Marvin A. "Marv" Wolfman is an award-winning American comic book writer. He is best known for lengthy runs on The Tomb of Dracula, creating Blade for Marvel Comics, and The New Teen Titans for DC Comics.
It is funny that Marv Wolfman really made this series not about a cat and mouse game and brought the stories to life with scary things happening all the time. Some things bugged me: Castle Dracula was burned down, but all of a sudden it was completely there for Dracula to fill coffins with Transylvanian dirt to send to England (Huh?)
His eyes are supposed to be red, but sometimes they aren't. Makes me laugh. In the story where Van Helsing takes the Second Book of the Damned (or whatever the called it) in the helicopter, Drake is just not in the story anymore till the next issue.
The Werewolf-by-Night story crossover was kind of cool, but totally random at the same time. His Castle had a big hole in the wall that looked out at Castle Dracula (the one that burned down)?
I mean other than the fact that Dracula seems to be more human all around and vicious at the same time is kind of cool and so inconsistent too.
I remember loving this series when I was young and I still find it fascinating. Wolfman and Colan do an amazing job of giving the book a creepy, yet kind of heroic feel--tough to do.
Marv Wolfman writes the definitive comic book version of Dracula with the artful skills of Gene Colan that fits perfectly in this horror comic. I thoroughly enjoyed the special appearance of Jack Russell (terrier? How did I miss this?!!!) aka Werewolf by Night. I totally love this series. P.S. just a heads up I bought these volumes of Tomb of Dracula which were discontinued after volume 3 and later they came out with Tomb of Dracula The Complete Collection. The later volumes are much better since they have the addition of all of Dracula's appearances in other magazines and comic books making them more of a definitive collection.
Gene Colan’s art is wonderful and the writing is pulpy and more than a little soapy, but fun. It’s all written by Marv Wolfman, and I’d say he has some good ideas throughout but really only starts to hit his stride with the last few issues in this collection.
It's cheesy and dated but it was cool to see characters like Blade, Dr. Sun and Werewolf by Night. I've always thought Marv Wolfman was very underrated. He created Blade, Deathstroke and many of the Teen Titans characters but got dicked out of a lot of the royalties.
I got this earlier volume first and enjoyed it enough to follow up with the Complete volumes 1 and 3. Fun stuff, though this copy leaves out the (black-and-white) Dracula Lives magazine stories that were added in with the reprints. Re-reprints. Next prints. Whatever they are, they've got them now.
