Madeline Carter is a former stockbroker who moved to California to start over. She's asked to mentor the wife of a billionaire producer who wants to get into stock trading. The wife is murdered at a party and Madeline can't stop herself from investigating. Like a grown-up Nancy Drew she gets herself into all kinds of scrapes and manages to get out of them. I thought the mystery was pretty simple and the killer very obvious.

The third book in the Madeline Carter series.

Carter, a former stockbroker, is asked to mentor the wife of a rich producer. But when the wife is murdered at a party, she cannot help but get herself embroiled in the investigation to uncover the murderer. It’s a bit of a slow burner, but once it gets to the crux, as a reader you really won’t want to put it down.

Even by Hollywood standards, five is a big number if you're counting ex-wives.

Teaching an indulged rich wife to dabble in the stock market is the last thing former stockbroker Madeline Carter wants to do. But she's lived among the Hollywood elite just long enough to recognize the ubiquitous "favor for a favor" when she sees it, so she reluctantly agrees to tutor the current wife of "A" list film producer Maxi Livingston.

Up until a couple of days ago the only thing Madeline knew about Maxi was what she'd read in the tabloids. But she soon learns a whole lot more, including the fact that the current Mrs. Livingston has plans to build a nest egg for herself -- in the stock market. Interesting.

But "interesting" doesn't begin to cover it when Maxi's ex-wives are killed off one by one and Madeline finds herself in the middle of a scenario worthy of the most imaginative screenwriter -- where she is the prime suspect.

Madeline's new boyfriend is killed in her apartment because he was there finishing the floors, and she wasn't there. Maxi Livingston is guilt. He killed his girlfriend/partner years earlier and blocked her body up in a garden house to get her money.

The Next Ex takes place in the world of the movie business. The element that makes this book interesting is the involvement the main character has with the stock market and the mixing of the two ways of life. I enjoyed this book up until the ending.

2nd in a "series" or at least with the same main character. Really enjoyed the plot and the characters, with light, funny parts and darker, sadder parts too.
Still can´t believe the silly woman went into the dark crypt alone though...!

Ms Richards has created a relatable character in stock broker turned day trader Madeline Carter.
This is the second in the series - and I like it even better than the first

I guess this one gets 3 stars. In some ways it is good, but in others unsatisfying. Why the comments about Maxi nearby after the first murder? The ending feels too open in some ways.

Pronoun and homonym errors annoyed me. I just didn't find this story believable.
