Caught On Camera by Meg Maguire
I don't like contemporary romance.
I don't like blonds.
I don't particularly like Harlequins (unless I'm reading a "Sheikh" book as a joke).
So, it was with quite a bit of trepidation that I accepted an ARC from Meg Maguire. It's a Harly. With a blond guy. And it's a contemporary romance.
And then I looked at the cover.
Now, most of the time, a cheesy cover is something that would make an author cringe. Not a good thing. But in this case, the cover made me smile. First of all, there is a hilarious sub-title on the front cover that says "This show is getting x-rated"...hee hee! Then, you notice the camera strategically placed over the dude's crotch. And finally, the hero himself...he looks so damned naughty, with his shirt hanging open and a very wicked look on his face. How I love this cover! I quickly changed my tune about reading this book and couldn't wait to dive in.
Well, what I didn't expect was how addictive a writer Meg Maguire is. I literally could not stop reading this book. I ignored my children as they pleaded with me to serve them food and beverages. I ignored my weenie dog who was whining to go outside to do her business. I refused to do the laundry, pay the bills, or answer the phone. I inhaled this book from cover to cover.
My conclusion: Harlequin is very, very lucky to have Meg Maguire as an author. She took a somewhat hum-drum concept (a wilderness survival guide and his sidekick PA stuck in the woods during a snowstorm) and transformed it into an addictive bit o' romance crack. I usually get pissed off when there's too much deep POV from the characters, but Maguire gives the reader the perfect amount of POV...so we get to know the characters and their motivations. Both the hero (a sexy, scruffy Australian survival host) and the heroine (a Boston gal who has fled her past and relocated to California) are fully-formed, intriguing characters. The sexual tension in this book is fabulous. The love scenes are just the way I like them....intense, very sexy, and emotional. The pacing is absolute perfection, which is why the book was so addictive. As the story escalates, and the romance escalates, the reader gets sucked deeper and deeper into the narrative. Most excellent!

I read romance for escape, not to be reminded of things like financial anxiety, job stress, or sucky relatives. But Caught On Camera included topics like survival guilt and family neglect with just the right touch. Maguire shows us what makes her characters tick, but doesn't overdo it. And best of all, she shows us how the love, affection, trust and partnership between these two characters make them both better people. That's what romance is all about.
I really, really loved this damned book.

I bought this book solely on the name of the author having read and loved other books by her (The Reluctant Nude, Willing Victim). Read it a couple of weeks ago but only now getting around to reviewing.
Like the structure of The Reluctant Nude, this story focuses primarily, almost exclusively just on the H/h. I honestly can't think of another character in this book.
Dominic Tyler, known as Ty is a one man reality show. His tv show is a cross between Survivor/Man vs. Wild with a little bit of MacGyver thrown in. It doesn't hurt that he is extremely handsome either. Kate, his one woman tv camera crew, pit boss, publicity machine....you name it knows this and will often make sure there is at least once scene in each show where he needs to take off his shirt.
The two of them have worked very well together for three years, basically being a two person operation, traveling all over the world to some of the most exotic, weird, dangerous places so that Ty can be placed in a situation to show his viewers how to Survive This! (that is the name of the show). They are best friends and know each other very well. But they each are harboring a hopeless attraction for the other. Neither wants to admit it. Kate moreso because she knows that will mean the end of her job and her job is all she has. But they flirt heavily and suggestively with each other, going to the line but careful not to step over it.
During a trek in the wilds of Canada they become stranded and spend a lot of time together finally confronting their feelings for each other.
This being a Meg Maguire book the sex scenes (and they finally do have some, quite a lot actually) are incredibly hot. I really need to get over my shock that the Blaze line in Harlequin is not like your mother's Mills& Boons anymore. This is the second time I've picked up a Blaze book and clutched my pearls in horror at the language! LOL.
Also, this being a MM book, I can't help but compare it to the most recent MM book I read which was The Reluctant Nude. As I mentioned above the structure of this book is very reminiscent of that one. It is solely a two character story where the characters spend a lot of time talking and connecting and getting to know each other. This book had a brisker pace and was more conventional in tone than TRN, but it still had some very similar markers.
The dialogue was strong, the language was natural. The points when they reminisce or remember past exploits were fun to read about. And the hero in this one (just as in the other) makes a grand gesture to get the girl in the end. I thought as grand gestures went, this one was much better, though. Actually quite cute, I wanted to spend more time on it actually.
Not 5-stars because there were times when I wanted them to communicate better. They seemed to be missing each other's points sometimes or were talking in circles sometimes. Even so, it is still a great book. I absolutely plan to continue my enjoyment of this author.

There is only one reason I decided to read this book...Meg Maguire is the alter ego of Cara McKenna. Last year I discovered Ms. McKenna and her book Willing Victim and really, really really liked it. So when I started following her on Twitter and discovered she had an alter ego - I knew I would be reading Meg Maguire’s debut Harlequin Blaze Caught On Camera. That’s not to say I may not have picked this book up based on the cover/back blurb but since Meg Maguire = Cara McKenna, this book quickly went on the auto-buy list.
I love reality TV and Survivor is one of my favourite shows, so the premise behind Caught on Camera which is based on a reality show Survive This! similar to the Bear Grylls show Man vs. Wild with a hot Aussie host Dom don’t-call-me-Dominic-because-I-hate-it Tyler, with his equally hot Aussie accent and quaint sayings I knew regardless of anything else I was going to like this book (love me some Aussies). In addition this book takes place mainly in the wilds of Saskatchewan and I’m Canadian - what’s not to like about this book so far? Nothing that I could see.
Caught on Camera was a flirty, fun, surprisingly suspenseful, emotional read. Who knew that being stranded and isolated in the Saskatchewan wilderness would be so cathartic for examining and re-evaluating your life, your feelings and finally make you realize what’s really important in life.
Ty and Kate have been working together for three years in some pretty extreme and bizarre situations all over the world. They both think of each other as their best friend and know each other inside and out. Yet being stranded together in some of the most extreme conditions they’ve ever faced yet quickly reveals just how little they really do know about one another. Up until this point they’ve never crossed the line between friends and co-workers (although they‘ve both thought about it...a lot), but things are about to change in a big way.
Ty and Kate’s time spent alone was almost like an intense three day long therapy session. There are no secondary characters, no sub-plots to carry the story. Just Ty and Kate and their unscripted struggle to survive in a real life version of their reality show Survive This! And Maguire sure does make them struggle...after all that which doesn‘t kill you, makes you stronger. Take a little dog sled mishap, throw in a blizzard, a chimney fire, an unexpected meeting with an animal trap, mix in two emotionally scarred and stubborn people and Caught on Camera delivers an emotional wallop right up to the very end. Ty’s grand gesture at the end was so romantic and sweet...seriously - the Aussie redeemed himself beautifully. I loved it!

The Cheeky Nutshell:
Meg Maguire is an exciting new Harlequin Blaze author who'll be on my auto-buy list for her emotionally complicated but totally realistic characters that I loved from page one. Caught on Camera was a tightly structured book that kept the entire focus on the emotional struggles of the hero and heroine. The intense focus on the internal conflicts in this story raised it above the average Blaze, which with how much I love Blazes says quite a lot.
I liked the fun tone of the back cover copy on this book and actually feel like the book is both slightly different than the blurb describes, and also much better. The blurb doesn't give the reader even a hint of the deep emotions these two characters have for each other from before the story even begins.
That was something else about this story that I loved, that the love fully existed on page one and the reader got to spend the entire book wrapped in those emotions.
This was happily a nicely hot and steamy book and I enjoyed the interaction between Kate and Ty. Both their verbal sparring and hot and heavy moments. Ms. Maguire can sure write a kick-ass love scene. :)
One thing that pulled me out of the story slightly was this thing Ty did about almost kissing Kate. Maybe it was something in the description. Maybe it was that it was from Kate's point of view and our understanding of it was muddled up with her not understanding it. It just seemed slightly off. Made me go "What?" You'd have to read the story to fully get it, I'm just not able to fully explain why it threw me off.
Lastly, there were a few points in this book where I thought "Oh no, it's going to be predictable. I know exactly what is going to happen." And guess what? It totally didn't go there. It surprised me and that was great.
I definitely recommend this book to any reader who's ever watched those adventure survival shows and caught yourself thinking about those men. You'll love Ty! I also think Blaze lovers are going to eat up this new author addition to the line and I think we'll see many more books from Ms. Maguire.

Wilderness survival star Dominic Tyler and his behind the scenes assistant Kate Sommersby are used to braving the elements. But everything goes wrong on their final shoot and they are stranded in the Canadian blizzard with nothing but each other to keep warm.
An excellent premise and the romance is satisfying with great chemistry between the leads. Ty is a gorgeous hero with a heart-wrenching backstory. Kate is likable enough although she is on the prickly side and her treatment of Ty rubbed me the wrong way at times.
All in all, a light and easy read without any of the angst that sometimes characterizes category romances.

Enjoyable wilderness romance

I wasn't sure if I would like this story being that it's a bit more outdoorsy than I generally like to be! But I was hooked from almost the first page and found I couldn't put it down. Kate and Ty were likeable characters and fit brilliantly together both as friends and then as lovers. There was a lot of heat within the book despite it being set in snowy Canada and I really liked the pair's interactions.
I know we're supposed to suspend belief in these kind of stories but I did have a little issue with the pair going at it outside in the forest in the middle of a snowstorm! Maybe I'm being overly cautious but I would assume that at the temperatures they would have been facing, things might have fallen off - which is probably not very sexy!
I'll admit to always being a little worried when either the hero or heroine aren't American in these kinds of books because their "accents" more often than not are clichéd and cringe-worthy. In this book Ty was Australian but I'm pleased to say his lingo wasn't overly embarrassing or stereotypical.
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. It's not the best or most romantic story ever but for something to keep you occupied for a couple of hours then you can't go wrong. 4 stars.

I wanted to like this because the premise sounded interesting and I have loved everything I've read by Meg Maguire/Cara McKenna. Kate kinda ruined that for me. I liked Ty, but Kate was awful to him. He's supposed to be her best friend, but the way she talks to him and treats him after their relationship starts to change is awful, and sometimes even cruel.
Also, these two are supposed to have an ultra-close relationship, but neither knows about the huge, defining moments in the other's past that make them who they are. This seems unlikely.
I just wrote a review for the last Meg Maguire book that I read, in which I explained that my favorite thing about her books is that the characters aren't knowingly cruel to each other and are refreshingly honest. This one throws those traits right out the window.
Also, these two are supposed to have an ultra-close relationship, but neither knows about the huge, defining moments in the other's past that make them who they are. This seems unlikely.

How horrible am I I that I really wanted him to fuck her over for real at the end? Book was alright, I enjoyed the pining of both characters but it just seemed to go back and forth over the same thing. I never would’ve banged him after he fired me while we’re stranded in a shack in a snowstorm.

This was a really nice read! I was on vocation for the past three days, and though I didn't get to read THAT much I'm happy I decided to read this one even though I originally didn't plan on reading it this month but since I've been reading like crazy I added this one and a few others to my October reading list. I started reading all of Meg's novels a while ago and actually I only have one left - Trespass - which I will be reading next month.
I really like that every book by Meg brings us something quite different than the usual romance setting-wise. I guess we've read it all when it comes to the romance itself but plot wise and setting wise there's more room to being versatile. In this one Kate Somersby is the Personal Assistant of Dominic Tyler (Ty) who is the main and only character in a survival TV show. Kate is not only his PA she is right about everything - except his lover. The both of them go to exotic places all around the world to film survival tips and tricks and in general how to survive in the wild.
On their last trip for the 3rd season's finale they travel to an icy terrain and need to pull off real survival skills when a blizzard strikes and they are stuck in the wilderness. While being stuck together things start to change between the both of them, especially after Ty freaks out when Kate is hurt. While the both of them realize that their true feelings for each other can't be ignored anymore and they have been more than just "best friends" for a long while now (even if nothing physical ever happened between them). Also Kate has to deal with the fact that Ty doesn't want Kate to keep her job and risking her life beside him. A lot of old truth are being revealed explaining both Ty's state of mind as well as Kate's. While we didn't get a real in depth when it comes to their past what we did get was interesting and made a lot of sense for the both of them.
I liked both Ty and Kate, both felt very genuine to me especially since we hear both of their POVs in this book. There was something really interesting and special in the setting as well as their past which led them somehow to keep each other at arm's length. Yet there was still something missing for this one to be an absolute 5 star review. More in depth characters / past? more intimacy between them conversation-vise? I mean there were a lot of things that they left unsaid even if we, the readers, did know of. I'm not really sure.

While being stuck together things start to change between the both of them, especially after Ty freaks out when Kate is hurt. While the both of them realize that their true feelings for each other can't be ignored anymore and they have been more than just "best friends" for a long while now (even if nothing physical ever happened between them). Also Kate has to deal with the fact that Ty doesn't want Kate to keep her job and risking her life beside him. A lot of old truth are being revealed explaining both Ty's state of mind as well as Kate's. While we didn't get a real in depth when it comes to their past what we did get was interesting and made a lot of sense for the both of them.
I liked both Ty and Kate, both felt very genuine to me especially since we hear both of their POVs in this book. There was something really interesting and special in the setting as well as their past which led them somehow to keep each other at arm's length. Yet there was still something missing for this one to be an absolute 5 star review. More in depth characters / past? more intimacy between them conversation-vise? I mean there were a lot of things that they left unsaid even if we, the readers, did know of. I'm not really sure.

Caught on Camera went above and beyond my expectations. The story and characters are so much deeper than the blurb lets on. Kate Somersby grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, abandoned by her father and left with an emotionally distant mother. After a childhood of feeling like a burden, she leaves behind her painful life in Massachusetts and moves to Los Angeles to reinvent herself. She takes a job as the personal assistant and camera woman of Dominic Tyler (Ty), a wilderness survival TV personality. Ty is also battling the demons of his past, and the only person who can quiet them is his best friend and employee Kate. Despite the powerful chemistry between them, they are both determined to keep their relationship professional.
After 2 1/2 years of traveling the globe together with Kate filming Ty's every life-threatening endeavor, their crazy momentum comes to a crashing halt when Kate is injured in an accident. She is livid with Ty when he decides to demote her to a desk job once they return to LA. He simply can not risk losing her in another mishap that he would blame himself for. However, as they're stranded alone in a cabin in the woods of snowy Saskatchewan, Kate and Ty give in to nearly 3 years of sexual tension...all captured on film. I had to read this book because I'm a huge fan of Cara McKenna, who happens to be Meg Maguire's other pen name. I am drawn to her emotionally gripping stories, and Caught on Camera is no exception. If the compelling characters and exciting plot twists aren't enough to win you over, then Meg's talent for writing emotionally charged sex scenes will. Meg Maguire is a great asset to the Blaze line, and I so hope she continues writing for them.

July 18, 2018At times when reading this, I felt like the luckiest reader in the WHOLE WORLLLLLLLD, I was enjoying the book so much. The characters were smart and bantery and clearly enjoyed each other's company (and thus I enjoyed theirs) and the power dynamics were interesting (he may be her boss, but she's the self-described control freak who tells him what to do--and thankfully, the power dynamics in bed aren't skeevy, even if the two of them do play with said power dynamics), and I was completely invested in the two of them inching (and/or rushing) toward honesty and intimacy.
I started this book a bit apprehensively, because I was left mostly unimpressed by The Reluctant Nude, but Caught on Camera took what I liked from the previous book (protagonists who spend a looooot of time alone together and who talk a lot and thoughtfully negotiate what they share about themselves) and tightened up the pacing and had a more interesting external plot and had more interesting & better developed characters (the angst was sometimes a little too heavy-handed, but I also thought said angst was very personal to both the characters, and so it was rarely out of place) and wow I'm not describing this well at all, but this was SO much better than TRN. The ending was another forced separation + a grand gesture, but far less "WTF?" than in TRN, and this time, the grand gesture was sweet and IC.
My main problem was that sometimes the plot apparently required characters to act stupidly ("hey, survival expert, let's separate while already lost in the woods!" "okay, let's!"), even if this action was explained to the point it a) wasn't entirely OOC and b) there was good character development mileage as a result. So.

Loved it. Fresh and different and new. Fantastic to see a less-than-perfect hero too -- although seemingly all self-assured on the outside, it became clear very early in the picture that Ty was almost... fragile. He was one of the most interesting and multi-layered heroes I've read in a category romance for a long time.
Kate's need for control was believable and authentic. The banter between the two of them was particularly fantastic -- they really came across as two people who really had lived and worked together, seen the best and worst of each other and come out the other side.
I was especially happy with Ty's voice. There are too many books with blokey Aussie heroes whose dialogue reads like a warped Crocodile Dundee *shudder*. Ty sounded authentic to me -- even his "bloody"s didn't come off as all Alf Stewart-y. (Aussies will know what that means)
The ending felt a little contrived -- I won't give it away -- but it was done so well and again, the dialogue was rippingly good. I was smiling to myself as I read.
It is quite a spicy read. For those who read erotica, nothing will be particularly shocking. But if your preference is on the tamer side, then this could be a couple of chillies too hot.
Personally, I hope there are more Meg Maguire Blazes coming soon.
PS -- I just remembered one thing about this book I didn't like. There's a lot made of Ty's "authenticness" as a bushman -- he doesn't eat things he doesn't catch/gather and he doesn't shower. fun and forgettable. i was very impressed with the author's Willing Victim (written under pen name Cara McKenna) and so happily picked up this work, marketed as a more-straightforward romance. It's a sort of fun setup -- a reality-adventure star and his long-suffering assistant/producer/show runner are stranded well off the beaten path while filming an episode for his survival series.
the characters have good chemistry and fairly believably confront the obstacles before (and between) them. enjoyable, but nothing i'd spastically push on any of my friends.
SUMMATION: a light, short, easy romance devoid of a lot of the worst pitfalls of the genre but not offering anything challenging, either.
UPDATE: now that i've become such a mckenna/maguire spaz, i plan to reread this to see what awesomeness typical of The Boss (mckenna) i can mine from it.

i'd tend to offer a much stronger review of a maguire/mckenna book now that i've read just about everything she's written. this book certainly isn't one of the most memorable of her catalog, but it's strong -- believable and defined characterizations, plots that are neither too fabulous nor too staid, smart and recognizable dialogue, and EXCELLENT pacing.
i've yet to find ANY contemporary romance author as talented and consistently satisfying as mckenna (maguire).

The story focuses on Kate and Ty. Kate is a personal assistant for Ty, star of an Extreme Survival show called Survive This!. But more than being a personal assistant - she is also the camera assistant, travel agent, etc. Basically - she does EVERYTHING for Ty and this show, except be in front of the camera. And she has had a mad crush on him forever.
One day while filming an episode in a snowy location, they have an accident and become stranded. And well, I'm sure you can guess that they both gave in to temptation. Of course. As we come to realize, Ty has had a crush on Kate for years as well. There is endless flirting, but Ty thinks Kate isn't really interested and Kate thinks Ty is just joking around with her. Being stranded forces them to face some realities that neither of them ever have before. Both have some issues from childhood that are still effecting their adult lives, etc.
I'm giving this book a 4.5.....and only because it took me a little while to actually care about the characters. It seemed that the real story began after they got stranded and each of them really began to let down their walls.
Overall, I loved the book. I still think Meg Maguire (or Cara McKenna) is my new favorite author. And PS - I effing LOVED the ending. L-O-V-E-D it. The perfect way for it to end.....and didn't see it coming at all.

Meg Maguire’s debut Blaze is a buddy romance about Ty, who stars in his own reality survival show (think: eating raw birds’ eggs in the wilderness), and Katie, his Gal Friday, who’s in charge of finding the birds’ eggs. I love a good buddy romance, and this one has great chemistry, wonderful dialogue, and sex scenes just this side of raunchy, which is precisely where I like them. I’m particularly loving Maguire’s eye/ear for the great little details of a close m/f friendship between two people who are totally kidding themselves. There’s this scene where Katie gives Ty a back massage in the middle of the night to help him get back to sleep and thinks about the lack of boundaries in “their nearly all-encompassing whatevership,” and how neither of them could ever get away with this shit if the other had a significant other. Who hasn't been there? Though probably not with a guy as hot as Ty.

First, you'll have to excuse the cheesy cover for this book because it's so bad. Cover aside, I liked this book so much!
Meg Maguire is Cara McKenna's pseudonym. (Or is it the other way around? I'm still not sure.) I tend to love her grittier books written as McKenna more than those written as Maguire, so I was surprised to enjoy this one as much as I did. The main characters have awesome chemistry and oh, how I love books with the friends-to-lovers trope. At first, I didn't think I would like Ty--he's a survival/reality show host--but there's a hidden depth to him that we don't immediately see. I liked Kate quite a bit, especially since she's in charge most of the time and is basically a control freak.
There are several spicy scenes which are amazing in their own right, but there is one particular scene toward the end that is downright touching. I love romance authors who can successfully weave sexy and sweet, and Maguire did a fantastic job with this one.

Meg Maguire is a good author, and I really liked the characters and setting. Both Ty and Kate had very interesting background stories and personalities. Unfortunately I didn't really like how the relationship developed. For two people who have been in love with each others for years, and have been each others 'everything except lovers' they manage to really not get each other and fuck it up. I liked Ty, but how he ruined everything just to get the girl with a big bang at the end, stupid, stupid, stupid.
It's like fighting just for the make-up sex and not bother to think how much the fighting actually hurts the other person.
There was a lot to like in this, and I did do the happy sigh when I finished, but there was too much stuff I didn't really like to make me love it.

For the past two and a half years Kate has worked hard as personal assistant to daredevil and TV personality Dom Tyler. Ty loves to push his luck, wilderness trecks, rock climbing, the more danger the better. He films it all for his reality TV show with the help of Kate but when their latest adventure leaves them stranded in the snow they are going to have to rely on luck to help them through. Finally with a chance to each share more of themselves and explain how they feel, their night brings big revelations. But when Kate gets injured Ty has to face either losing her friendship, or her heart. A sexy, cold adventure with a strong woman who knows exactly what she wants and that’s a sexy Australian who loves the outdoors. Great read!

Meg Maguire is turning out to be one of my favorite authors. In a genre of dominant alpha males hers manage to be vulnerable whilst also retaining their masculinity. Her heroines whilst having their own vulnerabilities can also cope with them and lead fulfilling lives.
There were many similar plot points to her other book - The Reluctant Nude but that didn't detract from the story, which was fascinating in and of itself.
Whilst definitely romantic/erotic fantasy there is at least some semblance to reality in that the man might be nominally in charge but it is the woman who is holding things together.
It was exciting andeasy to read without being meldramitic or silly.

This book is SO HOT. Meg Maguire is a fantastic erotic writer. She reminds me of Sylvia Day but with less angry sex. Her characters have good hearts and care deeply for each other, they just haven't allowed themselves to cross the line to lovers. When they do, trapped, alone and away in the wilderness, it's just enough angst- demanding, commanding, passionate and so good. Then it's desperate and role reversing- impatient and selfish. Then impulsive and base. Then finally honest, emotionally raw, dreamily affectionate and deeply vulnerable. (I am suffering from some serious post read Ty swooning.) A definite re-read.

I re-read this as part of my goal to review my old books. I liked the relationship between Kate and Ty, the banter and friendship. But she's the issue throughout this. Her body was flung through the air and rammed into a tree, stranding them in the wilderness. I can understand him being scared and feeling responsible when a loved one is hurt. But she just had no level of understanding where he was coming from. I think I would have liked more time with them as a couple as opposed to having sex then Kate saying it was a mistake.

i've been in a blaze reading frenzy of late, and if you read more then a couple of blazes in a row, the formulaic aspect tends to colour the enjoyment. but this book has some interesting aspects that separates it - loved that we got some inner dialogue from the alpha hero. enough to see that this gorgeous hunk of man has some insecurities (related to past tragedy, of course). the heroine is just as flawed, but her drive and intelligence gives her some oomph.

I didn't expect to actually enjoy this book, but I did. My low expectations made "Caught on Camera" all the more enjoyable. Yes, sometimes Kate's 180s gave me whiplash, but the chemistry she has with Ty doesn't feel forced.

My first Harlequin! It was fun and pretty steamy, but I couldn't get past the fact that Katie and Ty had sex in the woods while actively fighting hypothermia, which is a monumentally bad idea. Still, I thought the layered backstory was a cut above what I was expecting. 3/5
