Youthful mage Ulin Majere and his traveling companion head for the port city of Flotsam to identify a murder victim, only to find themselves caught up in a dangerous web of conspiracy, a clever gang of thieves, the Knights of Neraka, and a deadly red dragon that is terrorizing the local populace. Original.
A novel that is set in Dragonlance. In this book Ulin Majere and his girlfriend, Lucy, travel to Flotsam to identify a body who might be her father. She has not seen or heard from her father in ten years.
I have enjoyed many of this author's works in this universe but this one fell flat. There were scenes in the first half of the novel that were superfluous. In my opinion, the author did not have enough material for a full novel and with these extra scenes I never felt a connection with Lucy. I even had trouble connecting with Ulin who has been featured in other novels. I also did not like when tragedy hit as the buildup was a letdown. I did enjoy a couple of supporting characters and I wished that they had bigger roles. Also, the second half of the book was better esp. the climax.
All in all, this is not the best Dragonlance book. In fact, this is not the best Dragonlance book by this one author. If you want to read a Dragonlance book by this author may I strongly suggest The Clandestine Circle.
Had a difficult time getting into this one, the plot was very slow at the beginning, and I didn't really feel a connection with any of the characters. By the middle of the book things start to pick up, and I started to feel a bit more interested in what happened to the characters. But, I thought Kethril's actions leading up to the end of the book seemed quite out of character and somewhat unbelievable. All in all, I was kind of disappointed in this book, it had a lot of potential, but didn't really live up to my expectations. Not at all what I expected after the first book in this series (also by this author) was so good.
