Special Agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt have been partners forever and lovers for three months, but their new relationship is threatened when Will is offered a plum two-year assignment in Paris.

Will believes the posting only means postponing what they both want. Taylor fears that kind of separation will mean the end of their new and still-fragile relationship. It's a bad time to find themselves in the middle of the New Mexico wilderness responsible for the health and welfare of a suspected terrorist. Especially when everyone else they run into seems determined to see their prisoner - and them - dead.

Will and Taylor are in New Mexico, hot on the trail of alleged terrorist Kelila Hedwig. When they catch her, they are in for a little and very inconvenient surprise:

She began to struggle.

Their prisoner In consequence, I wasn't taken aback when on that rather strenuous and eventful manhunt. Another issue that put a strain on their dangerous journey was Will's possible overseas assignment (no spoiler, read the blurb). Will has been invited to fill a vacancy at the embassy in Paris. This new assignment would last for the next two years. Even though Will and Taylor don't look forward to maintaining a long-distance relationship, it's a career boost Will can hardly resist. I'm definitely interested to see how this is going to pan out in the next installment Dead Run.

"MacAllister…Taylor…I'm not leaving you. I still want everything we talked about. I just…we're just asking about postponing it for a little while."
"Two years. Minimum."
Will caught Taylor's arm, bringing him to a halt. "I want this. I've worked hard for it."

Considering the previous novella Old Poison, I must confess that Blood Heat surprised me in a rather pleasant way. While the interaction somehow lacked in the previous short, I thought I got my money's worth in Blood Heat. It was unexpectedly revealing. Given the fact that Will and Taylor had to deal with adverse conditions, I very much appreciated all those emotional, affectionate and tender scenes, i.e.:

 photo oie_RIUK4izfpCe0_zpsvnvngrav.gif

Will continued to study Taylor like he was trying to memorize his face. "I love you."
Taylor moved his head in assent. His mouth tingled as Will traced his lower lip with the pad of his thumb. He lightly bit the finger.

 photo oie_WH2IGwyO9kzu_zpsvevl1cwj.gif

And this quote...

The sheer breathtaking illogic of that jump was only secondary to the deadly intuitive accuracy of it.

…makes me antsy to witness their "lovely" (upcoming?)

Bottom line, this third installment in the Dangerous Ground series is rather fast-paced and provides Lanyon's trademark wit, good action and suspense, excellent writing, some sensuous smexin' and a nice insight into Will and Taylor's stressful progressing relationship. Hopefully there won't be any substantial setbacks in Dead Run. Though I hardly remember the content of the first novella which I read in 2012, I'm inclined to say that Blood Heat might be my favorite so far.

Recommended read.

My ranking after three novellas
Blood Heat 3.5 stars (upgraded to 4 stars)
Dangerous Ground 3.5 stars (upgraded to 4 stars)
Old Poison 3.5 stars (downgraded to 3 stars)

The 3rd novella in the “Dangerous Ground” series has Will and Taylor going to New Mexico where they are running down an alleged terrorist. Quite a few surprises and not all of them favorable to the plot and our two characters. Will has a decision to make that will have a monumental effect on their new 3-month-old relationship. Lots of suspense and action as well as emotional suspense. The bickering & banter between Taylor & Will is always fun. I’m looking forward to seeing what's going to happen to both of them. I do wish these stories were longer but none of them have been a disappointment by any means. What else would I expect from Josh Lanyon?

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Can't feel the connection*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Re-read: 19.04.2018
It actually not so bad. I believe it was better this time around reading it. Though there's still that something that is missing to make me give it a full three stars instead if two point five. Because that something that is indeed missing is a huge part, and I believe it is that damn connection that the main two characters is supposed to have. I don't feel it so much. Sure I get that they love each other, but even with the kisses and sex scene, I still don't feel like they are a couple. I feel like they are just work partners with benefits. Overall, I like the action, I like the plot, but I'm having trouble with the characters emotions.

Will pulled him forward, wrestling him into a kind of bear hug where they could hang on tight and neither had to see the other's expression. Taylor rested his face in the bare, warm curve of Will's uninjured shoulder and listened to the shuddery sounds of Will fighting his feelings. He could hear the slow, heavy pound of Will's heart, and though he was not much for poetry, he suddenly remembered lines from some forgotten time and place—all his times and places having led, it seemed, to this moment.
The bleeding to death of time in slow heart beats, Wakeful they lie.

Other characters:
Riley, Will's five-year-old German shepherd.
↦ Lieutenant Commander David Bradley, was Will's temporary partner in book #2 and ex.
↦ Assistant Field Officer Director Greg Cooper, Taylor and Will's boss.
Ioakim Nemov, Licensed by the Colorado Insurance Division of the Department of Regulatory Agencies; Bounty hunter (a Fugitive Recovery Agent). A mad Russian.
Kelila Hedwig, a suspected terrorist who claims she's being framed. Is also highly pregnant.

“We're sticking together.”
“Would you listen to me?”
“Would you listen to me? I'm not leaving you out here.”
What a really bad time to get choked up, but Will was glaring at him, mouth thinned to a white line and eyes so bright they were glittering. Bad timing for both of them.
“Will…”
“I'm. Not. Leaving. You. Got that?”
Taylor took a deep breath. “It's okay. I know you'll come back.”
To his surprise, Will's hand closed on his shoulder and pulled him forward into a fleeting but adamant press of mouths.
“You're right. I will. Always.” He released Taylor and turned away. “Let's go. It can get dark fast in the mountains.”

Special Agents Taylor ‘Tay’ MacAllister (32) and William ‘Will’ Brandt (still don't know how old he is...?) are back in a third short story. Their relationship is still new, and things keep coming their way, putting it on the rocks. Will has a difficult decision to make, while Taylor is trying to not break over this decision. There's also a the problem of a pregnant woman they are trying to keep safe while others try to kill her... Overall, it was alright, but still so damn irritating meh. I want more; more depth, more feelings, more connection, more...just more! I'm getting kinda tried of not getting it from this one, though since each book is so short, I think I'll manage to finish the series... We'll see.

Five stars might be pushing it a bit... But then again, maybe not.

While it's not like this is one of the great works of literature, it's a book I just read for the 5th time, yet still enjoyed intensely. Will & Taylor are one of my all-time favorite couples, and it's a joy to watch them interact -- the smart (and smart-ass) dialogue, the awkward oh-shit-I-wish-I-hadn't-said-that moments, the silent rapport between them when they need to up their game to take on the bad guys.

There's more juicy exploration of the differences between them, and how they struggle to understand and accommodate each other. Being lovers, and being work partners who occasionally must put their lives at risk while on the job... well, there's a reason why their partnership would be broken up if their management ever discovered they were an item. Bookending the story there's a marvelous pair of scenes showing how each of them handles a threat to the other's life. Those scenes alone are worth the price of admission, and are why I simply cannot resist giving a 5-star rating.

But wait! There's more!

- Revelations about Will's past! And he gets hit with an unwanted insight into why he hasn't brought Taylor home yet to meet the family. Yeah, Will's not real big on insights into himself. That's not his thing.

- An agonizing decision hangs over Will's head, one that will affect their future for years to come! This time, he's actually talked to Taylor about it, rather than stewing over it alone. Progress!

- My favorite secondary character out of all Josh Lanyon's books!

When I finished this I was in an agony of suspense for the next one. Will had made his decision, and I needed to know what happened next, most desperately. I was so lucky that all I had to do was go to Amazon and buy it -- rather than wait for it to be written and published, like those poor unlucky souls who read this when it was first released. How you guys survived the delay, I do not know. I've rarely been so rabidly desperate for the next book in a series. And I can assure you, it did not disappoint.

Will and Taylor are slowly growing on me. Now an established couple, I like that they’re still fighting insecurities and trying to reassure each other that they’re all in, regardless of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles being thrown their way.

Once again, I enjoyed the fast-paced, danger-filled mission Will and Taylor found themselves embroiled in. Although, the abrupt ending left me with some questions about what happened to certain players in this particular story; I felt like I missed some pertinent details in those final scenes.

Overall, this was another solid addition to the Dangerous Ground series and I look forward to seeing how Will and Taylor deal with the upcoming new changes in their lives.

4 Stars - As a (gay) weekly TV cop-crime show but in the audiobook form instead - Very elegant and nicely done

Book #3

Josh Lanyon is one of my favorite authors and this morning was it time for the third part, Blood Heat in the audiobook Volume #1 - Armed and Dangerous: Four Dangerous Ground Novellas. As a plus also a supremely good narrator (Adrian Bisson). It couldn't but be a fun ride.

The result was...of course..

Yet another fast-paced story-part with funny bantering, action filled hilarious events and two wonderful agents in love.
A three-hour romance-crime-part a day make my life pleasant and enjoyable. It's a shame that there are not ten more to listening to.

My reviews so far in this five part novella series:
#1 - Dangerous Ground (3.7 stars)
#2 - Old Poison (3.8 stars)

Each book is around 100-120 pages long or 3-4 hours listening.

***********************************************************

Our two Special Agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security, Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt have been partners and best friends for three years. They started an intense steaming hot love affair just half a year ago. ~ Two guys I really, really enjoy to meet every time

***********************************************************

This time we meet Special Agents Taylor and Will in the New Mexico wilderness. They are looking for a suspected terrorist, a young girl who is, on the top of it all, also eight mounths pregnant.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

As always is also this third part, an very action filled adventure with gun shooting and a couple of very touchy cunning villains. Rougher, unpleasant men and women who also want to put this hand on this female prisoner for various reasons.
“Maybe Nemov carried her. He looked like he could.”
“He looked like he could carry his SUV. I don‟t know why he didn't.”

The girl, she is that inquisitive whiny type who claim that everything is a conspiracy. To get her back to LA starting to look totally impossible.

***********************************************************

In many respects are these Dangerous Ground stories just like a TV series with a new episode each week. A new and exciting criminal case, some assignments etc to solve, and two goodlooking cops or agents who fuss with each other.

They joke, scuffle and does some mischievous flirting, while they end up in the most dangerous situations. One resourceful wild (Taylor) character and one quieter stable (Will) character.

Yes well, you probably know the plot. Equally digestible and fun entertaining is it to watch it every time. ~ And in this one by Josh Lanyon, you get all that lovely hot manly tough gay steam as well.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

’Will leaned in, and his mouth covered Taylor's, rough but sweet, his tongue seeking Taylor's. Taylor opened willingly to that kiss, forgetting for a second his scratched, scraped hands and the rain running down the back of his neck. They kissed a lot these days, especially for men who had never been much for kissing. Taylor had become expert in all Will's kisses, from the hungry, lustful kisses that always made his own cock rise so fast it hurt, to the tender, almost cherishing kisses that Will generally saved for when he thought Taylor was sleeping.’

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

***********************************************************

A three hours listening once again narrated by a very attractive deep male raspy voice of Adrian Bisson. He does it so very well. I just love to hear his voice and feeling for these characters and their love and everyday life. ~ When he makes Will's deep voice rises all these tiny hairs on my arms and my toes start to curles as well (...almost anyway).

~ Thunderous applause, please !! This Mr Bisson man does a great job.

***********************************************************

I continue on this entertaining Taylor & Will journey without the slightest doubt. Two more to do!!! ~ Next up the forth part in this series: #4 - Dead Run.

I LIKE - ...cuddles and smiles as it chugs on

Best one of the series yet. I enjoyed the story and the relationship between Will and Taylor is starting to make more sense.

Summary
The third book of the Dangerous ground series starts three months after the events of the first book. In this instalment, both Will and Taylor are in New Mexico for a job to transport a suspected female terrorist to LA.

Romance
Did I mention before that for a collection of short novellas, these MCs have captured my attention? I have started liking their differences and how it creates a bit of angst but never diverts our focus from the case.

The major point of conflict between them in this book is Will's impending posting to Paris for the next two years. Taylor is not happy with the order and does not have any issue with saying so. He wants Will to not accept it but Will thinks long-distance is not a big issue for their relationship.

But, still, I liked the relationship development and lots of insight that we get from their conversation with the fugitive. The mystery surrounding this fugitive is interesting even though it's all over the place. So, overall I like this book more than book 2.

Another action-packed adventure for Will and Taylor. These guys can’t seem to catch a break, especially Taylor. 😂
I’d forgotten how highly entertaining and readable this series is, with a romance arc that fits these characters perfectly, even if it hurts right in the feelings.

This one was just OK for me. Why? I wasn't in the mood to listen to these two guys. Derek MacClain did a fantastic job narrating (he did the whole boxset), but not enough to keep me interested in the story.

I both like and dislike these guys....maybe that's part of the problem. When I start to like them, one of them goes and does something stupid.

Arrghhh....never mind me...this is a case of "It's me, not the book," apathy.

My rec? Don't trust my review on this one if you're already invested in the series.

Merged review:

This was my least favorite of the books so far. I'm not sure I like these guys yet & I don't really know why. Perhaps it's because they stray from the typical romance MC--they are more real and faulty. I'm not sure what that says about me as a reader, though, with this series. I usually dislike "typical" MCs, but these guys are so far from typical that they puzzle me.

This was as good as the last one. And finally, there's some relationship development, not much, don't get too excited, Will continues being Will, but... he at least tried, not with too much effor, but tried. And I'm thinking I'm going to buy a lottery ticket when lottery stores open again, because my theories are starting to be pretty accurate XD.

Oh Taylor! There's more in his silences, shrugs, head turnings, etc. than in a thousand words. I felt for Will, who offered his words of love and committment and got almost nothing in return, but I felt more for Taylor, who can come completely apart in his lover's arms and still be incapable of reassuring him.

The emotional part of the story plays on Will's future assignment to Paris and the fact that the two will be apart. I don't know if Will is really convinced that they can work it out. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book to find out what happens.

The action part of the story is very entertaining and funny. The two have the uncanny ability to put themselves in the most complicated situations and there were many times that I wished they'd pay more attention to what was happening around them than their bickering, but I also love when they look more like a married couple than a team of special agents.

Waiting for book #4!

Book 3 of the Dangerous Ground series and we're chugging right along with our boys Will and Taylor. I found this one a little slow and the story didn't keep me entirely interested. These books all feel like the "junior varsity" version of the Cut & Run series, and Will & Taylor the little brother versions of Ty & Zane. It's kind of like a decent 30 minute tv show where C&R is one of those great hour long favorites.

Still, the new plot twist of Will's pending promotion brought some much wanted tenderness and relationship drama and infused just enough emotion into the brief read.

I'm rooting for the 2 of them as the series concludes in the next book (though w/ Josh Lanyon series, it will mostly just end in some random "..." kind of way)

Blood Heat is the third book of the series and it does little to advance the characters, the relationship, or any general story arc. This offering is an amusing and entertaining romp as a chance to revisit favorite and familiar characters. That’s not a bad thing per se as the writing is very typical of Lanyon and the characters quite enjoyable to read. However, I’m left wishing the story had contributed something to the characters or even their relationship since if anything these two are headed in the opposite direction with a two year separation coming up. Fans of the series will definitely want to read this for a visit with two entertaining and great characters but I’d be surprised if the non-ending is a hit.

The story follows Will and Taylor as they attempt to apprehend a fugitive. Of course these two have decided to do it all alone without back up and without telling anyone what they’re doing. They end up in the middle of nowhere (again of course) and have some trouble. The fugitive is pregnant and Taylor kind of buys into her claims of innocence. Add in a bounty hunter, some Russian operatives, and a dangerous flash flood and the whole thing is just a mess. Not to mention Will and Taylor seem to be having some relationship problems as Will is poised to head to Paris for two years.

The plot is very action driven and moves quite fast. On the one hand this makes for a very quick novella and I finished it before I even realized I was close to the end. Yet, there are several coincidences and some pretty outrageous leaps to make the logic of the plot make sense. The characters and their great chemistry definitely help smooth this over with some very good dialogue and banter. After all it’s still entertaining if you can suspend enough disbelief to buy into the story.

The action also serves as an excuse to ignore some pretty big relationship issues cropping up. Will and Taylor have been together for five months now and Will is about to leave for Paris for two years due to a promotion. The fact that Will got the promotion over the more senior Taylor is only mentioned once and without offering any reasoning. Additionally the clear strain this puts on their relationship isn’t really handled and actually the story offers very little advancement to either character or their relationship. They once again affirm their commitment to each other but the issues aren’t handled. They’re brought up and ignored in favor of action or sex.

I doubt many fans will mind since the action makes for an entertaining story on several levels. The writing is very typical for the author and contains all the strengths that create stories you don’t put down. This is a quick novella with good banter and the men have a really enjoyable chemistry -both as partners and lovers. The non-ending is a hitch though and the fact that the couple is headed for separation is a double edged sword. It guarantees more books (yay!) but also leaves the story unfinished and hanging (ugh). Fans of the series will enjoy this, just don’t expect a happy ending.

SPOILERS EVERYWHERE BUT MOSTLY HERE IN THIS REVIEW.

So in this book they’re protecting Harry Potter’s pregnant owl from some bro’s that wanna shoot her. They decide to capture her, while basically out of their jurisdiction, and then take her back to the bossman themselves. Foolproof right? Wrong. Because everyone wants this little chica dead. Through this book they’re struggling because Will wants to take a promotion with a minimum of two years working in Paris, oh-lala. Classic William. It’s tearing Taylor up inside but he tries to be a good sport about it, but it’s hard.. you know. Because of the two year across-the-world thing.

Carrying on. Basically, a bunch of crap happens, some EXTREMELY hot sex included. Actually, quite a bit of hot sex included, and they get the pregnant girl, who turns out to be innocent, to a doctor where she can name her baby after them. Also, Taylor shoots William and William has a bit of a hissy fit. One of the best part’s of the series. **Highlight**
So, in the end, William, the selfish bugger he is, accepts the promotion in Paris.

Lesson of this book: Harry Potter wants his owl back.

3,5 stars but I have the feeling that we're inching toward 4.

This is the 3rd installment in the Dangerous Ground series and I liked it better than the previous ones. Will and Taylor are probably growing on me but I also liked the humor brought by their interactions with Kelila and the intrigue was neat even if it was fast in its resolution.
I liked that the problem raised by a lover/partner relationship was a strong element of the story and most of all, I liked the subtile shivers of angst. At last, I feel or hope that the ending leads us toward more depth in the MCs development.

Like the previous books the third installment of the Dangerous Ground series is a short story. Once again Will and Taylor get caught up in a fast paced adventure. And they are experiencing twists and turns in their professional and personal lives and have to face concerns about their future together. It's an excellent addition to the series. Fortunately the next installment is waiting!

This was a better story for me than the one before. It kind of made more sense, plot wise. Still fast paced and I wish it was longer. The series is starting to remind me of Abigail Roux's Cut & Run series. If Lanyon were to ever expand this I would be extremely happy. :)

I have to say this one rated a bit less than the previous ones. Although there was plenty of action and angst for me it lacked some of the intentness that the other books had. Not sure why.

On the bright side, I so love Taylor's sense of humor and his reactions to nature and wildlife. I could easily feel his emotions when he was struggling to come to terms with Will's probable departure and yet trying to do the right thing by him. I could understand that after committing to a relationship, he was afraid distance could end it. And then there was Will, serious as ever, realising the depths of his feelings for Taylor but also wishing to further his career. I admired the faith he had in his resolve to stay with Taylor, though he was unable to pass that to his partner.

I enjoyed the action in the book, though at point there were too many things going on, too many bad guys out of nowhere. And that chick was a bit annoying, always running away. But I was sucked in by the plot and wondered what kind of ending it would have.

I was a bit surprised by the last few paragraphs and maybe I read it wrong, but it seemed as if they were separating forever. I need another installment where they live happily ever after. I like them too much to not be sure of that.

The only reason why I gave this book 4 stars is because of Taylor & Will. I just love this couple but I'm not a big fan of the cases they have to solve. Anyway, they are one of the most adorable couples ever and they remind me a lot about Ty & Zane. I can't wait to start book 4 tomorrow to see what's going to happen next with them.

Maybe just 3.5 stars...this is the point my memory is failing me since I pretty much read all six of these as one...

This one has the closest thing to a cliffhanger you will find in this series, but it's a cliffhanger in the personal sense, not the action plot. I can't even imagine reading Book 3 without immediately jumping to Book 4, but this is why I read series differently than everyone else. If you aren't bingeing, you just aren't doing it right!!

But this book also starts to cement my favorite thing about Will, which is his absolute faith in Taylor as an agent/work partner. I don't love some of their decisions here, but I much prefer this real-world/logical approach to an adult relationship than the insta-tropes.

These things take time and patience in the real world, and you're definitely going to need that patience for this one...

This is a case where I like the couple generally, but the nature of the story always seems to rely on some ridiculous premise to make them face something together. In this case it's tracking down a fugitive whose, whoops no one knew, pregnant. Of course over the top action ensues. Drama, drama, drama...must worry that one of us is going to be killed and make stupid decisions because of it. Then make up, save the day, and take a teeny step forward in our relationship.

I saw all that, but then because these are only novellas they read so short and I'm entertained while reading them. The characters are engaging and I do hope for them to have a good result with their relationship. The secrecy seems to be coming to a head as Will's got a job offer overseas and neither Will or Taylor is sure how to make that work. Still I liked that eventually the at least started to talk about things and commit that they do want to make it work together no matter what.

More action, suspense and danger for Will and Taylor, but there was humor too. It was funny watching how awkward the guys were around a pregnant woman.

I love how protective Will is of Taylor. He'll never forget Taylor getting shot. Will loves Taylor so much. It will be interesting to see how their relationship handles a long separation in the next book.
