I'll Give It My All...Tomorrow #3
I'll Give It My All...Tomorrow, Vol. 3
Life begins at 40, whether you're ready for it or not.
This is the story of a forty-year-old salaryman who quits his job to pursue his dream of becoming a manga artist--and the family that has to put up with him. While not terribly unhappy, Shizuo Oguro can't fight the feeling that something in his life just isn't right, so he walks away from his stable (yet boring) day job to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Unfortunately for his family, this journey also involves playing video games all day while his teenage daughter and elderly father support him. Will Shizuo succeed in creating a true manga masterpiece, or will he be just another dropout living a life of slack?
Shizuo’s in trouble. At least, his father is convinced he is. In his ongoing campaign to convince his layabout, forty-something progeny to finally get his act together, Shizuo’s father suggests a new maybe Shizuo should just treat manga as a hobby and do something else—anything else—so as to look like less of a reject to both his family and society at large. Can Shizuo’s burning desire to create manga triumph over his seemingly bottomless capacity for self-doubt and existential angst? Then again, maybe if Shizuo just comes up with a catchy pen name, everything will be golden and he’ll quickly find himself on the merry road to publication. Right?

Another good volume in this 5 part manga series. Looking forward to the next volume.

My favorite volume of this series thus far, in this volume Oguro-san pulls out all the stops and spends most of the pages fully dressed.
In this volume Oguro tries a couple new approaches influenced by his own experiences and beliefs, one of which really starts to influence other people in his life. At least, it causes his father to cry...with disbelief.
This series is very good, it has charm and is very funny. Even though most of the characters view Oguro as a bumbler who threw his life away when he quit his job to draw manga, and though he spends much of his time day-dreaming, partying or passed out at least he has taken steps to achieve his dream, rather than spend his days living just to survive. The title may be "I'll give it my all...tomorrow," but Shizou has already gotten ahead of most people and given it his all by going for his dream with every ounce of strength he can muster!

Beginning as an absurd but goofy story of an antihero in midlife crisis, “I’ll Give It My All…Tomorrow” evolved to a deeper tale of the creative process and family dynamics by volume two. Volume three carries on in that more interesting path. I don’t think this series has really taken off yet, but I have confidence in its potential to do so. The surprising point from which we were left hanging at the end certainly affirms my faith.

Why am I still reading this? Even while I somewhat relate to midlife crisis as a middle aged person, the overall story is not that compelling. At times, it's about as amusing a a newspaper comic.

I'm really starting to love these characters now! 4/5.

41 years old is young or not. But not so old. Shizuo(main character) is trying to be mangaka, and people around him. Author makes good stories like this, however his origin is this book I think. His mangas always give me some power to live :)

Aren't I cheating including a manga in my reading challenge? But bear with me.
This is probably the best manga I've read in a long while. The art is 'challenged' to borrow the words of Oguro's editor, and I was thinking it was going to be more of an in-your-face humour when I picked it up, but this is probably one of the most inspiring volume I've read in my life. I'm much younger than poor Oguro but I think this is a pain that most of us have to go through: the choice between survival and actually doing what we want.
Murakami's chapter is probably my favourite because it drives the point home. I'm gonna try look for the other volumes, but this one is defo a good one.
(Oh almost forgot! I'm wondering about Viz's decision to translate the title as 'I'll give it my all... Tomorrow' when the original title literally translates as 'I haven't done my best yet' or maybe something like 'You ain't seen nothing yet' but I guess that takes the humour out of it?)

It just wasn't for me. The protagonist was whiny and the art was shitty.
