The half-breed ogre, Golgren, at last Grand Khan of all his people, faces unpleasant threats. Tthe Knights of Neraka encroach on one border and the minotaur empire crosses another, while the rise of a new and unlikely rival among his own kind augurs the death stroke to all his ambitions...perhaps his very life. Now Golgren must abandon everything to embark on a quest he can trust to no other. The Fire Rose is a mysterious artifact that could prove the salvation - or destruction - of his growing empire. Safrag, the new master of the Ogre Titans, is just as eager to claim the precious artifact and promote his own might.

Great novel! I love Golgren's complicated character and his relationship with Idaria. Sir Steffan and Tyranos are also great characters, and I even started to feel interest in the gargoyle Chasm. The Titans and treacherous ogres at the end really had me going! Can't wait to read the final installment.
This is part of the Dragonlance realm. This is the second book of a trilogy and the first one must be read before this one. In this novel, Golgren's reign as leader of the ogres is being challenged within his troops. Meanwhile, Golgren and others are in search of the fire rose which is a powerful artifact that could change everything.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one. In the first one I was connected to the characters. Not so much in this one. The only character I cared about was Golgren's second in command. Even Golgren which I found fascinating in the first book fell flat in this one. There were parts I did enjoy. I loved the overthrowing of Golgren and his reign. I liked the inclusion of a lesser used god but even that could be argued it wasn't needed. And that is how I felt about the adventure for the fire rose. There was aspects that just wasn't needed.
This second book of this trilogy fell a little flat. I did like the cliffhanger which hopefully will get this trilogy back on track. I do like the inside look at the ogres and their society and hopefully we will get back on that story arc.
This was a good book. I never thought I could enjoy a book that focused on Ogres but this was put together quite well. The characters are all quite interesting in their own way. I would recommend this one to anyone who is a fan of this genre.
Everyone is betraying everyone and nobody finds out who's on their side before it's too late and they're killed. This had a lot more going on than the first one and I can't wait to see how it ends.
Book was ok. Not one that I would suggest nor read again. Moving on to book 3 of this trilogy only to finish, and not because I am captivated by the story line.
