Sams little sister Michelle thinks theres a ghost in the creepy old house their dad bought. With help from a couple of friends on the soccer team, Sam, Amy, and Michelle use an old ghost story - plus measuring tools and calculations for distance, volume, and perimeters - to figure out the truth behind . . . The Secret Ghost.
Engaging story that shows real-world applications of math and it's presented in a graphic novel format. Along with the 'Manga' moniker in the name of the series, this is sure to be a hit with elementary school-age children.
I discovered the Manga Math Mysteries series of books while doing my internship at a local elementary school library and I was intrigued by the concept.
Overall, it is a fun, fast read and shows how math is more than problems on a worksheet. I really enjoyed reading this book and will look for more of these books at the library.
Genre: Picture Books- Graphic novel/comic book Awards: None Audience: Grades 5th-7th A. This book fits into the graphic novel/comic book genre due to the layout of the pages, words, and illustrations. This book tells the story by using a layout that you see in comics. The word bubbles are used whenever a character is speaking and the white boundaries around the pictures that separate them, all are characteristics of comic books. B. A major visual element used in this book is the use of line. The pictures are separated by thick white lines, but all are put in different areas of the pages. There are clear boundaries throughout the book but the pictures still all go together seamlessly. C. This book would be good to give to a child to read on their own to further interest in reading and instil language in them as well. This book could be read aloud as well, but would work best being assigned to a child to read on their own. D. What do the children not want to tell their dad about? The ghost.
Stacy, Amy, Sam and Michelle work together to solve the mystery of the secret ghost. With a little teamwork, the children are able to help Sam and Michelle figure out just what is so haunting about their new home. The best thing about the mystery is that the children use distance and measurement to solve their problems. This book has everything from kung fu to mathematics to solving a good old mystery about a haunted house. The children soon discover that a catfish is their pesky ghost and that the restroom had a pipe that runs straight to the river. Michelle is relieved and wonders if this is a great time to tell her dad she doesn’t like pink.
Sam’s little sister Michelle can’t sleep in her bedroom. She thinks there is a ghost in there. Their father just bought a house known to be haunted. Through investigation and measurement, Sam and his friends try to find out if there is really a ghost. This is a fabulous graphic novel that includes both math and a mystery to solve.
