Just before rushing off to catch his plane home after a two-week bus tour of Florida, Will Thompson tells Graham Knight that he loves him.
Stunned, not least because before meeting Will he thought himself straight, Graham watches Will leave. Realising he feels the same way, Graham has to journey across the US to tell Will he loves him, too. But with little money and travelling in a strange country, the way to Will is not an easy one.
Having read all the decent free fiction on the net Drew could find, he set out to try his hand at writing something himself. Fed up reading about characters who were super-wealthy, impossibly handsome, and incredibly well-endowed, Drew determined to make his characters real and believable.
Drew lives a quiet life in the north of England with his cat. Someday he hopes to meet the kind of man he writes about.
This is a short story-- more a travel story than a M/M Romance. Since it is so brief, I wished the author had focused more on the characters of Graham and Will than spending most of the story describing a bus trip and Graham's encounter with a priest. The word love is used but there is no feeling of passion, nor did the characters have the time to 'fall in love' prior to the outset of this story.
The reunion just felt awkward. The writing isn't bad-- just not focused on what the author appears to want to say.
Working my way through a few short free stories I got hold of, this one is thought provoking and tender. A long journey on a Greyhound bus to find his boyfriend gives time for thought, especially with an elderly priest with a forgiving heart. Sweet and gentle, would've been a good plot for a full length story.
After meeting Will on holiday in Florida, English guy, Graham realises he loves Will and he can't fly home without telling him and journeys across America on a Greyhound bus to tell Will he loves him. Its was a touching story i really enjoyed it ☺️
Review: This was a “road to…” story, with Graham’s prearranged plans coming to a sudden stop as he decides to pursue more with Will, his holiday romance. Review for Brief Encounters Reviews: http://briefencountersreviews.com/201...
I liked the sudden start – the reader’s presented with Graham’s shock as he realises his mistake, and the story continues solely in his POV. However, it’s risky because the reader doesn’t know at that stage the context of what Will said, or what Will’s really like. Graham’s determination is very heartfelt, but I had to follow from a standing start. Only one thing had led to another, and by the time the holiday was over I’d realised I was gay, and Will and I had become close. The emotion behind this startling introduction wasn’t really addressed sufficiently for me in the rest of the story, and I feel that detracted from the bold style.
Graham is ostensibly a lively, witty man. Unfortunately it took me a while to take to him, though other readers may respond more quickly. I found his speech an odd blend of UK and US – That was gonna stop and no mistake if I had anything to say about it against I was dead embarrassed, for example – which occasionally jarred. I believe the author’s British and the vocabulary was a refreshing change from American, plus the use of slang was a vivid way of bringing Graham’s thoughts alive to the reader. However, I didn’t feel his voice was consistent enough, darting from aggressive and annoying to more thoughtful and compassionate. The style was obviously meant to illustrate tension and his panic at whether he’d get a second chance with Will, but to me it felt contrived, and made him sound mean-spirited at times.
The scenes with Father Gibson were sensitively handled, and certainly painted Graham in a more sympathetic light for me. The other man was perceptive and kindly, and he had a significant influence over Graham. Neither the priest’s condition nor his tolerant guidance was anything new, but he was a charming character.
There were several examples of, to me, too much detail – about the air travel, about loos! – but these did help to set the scene. One other disturbing thing that I admit is probably a personal issue: Graham changed his travel plans at the last minute but only later thought about his mother who’d be waiting for him at his home airport. Ouch.
There’s no sexual content, and Will only appears at the end. Then there’s a very awkward scene with Will’s ex when Graham arrives. I’d have preferred more time with the main couple, but the story was more about Graham and Father Gibson than Graham and Will.
The striking start and tense atmosphere throughout was interesting but ultimately left me frustrated. There wasn’t enough information to convince me of Will and Graham’s happy ending, so it didn’t feel like a romance, just what I’d call a slice of life. I’ve read other stories by this author and preferred them, I rate this B.
I'd probably give this story 2.5 stars if it were an option, although the 2 star "it was okay" description fits.
The writing wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't impossible. The premise was cute and I liked his "adventures" on the bus and seeing the people he met.
Parts of it dragged...I liked the priest part, but started skimming after awhile because it didn't feel like it was going anywhere.
It annoyed me a little that he never called his mum, even though she was practically the only family he had and she was supposed to pick him up at the airport. I suppose in a era of pay phones, calling home isn't as easy though, especially across the pond.
I never really feel a connection between Will and Graham, but it's hard since they get so little screen time together. I'm not really sure if that's what this story is about anyway. We're supposed to take the "I love you" for granted and just enjoy the journey.
I'm generally not a big fan of the super short story but I really enjoyed this story. It felt complete and I celebrated the conclusion. Graham is a simple guy who just wants to be loved. Until recently, he thought he was straight. Turns out he's gay! His biggest issue at the moment is that the man he loves has just boarded a plane right after telling Graham that he loves him. Grahams journey across the country to reach Will is sweet and endearing. The story doesn't have a lot of details, character development or follow-up but it does tell a full story arc or Graham running toward love.
Quote: He loves me. Me, Graham Knight, was loved by another bloke. loc 9%

Just before he gets on a plane back to Manchester, Will tells Graham that he loves him -- then he leaves before Graham has a chance to reply. Graham, realizing that he also loves Will, makes a spur decision to go for a journey across US, from Florida to Cleveland, to tell Will about his feeling.
This romance is unique because we don't meet Will until the very end. In fact, this story is mainly only about Graham, and what he thinks about Will, AND the people he meets across the journey, including a very sympathetic priest. I think this is a wonderful story ... and hey, I ALWAYS love story with some sort of roadtrip/travel in it.

This was a quick, sweet story about two men who know each other for only 2 weeks while on holiday. As they are parting ways, Will declares his love for Graham and then gets on his flight to Cleveland. Graham, unsure of what to do, skips his flight back to the UK and hops on a Greyhound bus to follow his heart back to Will. It was an interesting story and on the way Graham meets a priest who helps him emotionally. I liked the story although I'm not sure what value add there was to Will's ex at the end of the book.
First, the up front: This is very short story, about 20 pages, and there are no sex scenes. There you go. Now you can prepare your mind to enjoy the story without wondering, "Hey! Where's the sex?!"
I thought this was a sweet story, and would love to see it as more of a full length novel. in fact, the ending is damn near perfect...we just need everything that came before it! =D Get writing, Drew! We want to see all two weeks of that Florida bus tour!
So this was OK, I was definitely drawn in by the cool cover. I would like a prequel though because this felt like the downtime between two more interesting stories. As soon as Graham gave a quick back story about meeting Will on his Florida tour I couldn't help but think, "I wanna read about that! They just skipped over all the good stuff!"
I loved this quick read. ONly 25 pages but you understood the characters, I liked the Priest. Will and Graham could have been the main haracters, easily this could have been a complete book all about Graham and Will falling in love.
A sweet and amusing short story following Graham's trek from Florida to Cleveland by Greyhound bus to find Will and tell him that he returns his love. I really enjoyed Graham's Yorkshire view of the US.
**** fre read from allromanceebooks.com*** Gay Romance *sigh* this book is so cute. the things one will do to get to the one they love. Graham has just discovered he is in love for the very first time with a Man. read this to discover the journey he takes to get to his new boyfriend, will.
I liked this short story! Graham's conversations and interactions with Father Jerry really show what kind of man Graham is; kind, loving and caring. I would love to see another book to follow up where this one leaves off. Well done Drew! All read
I just finished reading this and it was good. I was beginning to have the same doubts the main character was having about Will, but the ending was great!
