The comprehensive, exclusive guide to collecting ‘Games Workshop’s’ Lord of the Rings miniatures for epic battle gaming.
You may call me a tomboy but re-creating the epic, great battles in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (films) is both exciting and fills one with delight for they are so intensely captivating on screen. This brilliant book complete with a color map of Middle-earth is a must have for all those fans of the films, which were so successful namely due to Peter Jackson who brought Tolkien’s creation to life for us all to experience. Collecting the realistic miniature sculptures is extremely fun as you watch the Rohirim grow in number under the guidance of King Théoden, similarly to the great mass of Orcs and Uruk-hai who plan their attack on helms deep. This manual forms a complete and invaluable guide with colorfully illustrated pages that denote the essential rules, information and information to bring the battles of Middle-Earth to life upon your own tabletop. One is not restricted to buying expensive scenery and figures, for many pages explain how one can make your own out of readily available materials, hence you do not need much other than a bit of imagination to begin your own battle. This book solely covers the significant battles within the ‘Two Towers’ (film 2), and includes scenarios such as the Warg attack, the ambush in Ithilien, the Deeping wall & gateway, Helms Deep and Osgiliath and Isenguard.
Complete with some stunning photographs from the film, character descriptions and diagrams that clearly and straightforwardly explain how it works this book is essential for all those who wish to re-create those epic, unforgettable moments.
As an undeniably great fan of the Lord of the Rings films and aficionado of JRR Tolkien’s extensive works including this one, I am keen to explore more about Middle-Earth including those remarkable battles that remain etched within my mind for all-time. I do have a habit of collecting things and if related to either Tolkien or the fantastic films that depicted his vision so astutely, then it is hardly a surprise to many that ‘The Lord of the Rings’ strategy battle game is on the list. Helms Deep has to be the most memorable battle in all the three films, as I found it quite stirring to watch and which displayed the courage and bravery of those within the fellowship & others (i.e. King Théoden and the Elves) that is so poignant and a momentous part I think. I would greatly recommend this book, even to collectors of LOTR merchandise & books.
I'm still working my way through Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game books as I get ready to either play the game or paint miniatures and create Lord of the Rings dioramas. I thought I'd do a brief review of this book so people who buy it know what they're getting.
The main focus is the rules for the game which take up about half of the book. This rulebook came out around the time of Two Towers and was meant to update the original rules released for the Fellowship of the Ring. The rules laid out here were later updated by Return of the King. I can't possibly summarize all of the updates and improvements compared to the Fellowship of the Ring version of the game but Two Towers added an emphasis on siege and larger scale battles because The Two Towers is mostly a movie of large battles. There are quite a few new rules and the information you need to use a lot of the Two Towers releases (like Rohan and Uruk Hai).
After that, there are ten scenarios mostly based on the events of Two Towers. I found some of these scenarios very intriguing and relatively easy to play as far as the miniatures needed. Most of the them involve Rohan or Saruman so there isn't a heavy emphasis on the Fellowship like the previous rulebook. Some like the Helm's Deep scenarios would require some serious time and energy put into terrain to really capture the battle from the books/movies. Either way, the scenarios were good and made purchasing this worth it because I don't plan on using the outdated rules in my games.
The rest of the book focuses on the hobby side of things. Tips for painting and a little bit of information on making terrain. The painting tips are not bad even with this book's age though I think they are most helpful to beginning to intermediate painters. The hobby section is also very inspiring and makes you want to try and build terrain even if the information they provide is a bit too basic to make anything all that great. The pictures of Helm Deep really make you want to try and build your own scenery even if it would take a ton of time and space to pull it off.
Overall, this is a visually stunning book even after all of these years and it does its job of educating you about this game and making you want to play. I had fun reading it and if you're interested in this niche topic, it is easy to pick up copies of the old rulebooks to learn more about the game and see if you want to play or paint these minis.
