Picture-book author and artist Jim Arnosky, who has created many works of natural history for young people, turns to the cervine wildlife of North America in this third entry in his "All About..." series. With simple text and beautiful watercolor illustrations he examines the different kinds of cervidae species to be found on the continent, before focusing on the most common - the white-tailed deer. He looks at their anatomy, how they raise their young, and what they eat...

Like its predecessors, All About Deer is an engaging work of non-fiction for picture-book readers, pairing an informative text and lovely visuals. I appreciated the author's point that deer can flourish in any small bit of woodland, even if surrounded by development. As it happens, there is a deer family that lives in the little wooded area around a stream near my house in suburbia, and I see them most days, when I walk down to the area. This was an enjoyable book, although I do wish (as I did with the others) that it had included a list of further resources for the child reader. Recommended to young animal lovers and naturalists.

A wonderful children's guide to learning all about deer. I read this book to my boys so many times, and once they could read on their own they continued to enjoy reading it. Definitely a keeper!

Another fantastic "All About" book from Jim Arnosky.

My five-year-old son couldn't get over the adorableness of the fawns in this book. He wasn't excited about it on page one, but by the end, he was asking to go back and see certain pages.

Jim Arnosky creates magic with many of his illustrations of animals, and this is one of his magical books.

My opinion on these books is all pretty much the same. The text is really nothing special. Simple and yet informational but entirely readable. The meat of the text is in the illustration captions which contain a lot of factual information. The illustrations by wildlife illustrator Jim Arnosky however are astounding and he includes illustrations of all six species found in North America, each labeled as to species, but uses the White-Tailed Deer for example purposes due to its being the most common. A gorgeous book to look at and you really can't go wrong introducing your child to Arnosky's illustration.

All About Deer by Jim Arnosky
This audio book I found interesting as we do have deer at my mother's property on the island.
Always amazed me to figure out how they knew when it was hunting season and they would vanish.
Other works by the author are also highlighted. Very educational about the different types of the deer. I had heard the names but didn't realize they were in the same family.
So much information about the deer and how they survive. My favorite part is the shape of the feet-heart imprints are left behind.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This book is a very nice introduction to the life cycle, habits, and characteristics of deer in the Americas, illustrated in Arnosky's detailed and realistic watercolors. Arnosky's "All about..." series is excellent for the thirsty naturalist who soaks up information about the world. Nature books of this kind tend to proliferate and may not often be reread, so unless your reader has a particular interest in the animal, this may make a better public library read than a permanent addition to your library.

Summary: All About Deer details deer anatomy and the daily deer life. The reader will receive close ups and views from the inside of deer. The text follows deer from the beginning to the end of their life cycle.

Review: Deer may not be the most exciting animals, but to new learners who see these animals in their yards, they can be fascinating. Because the text is so relevant to them and so accessible, it is a great resource for the young reader's classroom.

Uses:
1. Unit on animals
2. Independent exploration

This is an excellent overview of the deer family, but mostly focused on the white-tailed deer. There is a double-page spread which points out the other animals in the Cervidae family. The rest of the book explains what deer eat, how their antlers grow, how they raise fawns, and what preys on them. The paintings are realistic and beautifully executed. A great introduction for young primary students.

It took me a while to get Jim Arnosky. His texts aren't terribly compelling, and his art is solid and technical. But then I read this book and I realized what a tremendous task it must be to take a common animal like a deer and write a book that includes all the most important basic facts, but still has interesting new pieces too. This book is a success at providing a thorough overview of deer.

Love the, "All About..." series from Jim Arnosky. Of course, I am still in silent protest that the Crinkleroot series is not rereleased. :) Maybe someday. His illustrations are beautiful and each book is full of fascinating facts.
