I wasn’t sure about this book when I first started reading it. However, once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. Brant and Samilla were placed on a case together. He was FBI, and she was DEA. This story had so many twists! It’s a “who done it” type of story, with romance along the way. The end was a shocker for me. I never guessed who the culprit was! Very well written Maureen Smith!! 🔥❤️
Definitely different from my normal reads but, I enjoyed it. Engaging storyline. Dynamic characters. Steamy romance. Very suspenseful mystery - did not expect the ending!
Honestly Smith can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. She's definitely become my favorite author. Its to the point where if she releases a new book I will stop what I'm reading to start hers. This is one of her older works that I haven't read but it was a great story line. I loved Samille's tough girl feminist character! She is definitely one of my favorites.
This author writes great legal and law enforcement characters. I love Samille and Brant immediately. This was a great romantic mystery. The story was layered and it moved at a great pace. I was excited once I started it and couldn’t put it down.
Samille and Brant both experienced great tragedy early in their lives; his lost his twin to gun violence and her parents by a drunk driver and until they met each other they were just dealing with their deaths but not moving past it. The conversation Brant had with his father was well written and so heartfelt. He told his son to let go, love, live, and be happy. Amanda was the person that was there to let Samille know it’s good fall in 💕 and create a life with AGENT Kincade.
Bought the ebook and enjoy rereading my favorite parts.

Maureen Smith crafts quite an ENGAGING romantic suspense...she also provides very descriptive/informative details into the role of the DEA diversions investigators, all while keeping you entertained....the characters are MEMORABLE...the secondary characters aid in adding depth to the main characters, Samille and Brant...I enjoy the close-knit family ties displayed throughout...the INTENSE instant attraction and the verbal sparring between Samille and Brant keeps me turning the pages...and their back and forth antics as Samille and Brant make EVERY attempt to fight their growing attraction only serves add more INTRIGUE....Mrs. Smith will keep you on the edge of your seat as Samille and Brant start to unveil the many secrets surrounding this CHILLING and mysterious criminal investigation...A Heartbeat Away is definitely a GEM in the romantic suspense genre...at times it seems a bit too long, but it's still a worthwhile read.
Maureen Smith has written an intelligent and well-developed suspense plot. She gives us a fabulous hero (Brant) who falls for a great heroine (Samille). Although Brant is definitely an alpha, he's not an obnoxious, borderline abusive one. (Thank you, Ms. Smith!) Samille is feisty without being over the top. Even better, she's vulnerable without being an annoying caricature of woman who allows an alpha male to bully her while finding it romantic. I sooo hate those heroines! This is a great read with a romantic falling in love. It's not all about lust. I loved that the reader is shown how the two get to know each other. Heck, I fell for Brandt before the heroine did. Worth reading again.
I'm so glad that this book was finally re-released for Kindle. I loved it! I always enjoy Maureen Smith's romantic suspense novels, and she didn't disappoint with this one. As usual, I had no idea who the killer was and spent much of the book side-eyeing errybody! The interesting cast of characters made it difficult to guess who the perpetrator was.
Samille and Brant were a great couple and I really enjoyed their story. I live in the DMV, so it was nice to see so many familiar locales referenced.
Anxiously awaiting the re-release of Ghosts of Fire...
