This is the review of my 7 year old daughter.

This story is about Stephanie the Starfish Fairy and two other fairies. Stephanie gets captured and the other two fairies have to find both Spike the Starfish and Stephanie.

I liked the when Stephanie got captured by the goblins because it was fun to read about that part. I really like these fairy stories because there are so many different kinds of fairies and that they have to leave fairyland for different reasons.

You should read this book because they are fun stories and it is helping me get better at reading and can help you too if you are young.

(Dad's Notes)

These are ideally suited for Grade 2's who are reading at the suggested level. My daughter is devouring these stories and I keep finding her reading when she gets the chance. Young girls who love fairies, animals and fun magic will enjoy these stories.

I didn’t like this book as much as the rest of the ones in the series because it kinda just felt like one long scene to me. I’m still really enjoying the series as a whole and am excited to finish.

This was surprisingly good! I was a little iffy about it in the beginning, but I ended up really enjoying this book.

Before I get into this book specifically, I wanted to address a few things about the series overall, since this is the first book that I read from it. I always love it when a new series is somehow able to connect to a previous book or series - having the Ocean fairies be Shannon’s helpers helps this series bring something new to the table, and this is definitely heightened by the girls being back at Kirsty’s gran’s place because obviously that's where they met Shannon for the first time. I also think that the magic item being scattered pieces of a bigger item is very interesting new concept and the fact they were able to add something fresh to yet another animal-themed series was quite impressive. The girls’ needing to find the fairy animals in order to find the pieces of the shell was like having them search for both a lock and its key.

Let’s start off with Stephanie herself. I want to love her design so badly, but her pants are horrendous and that thick-ass belt is not helping at all. Other than her cute little vest, this is an outfit my mom would wear to work and that just should not be the vibe of Rainbow Magic fairy. I do like her colour scheme though - coral and turquoise have always been a popular combo, especially around the time that this was published. I also liked her bob; I think I would’ve hated it if the cut was straight, so I liked that it was more jagged.
As a fairy, she’s okay. She was barely in her own book, which is rare is this universe, and I have yet to decide if that’s something I liked or not. I was definitely judging her for getting caught in a net by the goblins because I would be embarrassed if that were me, I could never show my face around Fairyland again. However, I did find her to be very clever like when she used the constellations to tell the girls where she thinks Spike is; or how she kept making random bursts of pink sparkles appear to trick the goblins - incredibly funny scene by the way, it was like watching a game of whack-a-mole take place.
Bonus points for her being up there in terms of dramatic fairy entrances. (I knew that shooting star had to be her!)

I know I complained about Stephanie being captured, but there were some positives! It’s been a while since one of the fairies was incapacitated, therefore leaving the girls to their own devices, so there was a lot of opportunity for interesting storytelling there, like the number of obstacles the girls kept running into. They found Spike, but couldn’t understand him without Stephanie there to translate. They thought about going to Fairyland for help, but had to take a risk and leave Spike and the piece of the shell they found behind because they couldn’t take Spike without Stephanie.

The biggest upside to Stephanie being captured was SHANNON!!! Stephanie girl I’m so sorry, but Shannon is one of my favourite fairies, I love everything about her, she’s such an icon. The second that Rachel and Kirsty came to her for help, she had a plan ready to go - no other fairy has ever been as take-charge and efficient as her! Also, I loved Shannon’s plan to rescue Stephanie - it was both complex and funny, I did not realize that Shannon had it in her to be an actual threat (I’m putting her right below Paige the Christmas Play Fairy on my list of fairies that should never get their hands on a gun).

My favourite scenes/quotes:
-“She is the starfish fairy, I suppose,” Kirsty thought out loud. “Maybe she always shines like a star?” - the way Kirsty connects the dots is hilarious to me specifically
-“The mussels in the pool began opening and closing their own shells as if they were applauding. Spike seemed to dance a little jig of joy on Kirsty’s hand.” - them celebrating and cheering the girls on is such a cute detail
-“The girls tucked Spike and the golden piece of conch into a group of anemones. They were the exact same shade of pink as Spike, and their waving fronds closed around him. It seemed like they knew they had to keep him and the shell out of sight.” - I like how all these different sea creatures are described, it really gives them a life of their own.
-Shannon frowned. “I’ve certainly never seen them at night before,” she replied, before flying up to the biggest puffin. “Guys, you’re supposed to be asleep now, not wandering around on the beach!” - I also loved this scene because Shannon just scolds the puffins as if Jack Frost hasn’t thrown the entire ecosystem off-balance.
-“Help! It’s a bird monster!” one of them yelped, trying to dodge a puffin who was nipping at his ankle. - lols, puffins are just a smaller version of Canadian geese (aka demonic snow chickens)
-But moments later, they came on a whole horde of crabs who jabbed at the goblins’ legs with their sharp pincers. “Ow! Ow! Ow! What’s going on?” the goblins cried in terror. “The beach is full of monsters!” - they’re not exactly wrong about the beach being filled with monsters
-Shannon had asked the ocean snails and sea sponges to make the rocks around this pool extra slippery. - the beach/sea version of slipping on a banana peel
-“Hi there, having fun?” Rachel asked sweetly as she and Kirsty hovered in midair above their heads. - menace behaviour from Rachel

Details that I want to point out (that are mostly positive):
-I was so shocked when I saw the South Pole on the map, I was like, okay hold now even I have my limits.
-We rarely get books set during the nighttime, so that was a nice change of pace!
-I know it was probably really cold on the beach at night, but there was just no excuse for those awful outfits.
-Kirsty’s Gran being one of those grandmas who’s a part of a million different clubs and always organizing community events absolutely tracks.
-Is it unrealistic to see a violin constellation? Yes. Am I a sucker for previous fairy friends being mentioned? Also yes. (I do think them seeing a constellation of Ruby’s shoe is more believable, but that’s just me.)
-Personally, I think Jack Frost made some great points about why the beach sucks, but messing with a whole ass ecosystem is still fucked up.
-The goblins being Jack Frost’s true worst enemy from the beginning this time around is probably such a new low for him.
-Wait, if she’s an ocean fairy, why would wet wings be an issue? This has never been a thing before, I swear!
-The goblins being dressed in all black killed me because it’s dark out and they’re green.
-Rachel saying “good for her” once they realized what Stephanie was doing to trick the goblins made me laugh more than it should’ve.
-Rachel being a cutie cuz she’s never seen a puffin before.

Daisy Meadows and her fairies are my childhood. I collected so many in my youth, knowing all the fairies and their importance, and sticking with the two special girls who go to be a part of the magic.
Years ago I had to give my beautiful collection away, now still part of my childhood school where little girls are picking their favourite fairies and playing pretend. It's fun to hear stories from my old teachers telling me how over the years so many students have grabbed these books and fallen in love with the tales of two girls, Jack Frost and the fabulous glittering magic that is the fairies.
On Christmas last year, my sister surprised me with a boxset of these books, but cause you cannot collect these darlings as easily anymore. I was over the moon!
If anyone has a little one who needs a little magic in their life, wants to read and needs a big creation to be hooked on...it is Daisy Meadows!

They've done a good job with this series. This is the fifth book in the ocean fairies series, and it's nice to see that they've switched up the plot a bit to keep it fresh. While one part of this quest is fairly simple, everything else is more complicated than usual. A good change of pace, and the pictures of the camouflaged goblins are great.

I really liked this book because it had Shannon when the book wasn't called Shannon the ocean fairy, but Stephanie the Starfish Fairy, because I like Shannon more than Stephanie.

I have been reading "Daisy Meadows's" books since I was a wee little squirt and was hoping for one thing when I was little: to have her use my name as a fairy. So I waited for it till I was a teen and didn't read them anymore. Then I discovered that there was-finally-a Stephanie fairy. I thought-here was my time to shine! After reading 80+ of her books I was going to get my change. Move out Sunny, Sky, Storm, Scarlet, SophiE, Sienna, Sarah, Saskia (Serena), Samantha, Sadie, SophiA, Summer, Stella, Shannon, Selena, HERE COMES STEPHANIE!! Then I read the book. So what I finished it in 20min but Stephanie was hardly in there whatsoever. I waited for years for a book that would star (no pun intended) a fairy with my name. But NOPE. She was stuck in a net for half of the book and Shannon has to come and save the day. Leaving about 3 pages and minimal space for the actual title character. I must ask: Why did I want a Stephanie book so bad? Is it like all the die-hard Harry Potter fans want JK Rowling to write another book just so they can cherish the memories that they had? Did I just want a book by the four women to be named after myself so I could have something to hold on to so that when I grow old I'll see something that I loved that the author had put my name on it? So I can give it to my kids and say that "Daisy Meadows" heard my unheard cry out to her to put my name to a fairy? Now I guess I can say that I never have to check at the library in the same place where the Rainbow Magic books have always been to see if my name popped up. This almost seems like I am ending my childhood with the end of the book.

PS: The one thing that they got right is that Stephanie the Starfish Fairy has red hair like me...so maybe "Daisy Meadows" did hear my cry after all!

This is the fifth book of seven in the Rainbow Magic Ocean Fairies series by the group of authors who go by the pseudonym Daisy Meadows. While the stories are basically the same and follow a simple formula, they are entertaining for young girls who are starting to read chapter books and I love that our oldest is just ripping through them. We both read the books separately and talk about what happens. I'm not a huge fan of them, but each story only takes about 5-10 minutes to read. And these stories feature sea creatures, so I enjoyed this book slightly more than some of the others. Our oldest is starting to read them very quickly, too, and she ended up finishing four of these stories in one day.

I loved this story because 2 girls were at the beach at night because there was a party. The 2 girls asked Kristy gran if they could go to the tide pools. She said yes. SO they went and they saw a fairy named Stephanie the Starfish Fairy. She had lost her pet starfish Spike and the girls helped her find him. But there was a problem. The goblins had trapped Stephanie in a fishing net so Kristy and Rachel had to look by themselves. They found Spike and the magic conch shell piece that they were missing. Kristy and Rachel tried to go back to Fairyland with the 2 objects. They could not because Stephanie's magic is the only magic that could bring the 2 magic objects back. So they got Shannon to help and all the girls helped free Stephanie and bring the magic conch shell piece back to the conch shell to fix it. The End.

Kind of reading these books out of order but working with what we can get our hands on at the library. We have book two but accidentally grabbed this book out of the bag by mistake yesterday and started reading it before spotting the mistake.

My daughter is loving these ocean fairy books. This was a good book and she loved the way the girls worked with the fairies in the book to get the couch shell piece away from the goblins. Very good books if you have a girl who loves fairies.
