Black Rayne Silent Screams

Rate this book
R&B sensation Sharayna “Rayne” Piers lives a life dedicated to her music. On stage and in the studio, she pours her heart and soul into the lyrics of her songs. But every since her twentieth birthday, her seemingly normal life has taken a turn to the dark side.

Piercing screams and horrid visions of horrendous acts of murder haunt her night and day. Women similar to her in age are vanishing all over the world without a trace, leaving Rayne wondering if the mass of disappearances are connected with her visions.

Soon she will discover that the world she was raised in is just a cover to what really hides in the shadows, and that her life as a human is a deception to mankind, a guise to conceal her true nature. Will she shun the darkness that has befallen her or step up to the throne to become what she was created to be…the Dragon Queen?

This book was nothing but trash, and the heroine is a slut who has sex with whoever and whenever, I guess I'm one of those prudes she is referring to and I thank her for the compliment, I wear the badge proudly. No I don't like watching people have sex whether their. fictional of real, there is just certain things I don't want in my head. I find it rather amusing actually, her attempt to insult or shame us into reading her book.

please we are perfectly aware that people is having sex all over the world, and I hope their getting all they want out of it, getting their freak on the way they want,I respect others right to read and write what they want to, just give me and others like me the same respect. I just don't want to be a part of it mentally or otherwise.

That little info by your book was uncalled for, you could of said it in a different way *shakes head and chuckles*

While reading Silent Screams I kept thinking, why is it that I never heard of this book before? Why isn't this getting more attention? I only discovered it because of a Twitter "tweet" announcing that it had won a "Book of the Year" award somewhere. Flash forward a couple of days and I happened to come across a post by the author on GoodReads and naturally I jumped at the chance to read and review it. I'm so freakin' happy that I did!!

Silent Screams is about the offspring of a battle angel mother and a demon father. Her mother, one of the most powerful battle angels, sends her into hiding on earth when she is just an infant. She's stayed hidden for most of her life unaware of who or what she is. Demons have been hunting for her because of the power of her blood, but her scent is scattered and they don't know exactly where she is. She was also promised to a very evil entity by her father and this evil wants her found. Once she reaches full maturity she'll become the dragon queen, choose her king and the fate of the world will be in her hands. If she makes the wrong choice, namely the evil that thinks she belongs to him, the world is in a whole lotta trouble as she'll go evil. But she's unconsciously chosen someone else. A vampire demon named Demetri that preys only on people who do evil and, by doing so, helps to keep the balance. Needless to say there are factions who want to keep her on the straight path and have her make the right choices for the fate of humanity. There are also factions that are determined to steer her towards darkness as well. There's a war coming and at the center of it is the Dragon Queen.

Author Yvonne Nicolas has written a very dark paranormal book that starts off with a whole lotta action and never lets up. This book didn't have a dull moment and to say I was captivated is a complete understatement. This might not be everyone's cuppa so be forewarned. There are angels, demons, priestesses, and werewolves. There's sex and some of it just ain't pretty. There are heroes who are a bit on the dark side and heroines who are destined to teeter on the fence between good and evil. It is violent and it is graphic. No it isn't sparkly vampires, and I'm so glad that it isn't. In essence this is about a battle between good and evil and it is deliciously gritty. I loved it!

This is exactly what a first novel of a series should be. It sets up the story for future books to come, but it does it in a way that pulls you in and keeps you engaged. Where some firsts in a series may drag as the author spells out what's happening, that wasn't the case with this book. By the time you reach the final chapter you know who the major players are, what's at stake, and you are thoroughly invested. In fact, you'll hate that there isn't more to read. There are also plenty of things to love in this book. For me, having a multi-ethnic cast of characters is like a dream come true and Silent Screams is firmly headed in the right direction. If you've ever read the Vampire Huntress Legend by the late L.A. Banks you get a great example of diversity in books. In a lot of ways this book reminds me of that. Lots of diversity and I hope it only gets better on that front. Of course there is the action. I never felt like the book dragged or that it could have been better if a part was shorter or cut out all together. Lest I forget, there are some truly sexy men in this story: Demetri, his brother Maurisio, Sota (just keep reading and you'll see...), and more! So, if you love reading about deadly and delicious man candy your sweet tooth will be satisfied.

If I have any real complaints it's Rayna. Rayna is the Dragon Queen, but in this book she doesn't know who she is. She's a twenty year old superstar singer who's having visions of gruesome murders. I'll cut her a little slack for being young, but the girl is kind of... hood. This is an internal debate for me and may not be a problem for some. A part of me questions why she has to fall into the stereotype of black folks being hood. Another part of me thinks this gives her more character and that we don't need cookie cutter heroines in all of our books. She isn't over the top and she isn't a character that I as a reader couldn't stomach. It's just some of the things that she said and the way that she said them made me cringe. I'm hoping that this is just immaturity and that as Rayne grows into her powers and fully becomes the Dragon Queen that her mannerisms and personality will balance out, but, I'm thinking maybe it shouldn't go away completely. Like I said – an internal conflict on my part, but it affected how I saw the book so... Another complaint is that I want to see the women in the book step into their own. With the exception of the women in the special ops team (oh they are badass!), the women didn't stand out as much to me as the male characters.

Overall I loved this book. I mean, I really, really adored this book. It's a great start to what I hope will be a successful series. It has plenty of action and a well developed story-line that begins from the moment that you start on page one. I look forward to seeing the characters continual growth, especially that of the female characters. I highly recommend Silent Screams and give it 4.5 awesome stars!

Eh spoiler alert

The writing style was not for me. Coupled with the fact that this seems like a the heron is indeed sleeping with multiple guys. I’m not saying some won’t like it but again not for me. The beginning and the plot were confusing. The book starts of with descriptions of a world that is hard to visualize. There are too many characters introduced and not enough substance and all of the male characters except one wants to sleep with Rayne. Again this would be fine if she wasn’t promiscuous. The author tried to make her seem strong but it came off as being trashy and ghetto. Not the best read. I will not be finishing the series.

This book was just a big no for me. From Rayne being annoying. To the unattractive sex scene. I mean, at one point of the book, the writer wrote dude penis as a snake moving in & out. Um... No.
There is a ton of sex just not a lot with Rayne & Demetri, just them with other people. I get the writer wanted us to know that vamps are very sexual people but still I thought this was a love story about R and D. Not aboutthe random sex partners they have.
But the main thing that bothered me the most is how everyone treated Rayne. What's the point in having guardians that knows what's going on with you but won't tell you jack? I didn't understand it. Home girl was going crazy and her guardians did little to help.

I actually enjoyed this book. I read some of the reviews and was kind of leery about it. There were a lot of other characters storylines, but I know it must be important to the development of the story. I can’t wait to read the next book.

This is my first time reading a book by this author and I'm not disappointed at all.
I would have given this book a higher rating, but there were many POV's and at times it became a bit confusing.
Other than that, the book was worth reading and will continue with the next book in this series.

Very good

Fantasy. Excitement. Romance. Villains, demons, vampires, shifters, angels, warriors. This book is an intriguing beginning to the final battle. I like that it has its own conclusion while the story continues with the next book in series, which I have already purchased.

I hate to call things terrible so I won’t. Lackluster sex scenes, just a crap ton of them. Silly grammar mistakes and incorrect punctuation. I was going to force myself to finish, but b I couldn’t do it. None of the characters are compelling enough to keep me reading.

Oh, the diversity! Up front: I was tired of every heroine in my romance novels (supernatural or otherwise) being pale or having a tan with long, flowing red/blonde/kissed with natural golden highlights hair (or, the more subtle approach: pink nipples). I know there are women on the beauty spectrum between Anglo and tan. So, when I saw this cover, I had to read this book.

POCs (persons of color) in sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural books are barely existent. In the Romance vein of those genres, POC are almost invisible. It's a standard played out in television and film as well. I'm happy to see there's an effort to remedy that. However, my desire to see POC supernatural romance flourish does not impede my ability to judge it. To the Review!

The Dragon Queen Series follows the story of Rayne, a half-demon, half-angel women living her life in Florida as a pop star of Beyonce/Britney in her hayday proportions. She is the Queen of Heaven... or Hell.. or just a really powerful eemon...demon-angle?... I'm not sure, and she doesn't know either. Literally. She thinks she's going insane from all the stress of touring and the visions of girls being murdered; and, oh yeah, the desire to drink blood.

Her two guardians, water demons appointed to protect her by her battle angel mother, don't help the process by not telling her anything. Even when they know she's in danger, or could be a danger to others, they continue to keep her in the dark; hoping her mate will come along to help her through the transition into full demon-angel form. You aren't quite sure if they don't help he acclimate to this knowledge because her mother said not to, or because they just didn't know what the F to do.

Ultimately, the annoyance with her guardians' ineptitude and Rayne's bouts of insanity/blood lust go away when her mate, Demetri the demon vampire who slays other demons and humans headed to Hell, appears and starts to teach her about her powers and who she is. From there, the story improves.

Pain and sex go hand-in-hand in this series. There's also a distinctive lack of self control on the part of the main heroine. I empathize because she literally has another being coming alive inside her, but her guardians not helping her deal with this made me dread the parts of the book that feature Rayne without Demetri.

Fair warning: There is A LOT of sex and "urban dialect". I'm not from Florida. So, maybe this dialect is common there; but, it was a bit difficult to read at times. I don't mind slang, but some words required context clues for me to follow...or I just skipped over them. Also, a penis that inches into you like a snake. No. Not hot.

Review Summary: Loved the diversity. Interesting take on the supernatural and its place in the Heaven/Hell dichotomy. This is definitely a God (big "G" novel), and will probably prove to be Christian as the series progresses. (Update: Having read the other books, I'm pretty sure it's leaning towards Catholicism.) The books read like the first script of a film series; and, while that means it moves slowly, it provides thorough introductions to locations, characters, and motivations.

Hold on to your seats folks cause this ones gonna be a doozy. The first book in the Black Rayne series entitled Silent Scream, made me do exactly that in anticipatory frustration! Don't get me wrong, the book was really good and for 500 plus pages it was a nice read, but it had so much potential to be better. There was an apparent battle going on constantly between "good" and "evil" and with this being the first book in the series I kind of see how that can be a struggle. The frustration for me actually came from said religious struggle because at times it took away from the character(s) while at others it seemed to be a bit too much. I guess my frustrations came because the lead female is a hybrid so I was hoping that the obvious line between good and evil, that the author drew, would blur a bit to gray...didn't happen. Also, there were so many characters I can't begin to name them all, but the two mainies are ShaRayna and Demitri.

ShaRayna, the poor soul, was so extra hood and so extra confused that I wanted to slap her and hug her all at the same time. She has the potential to actually be the first African American heroine I can comfortably compare to other heroines with pride. I just hope her evolutions (cause from what I understand there are multiple changes she has to go through) brings about a better understanding of who and what she really is.

Demitri is perfection. To me, he's the perfect balance of man and demon; I was salivating over every last scene involving him! *swoons* and omg his brother....good goddess, can you say supreme alpha. Yes, it's true, I went there.

Conclusively the tale of the Dragon Queen can be what I feel like the interracial romance/erotica genre has been missing for so long, it can answer the solemn prayers of the multiple readers, prayers asking for difference, change, authenticity, and sheer unadulterated sexiness. Please answer them. Reviewed by M.N. Mori

Dark, gruesome, action packed world of the Black Rayne is filled with demons, killer vampires and heart throbs like Demetri. A world created in horror and chaos author Yvonne Nicolas did a phenomenal job. A book worthy of the title this reviewer can not wait until book two. Reviewed by Diane

Black Rayne is one smokin' hot read! Ladies prepare to be sucked into a story and warmed up in a hurry. Just the thing for a wintery night. Wow! I don't even know where to start. If I could have devoured this book in less time then I already did, I would have. Rayne is a R&B star with a destiny that she is not even aware of herself. Since she has turned twenty years old, odd things have been happening that have been messing with her mind. She thinks she is going crazy, and unfortunately her guardians cannot tell her anything until she is ready. She must figure out what she can on her own, but she does find some help with the mysterious man of her dreams. Demetri is a Xsonri and her destined mate, their souls call to each other and when they finally meet, I think saying sparks fly totally down plays their encounter, it's freaking amazing. Demetri helps Rayne as best he can without traumatizing her with all of it at once, but she must learn quick before war erupts.

I absolutely loved Silent Screams, the story line was intriguing to say the least, and the characters are awesome. I'm a little torn on which one I like best between Demetri and his brother Maurisio, but almost every single male character is sexy as hell and absolutely delicious. This is the first book that I've read with an interracial couple, and it was so damn sexy! It was an amazing read and I found myself at the end way too quickly. The author has done her job well when you reach the end and you say to yourself WHYYYYYYYYYYY oh WHYYYYYYYY is it over?!!!!!!! I need more and I need it now!! I am so looking forward to the next installment in this series!! I cannot wait!!
If you like stories with sexy vampires, shifters, witches with an apocalyptic theme, then you will love Silent Screams!

Dodie's Review

I had a really hard time getting into this book. Reflecting back on it, it had to have more to do with outside influences than any deficiencies in the book. Right from the beginning Rayne is a heroine who is full of life and her personality shines from the page from the beginning. Gigantic kudos go to Yvonne Nicolas for not making the hero the first man that Rayne meets in the book, or even the first man she has sex with. I love it when authors break conventions and turn formulaic writing on its head.

Rayne ends up on a confusing ride with double whammys of self discovery and unconventional new love. Rayne is forced to confront a number of hard truths about herself and her heritage; things that have been hidden from her her whole life. Rayne takes the revelations about her life in stride, instead of being bitter and upset about the amount of subterfuge in her life.

Yvonne Nicolas overlays a fabulous paranormal world over our own; one filled with demons and dragons, vampires and werewolves. Her world is populated with complicated, fascinating people. People that have hot, steamy sex. If you like erotic paranormal romance, read this book.

I can't believe I didn't add this book to my shelf yet!

I worked in the critique group with Yvonne on this story and never got to finish reading it. So, when she let me know that it had found a home and would soon be available, I was ecstatic.

Yvonne wove a spellbinding tale of a woman confused, a coming of age tale, a searching of self and fining out who you really are. Combine that with the urban fantasy/paranormal elements, and I was hooked. Personally, I am one of those people who are sick to death of vampires, but Yvonne pulled enough out of her creative stash to grab me by the balls and sucker me back into falling in love with a vampire character. The fact that the book didn't revolve around vampires in general may have had something to do with it, but Yvonne also had a story to tell about the individuals therein, whom she made as real as you or me, and she did so beautifully.

Black Rayne is one of those stories that is hit or miss. You'll either love it or you wont. Personally, I love it, and would recommend it to all urban fantasy lovers out there!

This was an okay read. I could not get past Raynes dialect. The writing and action was amazing but whenever she opened her mouth I just wanted to slap her a little. It felt like there was no time in this book. All of this took place in 2 or 3 days? A lot of information was thrown out there but it seriously took Rayne forever to figure anything out. I don't know. I enjoyed the writing but the story itself, better yet just Rayne and her protectors (The water fairies or whatever) just ruined so much for me. I am not sure if I will read the next book. I'm afraid it will drag on and throw so many people into the mix you'll have to take notes like this did. I will try another book from this author.

"Black Rayne" captures the seriousness of romance while keeping in tune with the call of adventure. I found the characters well-rounded, with a sense of purpose that kept the pages turning. Every chapter held a surprise, and of course who could resist the vampire lover, Demetri? He was an instant favorite, with his brother in second place. The main character, Rayne, is a strong, yet passionate, young woman. I feel any reader could relate to her situation (given the circumstances, of course).

Very enjoyable, full of lust, adventure, and a taste for vengance! Very much recommended as a must-read!
