Gertrude McFuzz is an ordinary bird with an ordinary tail. But when she sees Lolla-Lee-Lou has not one feather but two... well, that just won't do!!

Gertrude causes quite a huff and goes out to see her Uncle who happens to be a doctor. She pleads and pitches a fit how she wants a super awesome tail and while her Uncle tells her that birds like her just have one feather Gertrude McFuzz just goes right on being all spoiled brat about the situation.

Her uncle tells Gertrude of a pill-berry bush and off Gertrude goes. At first, Gertrude eats just one pill-berry and then two and then three. She just has to have more feathers than Lolla-Lee-Lou, but after she eats the whole bush... well, let's just say Gertrude McFuzz learned a lesson. Birds like her aren't meant to have feathers like that.... It kinda makes them too heavy to fly!! And after having to pull all the new feathers out, Gertrude realizes that her uncle was right all along.

Greta's Thoughts
I honestly couldn't stop thinking of breast implants while reading this story. I watch a lot of Bravo and am amazed how many teens in Orange County and Beverly Hills get implants at such a young age. I mean... they're still growing!! What's the rush?!! But they rush out and have to get their big knockers and it seems like when they turn 30 they want an even bigger pair but at 40 something it's time to get rid of those puppies (at least this is what I've been taught on The Real Housewives of Orange County). That is pretty much what I took away from Gertrude McFuzz. While you might feel pretty for a bit...you'll always meant to keep what you used to have.

Oh yeah... and jealousy and vanity too.... But I mainly thought of fake boobies. I wonder if that is what Dr. Suess was going for?

Gertrude McFuzz, tells a story, that daily far too many children can relate to. Gertude is an upset bird because his tail is too small, he feels he in adequate. Many children feel this way, that theyre not pretty enough, smart enough, or cool enough compared to their class mates. However, Gertrude, finds out in the end he was always perfect the way he was, having a bigger tail didn't make him any better, in fact it made him worse. When reading this book children will hopefully relate and realize they are special just being them, and should always just be happy with who they are.

This book was so cute! I love the lesson about loving who you are and not wanting to be like someone else but embracing who you are!

Genre: Picture Book

Age Level: Transitional; Grade 3 and up

World View: Middle class, White

Theme: Self Esteem and Body Image

Literary Elements:AA BB rhyme scheme, wonderful as always.

In the Classroom: Good to use for a poetry lesson, or one incorporating any sort of rhynming. Very fun read aloud, and the kids could create their own birds after reading this book using any art supplies they could find.

Illustrations: The reader sees Gertrude transform from a senile adolescent into a smarter sort of bird. The text works wonderfully with Gertrude's expressinos.

I have yet to come across a Dr. Seuss book that isn't enjoyable. 'Gertrude FcFuzz' is about a bird who has a measly one-feather tail. She eats a pill-berry and sprouts so many tails that she can no longer fly. This story teaches the reader about self-acceptance. It's just a fun story with a good message.

This book can be used to teach students about character development, which they can use in their writing.

Rhyming can be pointed out, while reading it.

This book can also be used to encourage students to be happy with themselves, and gain self-confidence.

I got this book for my mom to read me because I thought it was funny seeing her try to pronouns all the long nonsense words.
