This is a review of the second read of Bought and Paid For.
Whoops! I gave this book 5 stars after the first read in 2011 and only 3 stars after the second in 2014. I'm not sure what grabbed me about it back then, but there really wasn't anything all that special here. A lot of the M/M romance I read in early 2011 rated really high for me because it was all new and I COULD. NOT. GET. ENOUGH.
But this was still a nice, short story about 2 nice men given a second chance at love, so I can recommend it.

Dr. Parker Easton has been nominated to enter the bachelor auction for the hospital fundraising event and he is not happy about it. For one he has not gone on a date in two years and he has no motivation to be on the auction block for a bunch of fawning women to ogle.
When he hears the terms by which he was nominated he has no choice but to concede. Things are not as cut and dry as his secretary makes it out to be, as two things happens:
The bidding went further than expected.
The wining bidder is not someone Parker expected to see or wants to see again.
A delightful read from Ms. Miles’ and it just hits the spot. With characters that you can’t help but empathise with and ultimately fall in love with, Ms. Miles has continued with her usual style of tossing young men who are battling against person or persons to ultimately get to their soul mate.
Most of the story is told in hindsight, from both the main protags point of view and it flows and flows well. BOUGHT AND PAID FOR is filled with enough smut to tempt a saint and it is bloody hot, there was no beating about the bush with these two when they had to get their groove on.
The storyline is good, it’s catchy and as much as Ms. Miles only gave us a short story – I can easily see Parker and his man being revisited at a later date. The support cast are in you face and funny with it as well – I like them alot.
Ms. Miles has come out to play with BOUGHT AND PAID FOR and I for one am having fun.

2.5 stars I really should've prepared because I KNEW this is a gay romance/erotica, where usually there is a lot of sex more than the romance building. It should've lower my expectation somehow. While I like the idea of "two people with history", the amount of love making turns me off. As well as the overused of terms of endearment (yes, there CAN be an overused of the word "baby", believe me!), the overused of "love you", AND too much talking during the sex scene. Yes, I am not in favor of that, it ruins the mood for me. Oh well, at least I get a giggle over the auction scene and thank GOD, this only less than 50 pages ...

Short and Sweet, maybe a touch too sweet.
Parker, a very dedicated Doctor, is still not over his faithless lover Deacon, who cheated on him 2 years ago.
But not all was as it seemed and there may be hope yet, if Parker will listen to Deacon.

3.5 rating A short story about lovers to enemies to lovers. Both men got their hearts broken when Deacon had to give up his boyfriend Parker because his father threatened to ruin Parker. Once Deacon's dad died, could he win back Parkers love?

August 3, 2009Bought and Paid For is, as the title suggests, a bit of Cinderfella story mixed with Romeo and Jules. Deacon and Parker were in love, both young, successful and happy, Deacon an art dealer and Parker a young promising oncologist. True, their life was not perfect, Parker worked long hours, but Deacon loved him so much that was always ready to comfort and wait for him. Then Deacon's father, a Senator, put a veto on this relationship, it was unacceptable for his son to be gay, and he swore to destroy every man in Deacon's life. Here maybe is the only side that I didn't like so much about Deacon, he had not the strength to oppose to his father, but, as the story was planned, it was also maybe the only good thing to do. Deacon staged a fake cheating and obviously Parker left him with a broken heart, but still with his beloved work as a doctor.
Two years later Deacon's father is dead, and without being missed by his son or his employees, and Deacon is free to try to conquer Parker again. A charity bachelor action is a good chance and now Deacon has also the money to be sure that he will be the higher bidder. From that moment on, the story is pretty much a sweet romance, with the revelation that, despite two years apart, both men are still deeply in love.
Both Deacon than Parker are apparently strong men, tall and handsome, but they are also easily wounded when feelings are involved. Basically they are two romantic hearts, they believe in forever and only love and being forced to be apart was almost their death, at least from a emotional point of view. They are like those animals that bound only one time in their life and when one of the mate dies, the other soon follows him.
The author has the chance to push a lot on the angst button, but she chooses to dose it; with Parker's job it would have been easy to arise sympathy for him, and instead she only gave a glimpse on it when serves her to describe how caring Deacon was for his lover. Other than that, more than on the angst button, she chooses to push on the emotional one. Deacon's choice how to use his inherited money, his actions towards Parker, but also Parker's easy conquest, due to his love for Deacon, are all thought to make the reader smile and dream, more than make him cry.

Not much to say on this one. It was short, but I read it even more quickly because by the middle I found myself skimming more than not. The whole plot, explanation, and remorse was doled out in the first three pages by both partners - only as personal reflections because they hadn't had anything to do with each other for two years.
The reasoning for the separation could have made more sense if we were given a first-hand account of some of the 'evil father's' machinations, but we weren't so it kind of seemed shoddy. Characters came up for no seeming reason and disappeared for the same.
And above all, there was just too much talk. I can't even begin to say how LITTLE people say in real life, and only the most annoying ones [like me:] repeat ourselves in different ways to get the point across. Not EVERY chara, and certainly even the most loving characters wouldn't grovel and apologize so much. It just kind of irritated me a little...

This was a great redemption / second chance story and I really enjoyed reading it. I enjoy AKM Miles' books because her characters are always driven by love and this one was no exception.
I really liked Parker and Deacon and loved the way that they were brought together (again) after Deacon buys Parker at a bachelor auction held to raise money for the hospital where Parker (a doctor) works.
Deacon went to such desperate measures to get some time alone with Parker to explain something he had done in the past to break their relationship, and to ask for a second chance.
Secondary characters had brief, but important roles in the tale and I found myself liking them and taking an interest in them also.
I had a huge smile on my face by the end of the story!

It was OK.
I did finish the story, but it was short and very sweet. Overly so for my taste.
A shame, because with some more realistic dialogue, this was a good story. The basic premise of buying a person's time at a charity auction has been done to death a bit, but it was well handled here. I could see the doctor selling his date to raise funds for a new cancer wing, only to be reunited with his cheating ex. It got problematic once the two men met though, and that was due to the dialogue and rather gooey (sickly sweet) behaviour.
Having a man say “Oh, my God, my baby. I love you,” is bad enough (I wouldn't want that kind of declaration myself, tbh); but for me at least, when it's to another man it's particularly cringeworthy.

This short story - as good as it was - could have benefited from being either a lot longer or a bit shorter. There were two porny flashbacks which were unnecessary and which kind of took away from the emotion and intimacy of the actual reunion because we'd seen it already. Take these out and the story would have benefited.
On the other hand, if this was a novella, we could have kept the flashbacks but had a bit more build up to the reunion which would have given a 'hard fought for' feeling to the scenes were they'd come together again.
Either way, I loved the premise of this story and the writing was great. I liked both the MCs and was rooting for them to get back together.

Parker is an oncologist who is roped into a bachelor auction because someone offered to pay minimum $10K for him. Turns out to be $25K and its none other than his ex from two years ago who cheated on him. Meanwhile you find out that there were extenuating circumstances and the ex has loved him always (and vice versa) and is now free to be with him again but figures the only way Parker would agree is to "buy" him for the evening. I liked the idea but the flashback didn't work so well, but on the whole I enjoyed it.

Parker and deacon had been together years ago. But due to deacon father being ruthless heartless senator he blackmailed his son with threats. So he ended his relationship with parker that was 2 years ago. Now deacons back with an plan to get Parker back. Due to certain things that has happened if these things didnt happen would deacon step up. I guess we never know. I guess better things left unknown. Im just glad things turned around for them

This novella has a great premise and nice characters. I wish it had been longer because Parker believed and forgave Deacon a bit too easily/quickly.

I don't usually read shorts but I wanted to try something by AKM Miles. I think it could be good but I haven't read enough of it yet to give an opinion.

I totally loved it. Loved both Parker and Deacon, loved the story, loved the way the author writes. There was just one tiny disappointment, it was way too short! But it's a great read.
