book brought.
The Hero, King, fits D.P's usual suspects of a Hero; an alpha, a pushover and an a**hole. So no surprise here. The heroine, on the other hand, she's beyond annoying! She's such a doormat. Doormat on another level! She accepted the Hero with open arms after he repeatedly treated her badly - even went as much as asked her to leave, excuse me that's putting it mildly; he threw her out of his ranch. And then when her mother passed away, he flew to California to comfort her but instead of holding a little pride, she asked him to hold her! WTF! Then asked her to return to his ranch to recuperate for a few days and girl, don't you have any self respect? She accepted his offer gladly. At the ranch, they kissed a few times - and quite so suddenly, he shooed her away again - while flaunting his mistress in front of her. And when she chanced upon him again, did she as much as hold her dignity and waited until he's apologized? Oh no no no, he never even once apologized. She was such a scaredy cat that she was afraid what she said would anger him. She talked to him and asked him questions - like a regular tete a tete as if nothing bad had occurred.
Why D.P do you create such weak heroines? Let her give him a hard time to do a mean grovel - I would give good ratings. Sigh. I enjoyed the book but mostly with frustrations towards the heroine.

Ok read, I read this story because I was curious about Morie Brannt's parents after reading Wyoming Tough(Wyoming Men #1). I was not used to hero smoke all the time, but this novel was published long before I was born, maybe it's fashion in romance at that time. Anyway, I hoped DP would consider writing a book about Danny Brannt . . . why did he marry his former secretary(mentioned in Wyoming Tough(Wyoming Men #1)) rather than Mary Kate? According to this story, he liked her a lot, what happened exactly?

King Brantt has had feelings for Shelby Kane for a while now but he treats her like crap. He belittles her and tells her she is like her movie star mother but in the next moment he is being nice to her and kissing her. She is only 21 to his 32 and she loves him and keeps coming back for more.

He does show up when she needs him the most but then a few days later he is berating her again. She just can't quit him or stand up for herself because she believes it will do no good. She was always a doormat for a mother who never loved her or even cared about her even a little. We can see why she is they way she is but still.

King is a typical alpha hero by Diana Palmer standards but he is harsher than most. Shelby is a weak heroine but likable.

It was a fast read but not one of my favorites.

Shelby and Kingston

I hated it. I liked Shelby however King was absolutely terrible. I did not want Shelby to end up with him at all, especially after his girlfriend Janice showed up. He made out with Janice (lipstick all over his face) after making out with Shelby several times. He let Janice be vicious to Shelby and say mean things and only diverted her attention rather than defend Shelby.
He constantly said horrible things and he did not at all grovel enough.

He wasn't celibate from the time he started wanting Shelby and probably not even the night before Shelby left the final time. He was mad thinking Shelby wanted his money, because the OW told him that. He made out with the OW and hadn't seen her in awhile because she was out of town. So I think chances are good he slept with her that night.
He did say he hadn't seen OW in weeks at the end though when they reunited. Np.

Diana Palmer writes books about Alpha males to the max and beyond. In this one Kingston Brannt
goes beyond Alpha to A$$hole and you want Shelby Kane to stand up to him when he's making a hateful slap at her and haul off and slap him upside his head. He accuses her of being a slut and just acting innocent and that is one of his milder slap downs. His family is even seems to step easy around him. I know this will sound funny but I still like to read her books because you want to see him brought down

To Love and Cherish is a tender and beautifully written romance that captures both heart and hope. I really enjoyed the emotional depth of the story—the heroine’s strength and the hero’s gradual softening made their journey so touching to read. Diana Palmer weaves in just the right mix of passion, drama, and heartfelt moments, creating a love story that feels both timeless and deeply moving. A warm, captivating read that truly lives up to its title.

Wanted to like this-did not. It was only okay. I was picturing something like the longest ride, but it was not. The characters were all kind of like bad? Like they were not nice. Idk. Maybe it's me? Just felt like i was confused/missing something the entire time. Glad I tried it though. Wondering if other books by her would be better I've seen people say that this is one of her earlier books.

"He lit a cigarette..." Hilarious! Love these old time books! The hero was constantly lighting up, even holding his lit cigarette as he embraced her! Refreshing! The cigarette nazis would have a field day with this one. Sweet, innocent younger heroine and badass cowboy. You kind of know all along that his behavior toward her was because he was fighting the loooove. Short and fun.
