Benton began his career in a custom design t-shirt shop where he started designing his own characters. At the same time, Jim did illustrations and artwork for magazines and newspapers. People magazine named him "the most visible cartoonist in America" .
Benton also created greeting cards and worked in the magazine and publishing industry. In 1998, his SpyDogs characters became an animated series, The Secret Files of the Spy Dogs, that aired on Fox Kids. Licensing his own creations brought them widespread attention on products, such as It's Happy Bunny, The Misters, Just Jimmy and more.
Benton currently lives in Michigan, where he operates out of his own studio.
The Dear Dumb Diary books 1-10 are intensely comical! Follow Jamie Kelly on her funny adventures through middle school. Through the ups, downs, and all-arounds, she has lots of fun with her BFF, Isabella, and her tubby beagle, Stinker. Even though Jim Benton may not be a middle-school girl, he did a great job with these books! I read the whole series in about a week; they were HILARIOUS! I recommend this series for ages 8-12.
AMERICAN GIRLS IS EXCELLENT BUT I'M ONLY FIVE CHAPTERS IN. THE DEAR DUMB DIARY SERIES IS AMUSING, BUT I ONLY STARTED IT TO SCREEN IT SO I CAN CONVINCINGLY ARGUE WITH IDIOTS THAT Y, IT'S SUITABLE FOR AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY.
these books were so funny!! and i really felt that sometimes i could relate to a situation or a feeling that Jamie Kelly also felt some of the feelings that she felt as well
I read these books when I was a kid, and maybe this is just because I was too suggestible, but I kind of started hating popular blonde girls at school. (I got over it eventually, lol.) Angelina gives Jamie no reason to be so spiteful. There's lots of other children's books that don't encourage this kind of unhealthy social competition.
That said, I'm grateful that it also encouraged me to keep a diary of my own. It helped me through lots of tough things growing up, and is a habit I have carried into adulthood.
