Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
I was talking mad shit last volume, but this one drew me in big time. We're going full on snail apocalypse and I love it. Araki leans ALL the way in on his horror sensibilities for this arc, which turns into this really creative take on what is essentially a zombie apocalypse. The body horror is fantastically grotesque and unique. By the time Jolyne catches up with Versace, he's busting out some super fun uses for Underworld.
But that's not all! We also finally get some backstory on Pucci and Weather Report, which was superb. It's this tragic scenario where almost everybody is acting with good intentions and trying to make the best of a bad situation, only for things to go wrong at every turn. It makes sense Pucci and Weather would come out hating each other, but that was the result everybody wanted to prevent. Pucci's life was just a string of bad luck, unfortunate coincidences, and the best intentions bearing horrible results. It makes sense that he would turn to religion, particularly Dio, in hopes of making sense out of a life that has thus far played out like a cruel joke.
And that's STILL not all! We get a brutal fight with Pucci facing down Weather and Annasui. Pucci finally feels threatening and on top of his shit. And I'm so much more interested in this character now that I know how he has become the person he is today.
The explanation for how all this snail stuff works is the only sour point. I get the underlying concept of subliminal messages, but the way it's implemented here is far beyond how far I can suspend my disbelief. And it falls apart under the most basic scrutiny (if the snails are illusions, how did they cause the ceiling to collapse? How does everyone happen to come to the same conclusion that these snails transform people upon contact?). But I don't even mind that much because the snailpocalypse has been so damn fun on its own.
Lastly, I want to say that the art for this volume has been great stuff. These past couple volumes, we've finally gotten the gorgeous coastal Florida setting I was dying to see from within the stone walls of Green Dolphin Prison. But Araki and the color team have really outdone themselves this time. Between the vibrant rainbows, glaring sun, and charming Orlando streets, this volume was consistently a pleasure to look at. At least, in the panels where people aren't turning into snails or bleeding all over the place.
This might be the best volume in Stone Ocean. With one exception, everything this volume went for succeeds with flying colors.
Heavy Weather part 3 (ch 721): That chance or perhaps fated meeting between Dio and Pucci gives me life. Pucci's background story is very interesting to say the least.
Heavy Weather part 4 (ch 722) was insane: The Romeo and Juliet, the incest, the KKK, the confusion regarding what the KKK knew about Weather like who married the black man? Wes's adoptive mother??? His biological mother??? How come Pucci wasn't harassed though...
Heavy Weather part 5 (ch 723): This backstory is so insane for so many reasons. It's really just tragic. There's also this sense that it's building up the arrow lore particularly why stand users are drawn to each other.
Heavy Weather part 6 (ch 724): I hate snails so much, but Jolyne's so cool so I don't totally hate this arc.
Heavy Weather part 7 (ch 725): I am Anasui.
Heavy Weather part 8 (ch 726): Versace palpating Emporio to locate the disk and figure out his stand is so creepy honestly. There's also something about Jolyne apologizing to him for how she used him that just makes me feel so soft for the both of them. Like Emporio was just dragged into this mess, and Jolyne feels guilty about it. Which I guess, really is the case.
Heavy Weather part 9 (ch 727): I was waiting so long for this reunion. Anasui's so funny becuase of his one-track mind and cluelessness, and temper.
Heavy Weather part 10 (ch 728): What's going awn ?! The snails and subliminal messages are so crazy I almost could not suspend my disbelief for them !! I am also so intrigued by Versace's, Emporio's, and Pucci's stands since they are like materializing memories.
Heavy Weather part 11 (ch 729) was such a cool chapter! I love seeing Weather Report and Anasui together, and now to have Pucci thrown into that mix? I love what Weather did with his blood, and what Pucci did with Anasui, and Anasui's submission and overall dumbassery.

I'm rating it within the context of manga, and this is easily the best arc of Stone Ocean so far. Very good villain character development and high stakes for the entire cast. Araki really leans into that idea of destiny and people naturally gravitating towards each other within the universe
This volume had the perfect balance of action and story!
WEATHER REPORT MY BELOVED… i loved reading about his backstory and the travesty that it was. it was heartbreaking and he deserves the world. i wholeheartedly believe it should have been him that killed his brother, i truly so do. that fight was so so good tho. this volume was excellent
yeah this is fucking peak. getting weather reports actually backstory and memories is KINDA insane… a .. a certain … uh Group… shows up and when i tell you my jaw DROPPED. BUT. YEAH. ITS SO GOOD. ITS WACKY FUCKED AND I NEED PUCCI GONE (but also this has kinda made him my fav jojo villian so far)
All that backstory...really turns the tables. I really like Dio's role in part 6, he is full of wonders (quite literally). (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤ One of the best Volumes of this part...
