The Bad Girls' Club

Four girls - Mary, Bea, Meena and Atlanta are thrown together - picked for very different reasons by their teacher - to form a book review club where their discussions and reviews will be heard on air on radio, chaired and presented by the incredibly cool Jazz. As the girls gradually relax with each other and talk more and more animatedly about what they think about the different books, they find they are learning from each other as well as about each other. And so they become friends. Until one day Mary does the unforgivable and, having flirted outrageously with Bea's new boyfriend, makes an all-out play for him. The tender new friendship of the foursome is fractured as the ramifications spill out as a rseult of what Mary has done. Narrated by the different characters in turn, this is fresh, contemporary and compulsive writing that every teenager will identify with, charting as it does the insecurities, the pushing at boundaries, and the tests of friendship that can be real moral choices that characterise growing up the world over.

TRUE COLOURS is Rhian Tracey's fourth book for Bloomsbury, and the first for a younger readership. Rhian has a BA in English Literature from Aberystwyth University and a PGCE in English and Drama Teaching from Cheltenham and Gloucester University. She works as an English and Drama teacher in Brackley. She has written stories since she was five years old.

Olihan tämä vaihtelua kesän dekkariputkeen, mutta yksi tämmöinen teinikirja riittää tähän hätään. Jollain tavalla minua häiritsi se, että tässä korostettiin ylilyövään "opettaja-/kirjastotätityyliin", kuinka hienoa lukeminen onkaan ja kuinka kirjoja lukemalla voi saada uusia kavereita ja oppia ratkomaan elämänpulmiaan. En tiedä, kuinka teinejä innostettaisiin lukemaan enemmän, mutta kuvittelisin, ettei ihan tähän tapaan? Jollain tavalla ajassaan kiinni olevaa nuortenkirjallisuutta kuitenkin, kuulisin mielenkiinnolla kohderyhmän, nuorten, kommentteja kirjasta.

First of all, if you like reading books with chapters then this book is a disappointment. The four main characters are telling the story and you constantly switch between them. If something happens that includes all four of them, you get four almost identical versions of the event.
What annoyed me the most was the language. It wasn’t normal English, it was the kind of language you write in a text message. Maybe if I had been 12 it wouldn’t have bothered me. The story itself was nice. Not very exciting but I still wanted to finish the book. Do I recommend the book? No.

Loved it... Gave you a different way to look at things. If there was a message in it i would say that it was " dont do something you wont regret." Four completely different girls.. four friends..one mistake....

Idea oli tosi kiva, eli neljä toisilleen tuntematonta tyttöä perustavat lukupiirin radio-ohjelmaa varten ja keskustelevat kirjoista suorassa lähetyksessä. :)

Näistä kirjoista tässä kirjassa puhuttiin:

Kaiken lisäksi lopussa oli ohjeita lukupiirin perustamiseen! :)

Mutta voihan draama sentään... Tapahtumia kerrottiin vuorotellen jokaisen neljän tytön näkökulmasta ja vatvontaa totisesti riitti. Kyllähän sitä luki, mutta välillä tuntui että sitä draamaa oli kiskottu mukaan ihan väkisin.

En myöskään tykännyt siitä että joku mystinen kertoja änki itsensä aina välillä näiden tyttöjen puheenvuorojen väliin, ikään kuin varmistaakseen että lukija varmasti tajuaa missä mennään... Aina kun vastaan tuli tuollainen kohta, sitä tavallaan muisti lukevansa kirjaa ja sitten oli pakko ihmetellä sen tekstipätkän turhuutta.

Ja jos nyt ihan rehellisiä ollaan, niin en oikein ole varma siitäkään että toimiko tuo lukupiiri-idea tässä kovin hyvin... :D Olin toivonut että tämä olisi ollut jotenkin lukupiireilemään innostava kirja, mutta vaikka kaikki hahmot vuorotellen kehuivat tykkäävänsä lukupiiristä ihan hurjasti, niin minusta se vaikutti lähinnä tosi työläältä! :D Mutta minä nyt olenkin tällainen laiskimus...

Kiva idea silti! <3

Kirjan kerrontatapa oli kiva: jokainen tyttö sai vuorotellen kertoa oman näkökulmansa asioista päiväkirjamaisten lukujen kautta. Lukujen välissä pääsi aina silloin tällöin ääneen hieman outo ja kankea hyvähaltijatarmainen kertoja-ääni, jonka puheenvuorot eivät mielestäni olleet kerronnan kannalta kovin tarpeellisia.

Muuten ihan uskottavia teiniongelmia ja ihmissuhdekäänteitä, mutta haloo suomentajat – kuka 15-vuotias käyttää sanaa "otaksun"?! :D

Actually, I abandoned this book so maybe two stars is harsh. I should have checked the publication date (2005) because it's so out-dated. Terry Wogan still on Radio 2's Breakfast SHow and George Bush Jnr is President of the USA. Nuff said...

Disappointing. The characters were interesting but the plot was a bit predictable. The ending seemed rather incomplete and I didn't get what was going on with the in-between bits, kind of like book synopsis' but not, they just seemed kind of patronizing.
