Love is magical in USA Today bestselling author Lisa Plumley's enchanting new novel about a runaway witch and the warlock who's on her trail—and in her thrall...

Dayna Sterling's always been betwixt and between. Born in a desert town populated by witches and blissfully ignorant humans, Dayna had magic, but no clue how to handle it. So she left to forge a workaday life among ordinary Joes. Which is fine, really—until the day one most extraordinary Joe turns everything upside down...

The assignment is simple. Trace the runaway witch; bring her home for compulsory cusping training. So why does Dayna set T.J. McAllister's half-warlock blood buzzing? Maybe it's the bonding spell that spontaneously connects them. Or the fact that T.J.'s powers go wonky whenever he's around Dayna. In any case, the attraction is making it damn hard for T.J. to accomplish his most important mission: prevent a dangerous uprising by locating a powerful witch prophesied to help him. She could be anywhere. She could be closer than he thinks...

The Good: The idea of magic classes for witches coming into their power is always a win for me, especially twisting it so that the real power doesn't show up until the women are 30.

The Bad: Lust masquerading as love. T.J.'s blatant stalking of Dayna portrayed as his being drawn to her, rather than being a Peeping Tom with an entire catalog of issues. A completely predictable Mean Girls comeuppance story line, except they aren't teenagers anymore and that makes the entire attitude really kind of pitiful. No one is likable. No one is saying or doing anything that would make you care what happens to them. There was absolutely nothing romantic going on in this romance novel.

Have you ever felt inspiration hit you? You know...when an idea just pops into your head and you have to write it down? When a trickle of a thought becomes a tidal wave? Something like that must have happened to Ms. Plumley.

From her letter to readers in the book, the author states never having written in the paranormal romance genre. You could not tell. Ms. Plumley built a complex world with history and culture. The witches and warlocks who practice magic have been in hiding from humankind since the witch hunts centuries ago. Most want to live their lives away from humanity, while others seeks refuge in it. One such was the heroine. Dayna was never very good at magic and always felt the outsider. When she had the chance she fled to the human world of office machines, traffic jams and ATMs. T.J. is sent by his bosses at the IAB (think a magic using version of the FBI) to bring back this roaming witch so that she can participate in classes that will bring her into her full witch powers. Let's just say that Dayna does not wish to return and wreaks a little havoc (unconsciously) before T.J. can convince her to come with him. T.J. finds Dayna frustrating, stubborn and very attractive. Also she turns out to be his bonded lifemate, which he REALLY wasn't expecting.

Meanwhile, not all is well in Covenhaven. There are some witches and warlocks who want a return to the Old Ways and will use black magic to do so. There is a traitor in the IAB. Dayna has to sit through classes that are reminiscent of high school including the mean girl cliques and then deal with T.J. who is in denial of their mutual attraction to one another.

So My Favorite Witch contains romance, humor and a suspenseful subplot that keeps you reading.

All in all, I enjoyed My Favorite Witch. Hopefully, there will be more tales from Covenhaven.

Recommended.

I found the storyline interesting. A 30 year old witch is coming of age. She has never been good at magic so she went to live among humans. She suddenly finds herself being forced to practice magic again. She becomes bonded to a warlock and learns that she has a lot more potential then she believed. I thought the book opened up some great possibilities for future novels.

However I only gave it 3 stars and would never recomend this book to friends for two reasons. First, I hate it when authors use swear words as if it is a part of ever day language. I find it crude and uncomfortable. Not everyone talks like that! Secondly, the relationship between T.J. and Dayna was WAY to based on sex. Don't kid yourself Ms Plumley. That is not love... It would have been nice if they actually took some time to develope a real realtionship. I mean come on seriously... did they ever talk about anything or do anything other then be sexually intimate when they were together?

The front of this book reads, 'hilarious'. Uh, no. I looked at the authors backlog, and this is her one and only witch book. Yeah, just leave it at that. I was confused through most of it because the world building was very poor. It's mean girls vs. a 'cusping' witch. Plus sex, talking about sex and thinking about sex. -sigh- Not interested.

Finally...! -Raises fist- I haven't had time to visit the bookstore lately, so when I went yesterday, man was it heaven on earth. I even managed to find Lisa's new release, My Favorite Witch, within all my scrambling.

Okay, first let’s talk about the cover. I like it. But it has nothing to do with the book itself. A spooky kind of love it says. There is no ghost or spook or anything like that in the book. No graveyeard, no church, no bats. Only lots of witches and warlocks, but they are certainly not flying on a broomstick. Yes, it does take place around Halloween. Irritatingly spelled in a strange way in this book.

Dayna Sterling is a witch who ran away from home after highschool. Highschool was a horrible time for her. She is miserable at doing magic, most spells go wrong for her, and she is the laughingstock of the school. Her parents will never be proud of her. So she has gone to live in the human world, forsaking her magic. But now she has turned 30, her powers seem to be on the fritz even more than usual. But she likes her new life, her friends, and her work. She is good at what she does.

And then a tracer shows up at her work, determined to bring her forcefully back to Covenhaven. And so he just kidnaps her. He doesn’t even give her the time to change her wet clothes, and pack her bags. What does she need human made stuff for in
Covenhaven? She can just conjure up whatever she needs. Yeah, if only! But something goes wrong, when they accidentally bond together. The unwanted attraction between them is hard to ignore.

When dumped in the streets of Covenhaven by TJ and the driver, Deuce, a turned human, she is ordered to report in at AID at once. The only problem is, her magic is so non existent, she can’t see the magicked entrance to the offices. As it appears, when a witch hits 30, her powers come more strongly on line, called “cusping”. And now she has been brought back here for witch classes, so she can learn to control her magic and pass her exams. Going back to highschool for three weeks is the most horrible thing she can imagine, especially when all the witches she grew up with will be there as well. And o yeah, classes started yesterday, so she is already behind on the rest. But if there is no other choice, and she really doesn’t want to endanger innocent humans with her runaway magic, she straightens her shoulders, and goes for it.
And it is every bit as horrible as she imagined. Even her best friend from back then is changed beyond recognition. She is wearing a pastel twin set, works at a child care facility, is married, a mother, owns a dog and is a member of the PTA. All the things they swore they would never do. But well, when Dayna left for the human world, she also left her best friend behind without keeping in touch. Still, it is great to see her again.

When Dayna realises she is not being house in a dorm room, with roommates and a chaperone, like told before, but living with Deuce instead, because his partner asked him to keep an eye on her, she doesn’t know what to think. But having sex is a very casual and necessary thing for witches and warlocks, so when she finds TJ outside, sunbathing in the nude, she knows she wants him. Yes, she does know that consummating their relationship will cement the matingbond between them, but she still thinks that will only be temporarily. After graduation, she will go back to her normal life.
And when a witch wants a warlock, the warlock usually has little chance of telling her no. They truly are a horny lot.

TJ is half warlock, and half Patayan, but fully powerful with magic. He is the best tracer the buro has, but now he has been put on suspension when he refuses to dance to his bosses demands. His Patayan magus has told him some dark magic is brewing in Covenhaven, the Old Ways are back, and he needs to find a Vixen witch to help them fight it. And so he tails some of the witches in Dayna’s class, finding it impossible to stay out of her way. He is determined to do his job, and save mankind. But can he trust this unknown witch enough to let her safe the day?

I am still not sure if I liked this book or not. The first part, the brutal abduction from her life, was getting my hackles up. They could have informed her by letter or telephone, that she needed to come back home for training, explaining things. And if she did not comply, then they could have send a tracer to bring her in. But just abducting her from her normal life, that felt so wrong.
Dayna accepted it pretty quick though, resigning herself to her fate. She has a strange relationship with her parents, and when they finally revealed what happened in Dayna’s childhood, I really was flabbergasted. How could they do that to her? Did they not see how terribly unhappy she was?
So when the cool girls finally reached out to her, seeming to accept her in their midst, I think Dayna should have been more leary. But she was just happy to be bonding. Witches are not meant to be solitary in this world.

The evil plot was evil indeed, but I did enjoy the ending of the book.
I did like Dayna, how she perseveres and studies, and does her best, even though her magic keeps backfiring. She wants to graduate, and get back to her normal life. But TJ makes her doubt her plans when she falls for him more and more.
And TJ is a strange mixture of magics and heritage. Sunbathing in the nude gets his powers revved up, and a betrayal of his trust is almost killing him from the pain of it. Not all is well at IAD though, and it takes quite a while for him to figure it all out.

The story itself was surprising, and good, but at times I found it a bit childish. Lots of sex, a nice sense of humor, but still not enough for me to make me really like this book and want to read more by this author. Still, this is a stand alone novel, and perhaps I will try one of her series someday. It really is not bad, but just not for me.

Fun chick-lit romp about a magically challenged witch living among humans who is forced to return home to take cusping-witch magical classes. Along the way she becomes bonded to a gorgeous warlock, learns about her magical heritage, becomes more self-confident, and finally understands that love and trust can accomplish anything.

I loved the general concept of this story, and had high hopes for it. Even though I didn't read the whole story there were things that I found great and would have loved to have seen expanded upon, and things I found not so great, which enviably had me not being able to finish it and just largely skimming through.

I will start with the great things I read that could have made a great story I feel if only expanded upon, or sadly to say maybe if a little bit more thought had been put into it.

- Dayna Sterling because her character was NOT that stupid over reacting female who made stupid decisions and put herself in danger because of some stupid idiotic logic.

- The world building was in my opinion well done(and probably the best part of the book) in the beginning, and I felt while reading it that it made sense and was explained easily and molded into the story without feeling overwhelming or that you would get lost in it.

- I loved the idea of being bonded and what it meant for him to be bonded, and the need for them both was instant and strong and neither one of them had to play the I don't know if he/she feels the same way game.

- I loved the fact that Dayna felt confident in her sexual prowess and that she knew she was seducing T.J. and that it worked without him smirking at her or embarrassing her, as you sometimes see in other books. Also her power that shocked them both also worked for me.

- The love scenes were greatly done and had the right amount of steam, but mostly the amazing detail of the bond they shared.

- Of Course I liked T.J. too, thought he was great Alpha Male and Hero, and who wouldn't love it when a man's power goes on the fritz when his woman is around.

Now for the not so great things that led me to not finish this book in its entirety, that I felt were either nerve grating or maybe the pace was just too slow for me.

- If I read the word witch once, I read it 1,000 times in multiple forms. Such as: Witch, Witchy, Witchstory, Witchfolk, Witchmade, and I am sure there are more but really I think we get it. The story is about witches.

- Then there was the word Magic and is multiple forms, which was used to explain everything seemingly unexplainable in book about Witches. Or wait was it suppose to be MAJIK?

- I also hated that everytime something MAGIC/MAJIK happened Dayna was always surprised, shocked, or agog with disbelief that Magic/Majik would/could actually happen around Witches and Warlocks.

- I also didn't like that Dayna didn't know who she was and that she didn't find out until the near end of the book. With that said it kind of irked me how she all of a sudden and her powers full force when she found out. Like just because she had a super title she believed in herself.

The ending was lack luster and although I am happy they ended up together I felt the whole event they were leading up to should have somehow been bigger, and more important feeling. I feel as if it was just put there to close out that story line and that it wasn't every really as important as the love story.

Dayna Sterling ran away from her hometown as soon as she could and has been carving out a normal human life for herself as a research assistant in Phoenix, Arizona. But Dayna isn't human...she's a witch and half-warlock tracer T.J. McAllister has been dispatched to bring her home to Covenhaven. Dayna is about to cusp and come into her full powers which makes her a danger to those around her so T.J. is supposed to bring her in for manditory training. Dayna has other plans, and she's going to turn T.J.'s world upside down.

This is one of those books that has been sitting around waiting to be read for quite a while so I can't really remember what stood out to me to make me buy it. It is set in the three weeks before Halloween so it is a very seasonal read at the moment. I did enjoy the book, but I felt like there was something missing and the storyline was disappointingly predictable.

The book's strength and weakness lies in the world and storylines developed within. The author has done a great job in creating a world where witches, warlocks and patayans live alongside unknowing humans and I loved how there is an InterAllied Bureau who run the magical world. That said the races aren't developed beyond the absolute basics which means the book never fully lives up to its potential which is a shame as I would have loved to see the patayan angle explained more, especially given the secondary storyline where T.J. is looking for a special witch called the juweel who will prevent a fast-approaching species based war.

Dayna is a great spunky lead which works well against T.J.'s more brooding nature. Their romance is the standard romance novel type but there is an undercurrent of self-acceptance which adds an unusual dimension to the story while strengthening the narrative. I loved T.J.'s anti-witch human partner Deuce as he helps ground the story, and Garmin quickly fills the role of annoying paper-pushing jerk.

All in all, this was a fun read and I'll probably read more by this author.

Hmmm... Read as a buddy read for October's PIFM Challenge. First let me say that I'm sorry Nairabell. I should have heeded some of the negative reviews and picked a better book.

Dayna Sterling is a 30 YO witch. In a witch's world that means that she is finally going through her witch puberty and getting her magic in full. Of course she's never really had much witch magic. In fact she gave up on being a witch completely and moved to the human world where she works as a research assistant. It turns out that the witching world wants her back. So they send out an agent to forcibly retrieve her for classes. Did they send telegrams? Did they call? Did they send her e-vites for that matter? NO. They send a duo of their best agents to coral this chick several days late for a forced witch class.

TJ, our theoretical hero, is the retrieval agent who bonds with our heroine. As a sometimes all powerful, sometimes completely weak, warlock, shaman, earth druid, nudist, TJ has some serious trust issues stemming from something somewhere in his past. These are never explained.

I'm not sure what bugs me the most about this book. Is it the two dimensional character outlines with few redeeming qualities who never change and appear to be driven by abject stupidity? Or maybe the giant plot holes? No, I think it is the predictability of the whole thing. The bad guys are who you think they are (and many go unpunished which also bugs me). There is nothing surprising whatsoever. Oh wait, there is one surprising thing. Our 'hero' who is physically crippled at the thought of deception and betrayal has sex with our villainess while supposedly in a lifelong bond with our heroine. To compound matters, he is disguised as someone else so the woman he has sex with doesn't even know with whom she is having sex.

I've read other Lisa Plumley books. All I can say is that I think she should stick to light contemporary romance.

I agree with one of the other reviewers that the back to school plot was a little tedious, and the romance could have been developed a little more. I also found some of the first third of the book dragged a bit. But once it got going, it really got going and was hard to put down. The characters were well drawn and easy to like. You really end up rooting for Dayna and T.J., who true to romance genre, end up briefly separated due to a misunderstanding. But even in the end there could have been a little more romance/wrap-up. The ending felt abrupt, because I wanted to see more of how they interacted once the all was right again. It all wrapped up neatly with a bow at the end, and didn't even leave room for a sequel or series...or did it?

It was a fun, engaging read. I would recommend it.

The book has a very interesting premise, but for the most part it was disappointing. The characters are flat and one-dimensional, and T.J.'s actions bothered me for most of the book. I think the whole "I can't trust anyone" was overplayed, and it got to the point where I was rolling my eyes every time it was mentioned. There were also a number of discrepancies within the book, when one thing is said about magic but then contradicted in the next chapter. Finally, there was a huge build-up to the final action scene, and it was over in about two paragraphs. Some nice love scenes though, which earned it two stars.

Pretty much just what the doctor ordered. Having been disappointed by Battle for Gullywith and it being Halloween I started this light story about love, lust and magic and was sucked right in.

It is pretty predictable. Girl is dragged back to her home town where she has to deal with her magic by a handsome lawman, who also happens to be a magic user. Add in some high-school politics, and some world domination plots along with a couple who have difficulty being clothed around each other and you have a fun story.

It's light, fun and if you examine some of the plot it does fall down but it entertained and sucked me in for a while.

I laughed through a good part of this book. Dayna is a 30 year old "cusping" witch. One that's considered a renegade as she had never been too good with her spells and magic so she ran to the totally mortal world. Enter one T.J. who's a Tracer to find all the cusping witches who have not come in for their "formal" training - a new rule in the witch community. But something big going down and TJ has been working on it, Dayna stumbles into unintentionally and then finds the answer that TJ won't listen to. Dayna has the answer, but will TJ listen in time to save the day???

I picked this book up because it had a cute cover and was at a store closing for only $2.00. The story line was good but there were too many types of witches and magic to keep track of. I was confused through the first part of the book. A glossary in the front would have been helpful. The story was a bit predictable from the beginning. There really wasn't any mystery as to what was going on just watching the clueless characters try to figure it out. Not sure that I will be picking up any of her other work any time soon.

I really enjoyed this book. It even made me late for work this morning. It is always a good sign when I cannot put a book down.
This love story was pretty simple. The big, powerful law man (with his sweet and loveable partner) take on an assignment to bring in a girl he cannot resist and sparks fly. And don't forget the beautiful popular girls (or women in this case) that want to take over the world . . . Really sweet book :)

It was a cute, fun, easy read. I enjoyed it. The storyline was adorable and well-developed as it went along. However, the male lead is a jerk, so if it's important to you that a romantic hero be heroic and gentlemanly, this may not be for you. He's from a people where betrayal or disloyalty causes physical pain, but he can't believe in his own love? Yuck. He grows or whatever, but it's still ridiculous.

A light paranormal romance that had a good premise, but weak character development and immature characters. They read more like they were in the their 20s, not their 30s. The world-building was decent in the beginning, but holes began to show as the plot went on. Doesn't appear to be part of a series. I'm not a big fan of Zebra historicals, and if this book is an example, I won't be reading their parnormals, either.

an easy read

Plumley offers an interesting story, one that will hold attention for the duration. An important task is offered, though it isn’t well-defined until the conclusion. I found the book to be predictable, though I kept hoping for increased complexity. Given more depth, I could have rated this work higher than two stars; I am confident that many readers will do so.
