Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (Cyrillic: Иван Сергеевич Тургенев) was a novelist, poet, and dramatist, and now ranks as one of the towering figures of Russian literature. His major works include the short-story collection A Sportsman’s Sketches (1852) and the novels Rudin (1856), Home of the Gentry (1859), On the Eve (1860), and Fathers and Sons (1862).

These works offer realistic, affectionate portrayals of the Russian peasantry and penetrating studies of the Russian intelligentsia who were attempting to move the country into a new age. His masterpiece, Fathers and Sons, is considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.

Turgenev was a contemporary with Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy. While these wrote about church and religion, Turgenev was more concerned with the movement toward social reform in Russia.

3.75 stars - What an interesting story. I've only read one other Turgenev work where he explores the concepts of science v religion and logic v spirituality and they have both made me think in a way I hadn't really thought of before. This story is like a story/essay on the power of cult leaders have over the masses. By the end you aren't left to guess what Turgenev believes (in regards to Science v Religion) but it just adds to the power of the story. Oh how I wish this was longer.

*Read for class.

I didn't get it. It was weird and I didn't see much of the logic. I mean, I guess I understand the main point of this novella, but the execution (as well as the point) was very meh. Not for me.

Trotz ihres Alters zeitlose Geschichten.

With a direct, objective and thought-provoking narrative, Turgenev walks through the universe of fantastic realism, even though this is not his specific literary genre.

The selection of short stories from this book is very interesting and deals with the ambiguity between reality and daydreaming, vigil and dreaming, the parallelism between cognitive and imagination.
