Frankie and Mary and their cast of monsters were once insecure children and teens who had to conquer whatever each one of them feared. I'd have probably enjoyed the title more if I had some investment in the characters through the other books in the series, but since this was my first encounter with them, it took awhile to figure out who was who and what was going on. The plot focuses on the monster allegiance finding a way to light the extinguished Halloween flame or else the holiday won't be scary at all. They travel to the Castle of Doom for help, and encounter a few frights of their own along the way. I can see the book's usefulness in a classroom since teachers can point out that even monsters have fears, but it just didn't work for me due to too many characters, not enough background, and the silliness of lighting the flame that would make the holiday scary.

A fun series to introduce classic movie monsters to kids of all ages. Also a Hi-Lo graphic novel for even the youngest of horror geeks.
