Brief Review:
This book is for sure a science education book. The book starts out by showing and explaining al the types of rocks on earth. It then goes into the effects that weather has on the rocks from water to wind. The book also shows some of the uses of rocks before it starts to get into fossils. The end of the book has a section about showing kids how to find fossils and fun things to do with fossils.

Content area:
The content area this book could be used in is a science class. I believe this book could be used to introduce students to the Earth's crust and to fossils. I would then use the activities in the back to allow the kids to do some hands on activities with fossils. I would find some fossils and maybe cover them with mud let it dry to the fossils, then have the kids use tools to chip away the dirt to find the fossil. I would then have the kids look up what fossil they found and write a little about the fossil.

Comprehension questions:
Q: How does lava form into a solid rock?
A: Lava first has to rise to the surface of the crust, then a thick skin forms on the top as it is cooling, and finally it slowly cools all the way.

Q: List an events that cause rocks to get destroyed?
A: Water battering rocks on the coast lines. Rivers carving valleys in to the land. Glaciers grinding rocks to dust as they slide from mountains.

Student Wonders:
How old are fossils?
Where did all the rocks come from?
How many space rocks hit Earth?

The part of the book about rocks is mostly boring to me, but the part on minerals and fossils is interesting. I just prefer crystals because they look awesome. The book is full of facts and pictures so you can learn about what is in the Earth. If you like rocks and fossils, you will probably like this book too.

This was a great intro to fossils book for first readers (the preschooler loved it too). Just the right level of info along with great photos/illustrations.
