Great visual book with pictures of the objects to help the child identify the object with the word. Each set of pages has 2 sensory pictures to encourage touching too (furry teddy bear, squishy sponge, dimpled orange, etc)... This has always been a favorite of the grandkids as they love looking at the pictures and feeling the different textures.

This fun filled early children's picture book is a board book full of objects and words through familiar textures. I enjoyed the colors and the familiar pictures throughout the pages applicable to the preschool classroom I am currently teaching in for practicum. This book would be used as a great asset to use in a preschool classroom. This book encourages children to develop vocabulary and early literacy use. This book is appropriate for ages 3-4.

These kind of picture dictionaries are always boring for me to read as an adult, but for a toddler who is still acquiring language it is full of fun things to see and learn. This one has an added bonus of including things for them to touch and feel. I wish there was some storyline to go with it.

DK vocabulary books also come in a style where some pictures have textured surfaces inset in the pages. This makes the book more enjoyable for young babies because they naturally use their tactile senses to interact with the natural world. While babies do like these books, they are oppressively dull for grownups to read and, as I discussed in My First Word Board Book, they aren't very effective in helping babies build vocabulary.
