Offers a training system for running a 5K or 10K race, provides a checklist to prepare for race day, and discusses staying motivated, nutrition, and aches and pains.
This is a pretty good book for beginners. I didn't really get much out of it that I didn't already know or couldn't find on his website but I can see how it would be helpful.
The most valuable takeaway from this book for me- whether you're training for a 5k or a 10k, do lots of 400's (once a week), with a 200 walk break between intervals, at a pace that is 8 sec per mile faster than your goal race pace. Also- it's reasonable to expect a 3-5% performance gain over a 3 mo training cycle.
The book felt like it was geared toward beginners, as far as the basic instructions (eg, how to find a race, what to wear, how to watch out for cars, etc) as well as the suggestion/encouragement to take walk breaks.
I wish this book had explained a bit more about the physiology behind the workouts. I also wish it had made it clear that they are in some kind of partnership with Accelerade. I feel like it's disingenious to be making such a big deal of what a great product it is without disclosing whatever their deal is... Or if there is no deal and they genuinely want to endorse the product because they love it so much... Then say that. I felt like I was being shown an infomercial at times.
As a 40-year-old plus runner, I find his information extremely relevant. I've learned to love running late in life, and I want to keep loving it. He's advice makes me believe I can do that.
This was a very quick read. I was looking for some plan ideas for running 5ks and how to improve my time. This book provided some solid training plans for beginners and intermediate experienced runners. This will not help sub 8:30 runners.
So, a lot more of this book is devoted to time tables for improving your speed and pushing Accelerade than I thought would be, but there's some pretty helpful stuff in there as well, even if you don't care even a little bit about how fast you go/have no interest in Accelerade.
I mainly found the end sections useful, where he talks about how age affects your recovery time and what clothes to wear depending on the temperature, and how it's perfectly okay on your non-long-run days to break your running time up into shorter runs throughout the day--I did not know this! It makes me feel much better about the days when I slack off a bit in the morning but then I walk around the pond a few times at lunch or walk the dogs when I get home. It all adds up! Boom! Also I really like his emphasis on being able to keep enjoying running for your entire life by not injuring yourself.
I feel like this book might be a little more useful for someone who actually really wants to train to run faster or farther and is really interested in the mechanics of that, but I am perfectly content to just run 5Ks forever and never really get any faster at it. I am, however, having fun running with friends who are training for a 10K, and I imagine that by the end of it I will also be able to run a 10K, and who knows? Maybe then I'll be content to just run 10Ks all the time and never get any faster? At least until I'm convinced to join in with some friends who are training for a half marathon...
Ugh. Sorry, friends, I really think I'm out for that one!
I appreciated all the tips and suggestions for running, nutrition, and lifestyle habits. I'm not going for time for my first race, but I'll definitely refer to this book for interval training for my next race. I even bought the Accelerade and Endurox energy drinks suggested for endurance and muscle recovery -- so glad they still exist over a decade after the book was published, a testament to their quality. I felt so prepared and confident for my 10K race after reading this!
This feels like a very good guide for beginners or those starting at a later age. There’s good nuggets for more experienced runners too, though other content seems to be counter to more modern recommendations. Overall worth a read if you can get past all the Accelerade promotion. I also wish the programs were more efficiently displayed - a large portion of the book is taken to by repeating the same training program with different pace targets - surely this could have been consolidated.
I got the information from this book that I wanted. It was helpful and easy to follow. I wish when charts are in books that are converted to Kindle, they would make the charts easier to read. I could not see the numbers on a lot of them. Otherwise the book was useful.
I am learning SO much about a conservative approach to training, one that will last me the rest of my life. I really look forward to putting this into practice when my GPS watch arrives next week. I'm so thankful I met Jeff Galloway a few weeks ago and grabbed this book from his stack.
Though I'm a triathlete, I have a weakness for running. Galloway's provides the most innovative training system for beginning runners. Great for people who need to start a training regiment!
