Was first introduced to Shakespeare through this very collection. Fell in love with the illustrations

No Iambic Pentameter here.
The first paragraph of the introduction tells the best of what is to come. – “This is a Family book. Parents can read to children, children can read to each other or themselves, and perhaps the most important of all, tiny children can enjoy the pictures.”
This covers five selected plays:
Macbeth
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Romeo and Juliet
Twelfth Night
Hamlet
Even though I enjoy them all I bought this to add to my Hamlet collection. Knowing what other people think and how they interpret the play is interesting. This is definitely a retelling, but even retelling gives a different insight.

One of the best for children, very charming and thorough, and the illustrations are wonderfully memorable. Fantastic read-aloud.

The versions of Shakespeare for children that I've read were like reading Cliff Notes....until this one! Bernard Miles paints mental pictures that make the stories live. It makes all the difference to have an author who was not only a writer, but also a director and actor. Definitely use with older children or edit as a read aloud.

I received this book as a gift from my older sister when I was ten. I loved it then, and now I'm reading it to my 10-year-old, who loves it as we'll. The prose is thrilling and touching in turn, and the illustrations complete the work.
