Psychedelic 1970s space opera spy-fi - who does not totally love that? Sci-Spy is definitely underrated. There is a density to Moench's script that is initially hard to get into but with a bit of effort it really flows. It is conceptually twisty in the ideal 1970s mode and, artistically, this is Gulacy at his creative frontier in terms of design and classic cartooning flourishes. Dig it!

Buena premisa, pero no es la mejor entrega de este equipo, que por lo general cumple con creces.

Admittedly, I could only get half way through this book before I gave up. The story was pointless - a cardboard cut out of a main character (note, lack of characterization doesn't necessarily make a cipher - it makes a nothing) with a very unfunny homage to James Bond in space. Which, perhaps, the authors should have made a note considering the 'quality' of Moonraker.

If I summed up the book, it would be 'too cool for his suit' 60s/70s type spy guy in space and a lot of T&A perspective women do pretty much nothing (or something, if you can understand a single thing going on in the 'plot') while looking cool or sexy. Some aliens and spaceships/spacestations with more 1960s type sex kittens doing random things to 'help' the hero.

The book is in full color and the art isn't terrible (hence, 2 stars in the review). But this never achieves any cleverness or clever winks in basing the 1970s James Bond in outer space motif. Each page just hits a clunk and nothing ties in to an interesting story. It should have been fun - but it ended up being a confusing hot mess never equaling the promise of quirky and fun.

I read SCI SPY simply because it's by one of my favorite comics collaborations, writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy. They're the team behind the brilliant SIX FROM SIRIUS and SIX FROM SIRIUS II, two comics from the 80s that are a HUGE part of my storytelling approach now. This comic isn't quite to that level, being more of a breezy action yarn that is basically James Bond in a space opera. Nothing wrong with that, but this story's emphasis on relentless action and a plot that never stops leaves itself a bit out-in-the-cold, as far as the usual deeper meanings that Moench explores in his stories. Likewise, Gulacy's art is breezier than usual as well, without the photographic and cinematic qualities that usually characterize his work. It's not badly drawn or written, by any means, but it does fall a bit short of my expectations for these two creators. I wonder if this series wasn't meant as a "pilot episode" of sorts for a series of extended tales that never came to be. Having explored the "secret agents in space" angle in the SIX FROM SIRIUS stories (of which I deeply regret we have only two), I suspect that Moench and Gulacy wanted to try and explore that angle again.

This is a fun series for an afternoon's diversion. It is not, however, top-rank Moench and Gulacy.

An interesting idea that just goes completely off the rails.
Despite the 'spy' in the title, this is just badly done space opera.

Drawing your lead to look vaguely like Bond or having him make bad one liners does not automatically make him a spy.

Some cool gadgets and sci-fi ideas, but the lead characters are either flat or really cliche'd, the story doesn't hold up if you think about it for five minutes, the sexual tension ( or whatever it's supposed to be) between the leads is really clunky and just leaves you feeling uncomfortable and the art ( from the usually excellent Paul Gulacy) is incredibly uneven.
Panels are either beautiful or 'what the heck is that...?'

It's a jumble that never really clicks.
Shame, as these guys are usually really good together.

You are better off tracking down the 'Six from Sirius' mini-series.

REALLY REALLY fast read. This mysterious spy guy appears out of nowhere, works as an interstellar agent and gets embroiled in a demonic invasion that has to do with his past. Loonie, bizarre and pretty goofy, it reads like an RPG campaign.
