A great holiday book about a scarecrow that comes up with a way to scare those pesky crows from their devious plans of partying on his crops on Halloween.

I remember buying this sucker at a Book Fair one year at the beginning of my teaching career (maybe my very first year?) and I think it's the cutest thing. I loved reading it to my students every year (and clearly they enjoyed it to, given how "well-loved" it looks). Now I get to read it to my own children every October. :)

Jeb the Scarecrow's patch is going to be full of crows for the crows halloween party! Desperate to save his pumpkins, he turns some into jack-o-lanterns to scare the birds away. Too texty for storytime, but kinda charming for the holiday

This is a fun (though weird) book to explain/ show a reason for? jack-o-lanters.

(Like... aren't a lot of scarecrows depicted in literature as having a jack-o-lantern as a head? It just seems really strange to have a scarecrow carving pumpkins.)

It’s kinda cute, but let’s face it, only super rich weirdos would buy Jack-o-lanterns.

Jeb Scarecrow takes pride in his pumpkin patch. He spends his days guarding it from thieving crows. He plans on selling the pumpkins to make some money. But one night at dinner, his mother tells him that his pumpkin patch has been chosen by the crows to hold their annual harvest celebration. Jeb vows to keep his pumpkins safe from the the crows. He comes up with a plan and his parents agree to help. While his parents keep the crows out of the pumpkin patch all day long, Jeb is busy in the patch under cover of disguises on the pumpkins themselves. Finally all is ready. When the crows return to the patch later that night, bringing along their friends, they find that the patch is protected by monsters! Lots of them! They fly away in fright never to return. And Jeb immediately begins to sell his "monsters" to people driving by. His monsters? Jack-O-Lanterns!

Jeb is a kid scarecrow who loves the patch and his scarecrow family, but the neighborhood crows love his pumpkin patch even more! Grampy Crow and his Crow Clan (NOT including Sheryl Crow, who in real life is too busy showing off HER "pumpkins" on videos for MTV, which is sad I know.) are awaiting the signal to attack the pumpkins with a Twelve-O-Clock HAW! So Jeb has to "patch things up" real fast to preserve (Bad choice of words) his pumpkins for posterity, and human families across the state. Light up them Jack-o-Lanterns and enjoy this one!

Poor Jeb...his pumpkin patch is about to be under siege. Those darn crows are so much trouble. Thankfully, Jeb is able to come up with a plan.

Not only is this a fun little read, but it teaches kids to think creatively because there is a solution to every problem.

The little boy scarecrow was easy for my LO to relate to and very animated, and the illustrations are vibrant and fun. He liked this one and looked over the pictures for awhile afterward but he didn't want me to read it again.
