Groups sightes into regions of the North Island and provides brief overview, highlights of each, and then gives a list of recommended places to visit, eat, and stay. I particularly appreciate when the author/editor admits that a town doesn't have a whole lot going for it as a destination in and of itself, but suggests why you might want to pop in as a stop on a roadtrip, which is what I'll be doing with my husband and kids next month. Helpful. (I read the kindle edition so I could easily highlight it and have quick access on the go.)

Lonely Planet is still my favorite guide book. I wish they updated more often but the information is reliable and thorough. Also, some Lonely Editors do not recommend anything above the backpacker's budget but this edition gave a range of options.

Lonely Planet is great. Readable descriptions of food, transport, accommodations, culture, and other essentials for travelers. Don't miss the invaluable section on Kiwi history and culture at the end.

I thought Auckland, Hobbittown and Hamilton Gardens wrapped it up for the North Island. I was wrong! So many more things to see and do.
