New Orleans Trilogy #3

Sweet Suspicion

Rate this book
Muse Summerville was the only living witness whose testimony could put a notorious crime boss behind bars. Remi Beaulieux was the FBI special agent assigned to her safety. The FBI had rules about that sort of thing. But in the twenty-four hours since he'd laid eyes on her, Remi had broken every last one of them.

For years Muse had hidden behind her reputation as a party girl. But sharing every moment of every day--and every sultry second of every night--with her sexy protector was making it hard to hide anything. Suddenly her life wasn't the only thing on the line.

So, we met Muse in the previous book Sweet Revenge. She is someone who loves and enjoys life, wears outrageous clothes and parties too hard, but the life she lives is a total contrast to who she really is, underneath she is someone who is scared of physical intimacy after she was forced by a jock in college, she loves kissing but anything beyond that terrifies even after the very few attempts she has made, so she keeps it simple and flirts and tries to find fulfillment and get some sort of control by wearing revealing clothes. Messed up? But that is the way it is. She still believes that love is not for her after the wringer their father put her and her sister through. For the past six months she has been assisting the FBI in trying to nab a criminal and when it looks as if she may have been busted, she is taken into hiding(events in Sweet Revenge starts from this).

Remi is someone we met in the book Catch me if you can. He is an FBI agent who has spent most of his life under-cover. He doesn't believe in ties and after what his father and mother did to him doesn't want them. He realizes that Muse is a personal threat but since no-one seems to be at hand he is the one who takes her into hiding, he soon realizes that both of them are the same, they hide behind their outward persona. Remi helps Muse get over the fear she has, there is no immediate solution and he is patient and understanding with her but Muse is not helpless female she knows how to shoot and even take initiative.

I enjoyed the book and seeing these two fight but inevitably fall for each other.

Another satisfying book from Nina Bruhns. I don't know why I have given it a lower star rating than the other two in the series. It seemed to be less passionate, maybe?? I was expecting a lot more loving. In the previous book you are lead to believe that Muse is a bit of a wild child. Turns out a bit different, but I won't spoil it for you. She has her reasons and they are good ones. Remi was a sweetheart and I love him for his patience and understanding, what a gorgeous man.

I love Nina's Cajun men. It's been a long while since I read the first two books in the series. This is the last book in the trilogy.

Language - I've always liked how Nina intertwined some French sayings with a quick explanation. Also thought it was fun and interesting to hear the story behind T-Bone's name. Felt natural and organic with what the women's future would be like with the mix of cultures.

It was interesting to read book three as it was the other sisters perspective from book two but still very separate stories. The books may be read separately with no issue. Even read together I didn't find any annoying overlap that would feel like a drag or a retelling. It has in fact make me want to read book two, 'sweet revenge' again.

The other character like develin felt distinctive and carved out.
Good balance between romance and intrigue. I'm a big romance fan and there was more than enough romance to satisfy me. I also love the fast romance, deeply sincere heart on your sleeve moments. I liked the background story for Muse. It was unexpected and wouldn't have guessed it from book two.

Remi is an FBI agent, sent to protect witness Muse from a gang of killers. (Well, the leader of a gang, plus henchmen.) He's expecting a shallow party girl, but what he gets is an interesting, layered and extremely vulnerable woman - a woman he finds more attractive than any before.

I vaguely remember reading this a few years back and not liking it, so I was surprised to find it quite sweet on this go-round. The subject matter is not to my taste - as a past victim of rape, I tend to stay away from books that deal with the subject, not because I find it triggering but rather the opposite - I find most books overdramatise the effects of it and I end up feeling like a freak for still being functional and happy. (I am not in any way implying that women - or men - who are raped never go through emotional anguish, just that not all of us do, and those of us who pick ourselves up without much trouble and go on to have healthy relationships are extremely underrepresented, both in fiction and non-fiction.) That said, the way it was handled in this book was better than most I've read. Remi was very sweet and patient, and Muse was far less of a wilted blossom than I remember her being from my first read.

I enjoyed the setting - I've always liked New Orleans and the surrounding areas - and the details about the plantations and the wrought-iron pieces that Muse loves so much. Little details like that really make a book come alive for me.

I was less impressed by Muse's stupid, reckless flight back to New Orleans. After spending 3/4 of the book being much more mature and sensible than I'd expected, she goes and does something stupid and headstrong like that, because she feels like Remi's being controlling. Uh, he's your bodyguard. On matters of personal safety, he gets to order you around. It doesn't mean he wants to exert control over you in every area. But he's the expert, he's there to keep you safe, and if you're too dumb to realise that in dangerous situations you defer to whoever has the most experience and training...then you're dumber than I thought.

I rated this 4 stars when I'd just finished it, but I think I have to drop it to 3, because Muse's actions towards the end of the book really annoyed me. But it is still a sweet book, with a dash of hotness and a dollop of suspense, and though I won't read it again, it was a nice read this time round.

New Orleans Trilogy, book 3

Set against the sultry backdrop of the New Orleans French Quarter and the bayous of South Louisiana, SWEET SUSPICION is the story of two people running from a man with murder on his mind, but they discover something much more dangerous… each other.

Remi Beaulieux is a man without a home. A long-time deep cover agent for the FBI, the last thing on his mind is love. Certainly not with a woman like Muse Summerville, the wild-child pleasure-seeker he is tasked with protecting from the wrath of the New Orleans crime boss she’s slated to testify against. But Muse is sexy and intriguing, and nothing like Remi expected. She’s smart and sassy, with a streak of sweetness that touches his heart. From the minute he meets her, he finds himself fighting a losing battle against an attraction that won’t quit. But he senses she’s hiding something…

To the outside world, Muse Summerville projects an image of wildness and confidence, the life of the party surrounded by friends and lovers. What the world doesn’t know is that it’s all a façade. Inside she is still feeling the effects of something that happened long, long ago. Something that prevents her from getting too close. Sure, she flirts and dances, but she always keeps her emotional distance, always sleeps alone. For Muse, Agent Beaulieux is just another in a long string of bad boy rogues drawn to the facade she hides behind–albeit this time she has no choice about being with him. But Muse is not about to reveal her secret to any man alive. Especially not one who begins to stir emotions she’s always assumed she was incapable of feeling.

Sweet end to a Trilogy

The final book in this trilogy didn't disappoint.

I like how the author tied it into the events of the sequel so we could see how Grace's sister, Muse, had actually caused her events to happen and how Muse dealt with the situation she was in.

I also love how the author touched on Beau and Kit from the first book. It was nice to know how their romance and lives were coming a long.

I would recommend this trilogy to anyone who loves a good romance, loves those hard to put down books, and easy reads.

This book was great! Helped to fill in the gaps of what actually happened with Muse, while her sister was searching for her.

There is nothing like a classic Harlequin writing style! I believe at one point I read this sentence: "And surrendered to the sweet power of his love."
