Book one in the Collared Series

An untrained submissive might not be what George wants, but Eric could be just what George needs.

George McAllister knows better than to hook up with an untrained submissive. He doesn't have the patience to guide a novice through his first kinky experiences. His lovers know what they are doing and do what they are told. When he sees Eric dancing on top of a table in a kinky club, he assumes the beautiful young man is an experienced submissive. Then he sees the turquoise and leather on his neck and recognises it as a collar. Someone else already owns Eric. George has no choice but to walk away.

Eric Jordan doesn't know much about kink and he has no idea why George is suddenly less than enthusiastic. But he knows what he wants and if he has to chase after George to get it, so be it. If George wants to believe the pretty bit of rock on his necklace means something kinky, that's fine. But Eric doesn't belong to anyone but himself and he won't give up possession of himself for one night in George's bed.

An untrained submissive might not be what George wants, but he could be just what George needs.

Kim is a thirty-three year old bisexual submissive from Wales (UK). First published in 2008, she has since released almost 100 BDSM erotic romance titles ranging from short stories to full length novels. Having worked with a host of fantastic e-publishers, she has just moved into self publishing.

While she has occasionally ventured towards other pairings, Kim's first love is still, and probably always will be, Male/Male stories. But, no matter what the pairing, from paranormal to contemporary, and from the sweet to the intense, everything she writes will always feature three things - Kink, Love and a Happy Ending.

Re-read January 2016 I had to knock this down to 3 stars. Yes, it was hot, but it was a casual hookup with a teasing at the end for more to come. I've happily settled into my preference for BDSM to be passionate with strong feelings and trust between the D/s pair. But it's still a good, short read.

Original review:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph that was off-the-charts HOT! I don't often give short stories 5 stars, but this one just hit me right in the gut. Highly recommended for M/M romance fans who enjoy BDSM.

George is a Dom, he's quiet and rather reserved but knows exactly what he likes, and when he sees the sexy young guy dancing on a tabletop he's immediately interested. Eric isn't really into the BDSM scene, he's just out to have a good time when he accidentally ends up falling into the arms of a tall and sexy stranger. After clearing up a misunderstanding centered around the necklace Eric wears they decide to give in to the instant attraction they feel for each other and spend the night together.

I really enjoyed this story. It's a quick read, only 45 pages, but the story is entertaining and quite sexy. While I liked both George and Eric I especially enjoyed Eric's fun chatterbox personality. George, older and experienced in BDSM is a great match for Eric, who has natural submissive tendencies but is still a strong personality in his own right. They compliment each other quite nicely. I found the sex scenes in the story to be well written and hot and at the same time enjoyed George and Eric's time out of bed as well.

If you are looking for a quick fun story with a slight kink to it that has a nice ending, HFN yet showing the promise of a future relationship, this could be the book for you.

Instead of writing a review on all of Kim Dare’s books, I’m just going to comment on “Turquoise and Leather” as I think it exemplifies her writing.
Her stories are short. Many of them are just a sampling of a “Day in the Life” taken of that precise moment when a Dom and submissive first get together.
In some author’s hands these would become boringly repetitive. But while the themes are repeated, her characters are so different they’re all worth reading. Each book has a “point” to it.
She starts with a surmise. What wuld happen if character A and character B got together in circumstance C? Well, in the case of George and Eric, a lot.
In just a few words of dialogue, Kim can draw a completely rounded believable character. Once you get to know them, her characters react and say things you’d expect them to say. However you could take the dialogue out of each book and compare them and no two would sound the same.
Take this as an example:
Eric tried to step past him. “Sorry, I've never really liked heights, well, depths really. I don't mind looking up at high things, it's drops that do it to me. It all started when I was little. I fell off this really high slide in the play ground and—”

Eric is one of those rare lovable characters you find in books. A bit like Sunny in Heidi Cullinan’s “Special Delivery” or Joey in K.A.Mitchell’s “Collision Course.” In this case, he’s a chattering geologist (you don’t find many of those in books!) who has a mind of his own and is wary of losing it.
Eric looked at the untouched bottle in front of George. “Maybe you've drunk enough already. I don't know what you're on, but the only person who owns me, is me.”

George is the perfect foil for Eric. Half amazed at himself for getting involved, but instinctively knowing he’d be a fool if he passed up on the opportunity.
Kim’s writing is fluid with no wasted words, no unnecessary backstory, no superfluous description. The conflict is all internal, not “over the top” angsty, just enough to carry interest and make you want to turn the page to see what comes next.
She follows the adage that a romance is a series of scenes between the two main characters. If action occurs off-stage it is reported on between the two characters rather than breaking the flow of the tension between the two. Take this great bit as an example:
“Cool—you found my note. I figured that contraption would be your first stop—you seem kind of over caffeinated. Do you always have breakfast naked? And did you know there's a really great café round the corner? Really sweet girl works there, her name's Lucy. She's studying for a degree in business administration.” He put all his purchases on the kitchen counter and stole a quick kiss.
“Lucy?”
Eric nodded and peered into the box. “I wasn't sure what kind of coffee you'd want, so I got the three that seemed most likely.”
“Lucy?” George repeated.
Eric smiled, distracted by the imminent prospect of breakfast and obviously bemused by George's persistence. Then he laughed. “In case you haven't noticed, George, I'm gay. I'll go along with not screwing anyone else, but you're not going to make me feel guilty about chatting to a waitress. Anyway, she's getting married next year. His name's Garrett. They're a cute couple.” He turned his attention back to the bakery box.

A lot of writers would benefit from following that formula. You get a great chance for the two characters to inter-act and show both of their personalities in just five quick paragraphs.
Kim has also written a G*A*Y series, again with different circumstances, characters and pairings. Each story has something different to say. Some may be warranting four stars rather than five, but overall, her ability to draw quick scenes, great characters with believable motivation and dialogue are what sets her books up there with the best.
If you want a quick, easy read with a bit of hot loving then I'd definitely recommend any of her m/m books. I’ll be interested to see how she fares with a full length novel.

Well, that was disappointing. I was bored and I really didn’t like George, the Dom. Even his name gives me the creeps.

It was only 31 pages, but I felt like it was never going to end… Ugh..

This is a quick-read novella that reads like a smutty short story.

Summary: Book one in the Collared Series

Why I loved this read: The kink factor is high and the descriptions are dead-on without losing the humor, romance and sensuality of a good D/s scene. Eric's non-stop mouth is both endearing and humorous as you imagine poor George trying to decide whether to throttle him or kiss him!

Excerpt: If it was just a change in the angle of his body or just Eric’s realisation his mood was different, George became bigger and more threatening. Eric’s cock leapt. He dove into the kiss with reckless abandon, threading his hands into George’s thick black hair and clinging for purchase. He tried to push his body up against George’s. His feet slid against the sheets.

Regretfully taking one hand off George, Eric fumbled over the sheet, trying to find the dropped lube and the condoms. Damn, they had to be there somewhere.

George caught his wrist and pinned it to the bed. Moaning his disapproval into their kiss, Eric tried to pull his hand out of his grasp. George wouldn’t allow it. Eric tried with the other hand, patting the sheet, hoping to find the lube on that side of the bed. George caught that hand too. He pinned it down on the other side of Eric’s head. He deepened their kiss before he pulled back.

Eric gasped up at him, fidgeting as much as he was able under the unfamiliar restriction. He tried to pull his hands out of George’s hold. It wasn’t painful but it didn’t let up either. Eric got the message — he was stuck there until George allowed him to be otherwise. Eric swallowed down the mixture of panic and pleasure whirling inside him.
Resting his weight on Eric’s wrists, George smiled at Eric trying to catch his breath.

“I’ll set the pace,” George informed him. “And when I want you ready for me, I’ll see to it that you are.”

Mini Tasting:

Why I bought it: I was browsing at Total-E-Bound and this looked interesting.

Mini-chomp:

Dislike~ I’m a reader who is always happy to be convinced by a HFN ending, but I’m not sure I really believe one where an experienced dom hooks up with a green sub, who, despite being hesitant at first, is willing to consider being collared by the next morning. Hmm...

Like~ Regardless of the above, I found this new-to-me author extremely readable and the novella had very good pacing, which is pretty important for me, especially in a short read.

So, what I think: I bought two other shorts by this author at the same time I got this and I admit that I preferred them. Of these, my fave was Gaydar. I was much more satisfied by the characters and the HFN so would suggest you go for this one if you want a taste of this author.

====================================================

‘Tasting’ is my version of a mini-review where I talk a (very) little about what I liked and disliked about a book as well as who I think the story will appeal to. Oh, and I’ve added a bit about why I picked up the book in the first place – sometimes this can be interesting to know.

This is a really nice short story. I enjoyed the book from the first till the last page.
The characters are well described, the sex scenes very appealing.

But: it’s tooooooo short... ;-)

Kim Dare has showed in other books - especially
Duck! and With a Kiss - that she writes even better when she has more pages at her disposal. In her longer books she generates characters which develop at a slower rate. Therefore the characters can explore their personalities, their likes and dislikes, their love for others. The plot has more room to enfold.
Therefore I would like, if Kim Dare would write more novels than novellas. Though her short stories are well done, her real writing talent enfolds primal in her novels to a very high level.

But back to this book… ;-)

My rating: 4 stars for a very entertaining short story.

I had this really odd feeling of having read pieces of this story before (toward the end) - must've been an excerpt I read somewhere recently.

This was a very cute, short story of a young man who isn't yet a sub catching the attention of a Dom who doesn't want to break in a newbie, but just can't help himself. I enjoyed it. You're left with the feeling that Eric is going to drive George nuts for a while until he gets used to the idea that George knowing what he's doing will make it better for both of them, and you can't help but smile at the idea of Eric pushing him back, generally mildly.

I'm actually curious about the continuation of this story once Eric more fully realizes the position he's put himself in. A follow-up to this story would be fairly easy - at some point the Dom in George is likely to snap at the brat who pushes the limits of demanding what he wants over his Dom.

Very good kinky m/m romance about a dominant who's not sure he wants to take on a very chattery untrained submissive.

Playful and light-hearted. Most of Kim Dare's shorts are like a slight-kink-filled reprieve. Kind of like stopping at Starbucks on a whim and indulging in a Venti Caramel Frappuccino. A treat to yourself, something to make you smile.

Eric is the typical Sub that Dare sticks too - hyper, talkative, somewhat batty and bound to keep his Dom off-kilter. It doesn't help that he is practically an innocent - completely unaware what the wearing of his 'collar' means. I did like how he pursued George, and how he wasn't afraid to stand up for himself about certain things, the collar included. He put that collar on himself because no one owned him except him - as was repeated a few times. I admired that.

George, while being described as kind of a 'die-hard' Dom, seems unusually pliant to Eric's whims and demands. Sure, he puts his foot down sometimes and displays his dominance a bit, but not enough for me to truly consider him as a 'die-hard' Dom.

Neither he nor Eric were into pain or slavery which I liked [a little pain is okay, but I'm sure they'd figure that out eventually; making someone bleed and cry is a no-go for me, though:]. But still, there are ways he could have displayed his dominance more than he did.

Satisfying, though. I'm sure I'll be remembering this one and re-reading it in a month or so, if not sooner. ^_^

I'm not sure that this writer really know about BDSM or if she just read about it or love some kink. This book felt really amateur to me.

Eric go to a BDSM club when he seems to have no knowledge about submission or a minimum of interest before that. The word used by George seems all foreign to him and he didn't even knew what a leather collar can signified!! When you go to this kind of club, it's because you're curious, maybe you're not sure if you like this lifestyle or not, but you go there because something of someone pick you curiosity.
George's not dominant, at least not the kind of dominant that I like. I find him soft and 'bleah'.
And to accept to be collared after one freaking night. No, no. It's a serious decision. A commitment.

A total deception for me when I know that this writer is popular with BDSM fan. Maybe it's because it's one of her older book...

It's a good short story. It keeps moving and keeps you wanting to read and leaves you wanting more at the end but not so much your pissed it's over. I like that George gets mad about the collar and Eric wearing one but having no idea what it means (it was one of my own rants about that very thing that got this story recommended to me) but was still willing to explain it. The only problem I had was the flipping back and forth between their points of views without any clear break. It’s very common in this style but I’ve never liked it.

Another great read by Kim Dare. I always end up enjoying her stories, I have yet to read one I don't like. This one is 50 pages of hot, steamy, romantic, m-m loving. ;) If you enjoy m-m, D/s, oral, foot fetishes, and of course romance and a HEA then this book is for you. Now, feet are a huge ick factor for me and even so, after reading this I found myself reconsidering it. Lol Miss. Dare definitely made it sound super sexy. So even if that's not your thing give T&L a try, I don't think you'll be dissapointed. Enjoy!

Oh I loved this book. As I said after reading blood slave I am not really a fan of D/s. However, in the books I’ve read from Kim Dare (so far) I actually like the individuality of the subs. They have their own take on how they are & the Dom’s have to comply (because there played at their own game – possibly innocently & not maliciously but to everyone’s satisfaction). All I wish is that it could be a little longer

This is a short-short novella, so saying much more about it than the blurb would take us into spoiler territory. It covers a single night, when the experienced dom George picks up the inexperienced (as a sub) Eric. They both have their doubts about whether or not it's a good idea, but they both seem drawn to each other. It's a sweet story, but as with most shorter works, there's room for a lot more story than what you get.

Kim Dare would have to be one of my favourite authors. Despite the fact she writes, almost exclusively, short stories, all of them are fresh & original. This story was fantastic too. I loved Eric's bratty-ness & George's firm, but loving dominance. They will make a lovely couple & I hope that subsequent books in the series show how their relationship develops. If you like sugar kink; if you like Kim Dare; then this is essential reading.

I really like the two MC they are hot together and I always love the grumpy Dom bratty sub mix. Eric is all over the place and it is fun watching George try handle the talkative sub who mind goes all over the place. Most of the book is sex and I have to say this is probably the first foot fetish sex I've ever read. This book gives me just enough character development to make me really wish there was a squeal to it.

I liked this one very much - it is short but very well balanced. The stroy is about George and Eric's first night together which is also the beginning of their relationship.
I had to laugh out sometimes because Eric is so funny - the guy just can't shut up :) I would like to read more about George and Eric.

Yet another fun story from Kim. I really enjoyed the banter between Eric and George. I could almost feel Eric's hyperness and loved how George found ways to counteract it. As with most stories I read these days, I wish it were longer. I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment of this series but I wish it was more Eric and George!

This was a quick read and quite enjoyable. I liked the interaction between the characters and thought they were believable.

I would have liked it to be a bit longer, though and would not object to seeing these characters again in a sequel.

Aw, man. This had me grinning through the whole damn thing. Eric is adorable and George's reaction to him is perfect. It's a hot little story, but what struck me-- as is always the case for me with Kim Dare-- was how sweet and funny it was. Loved it.

The only reason I did not give this story a 5 is because of the length I would LOVE to see where these two go next.

George is a Dominant at a club for a night of fun and Eric is a submissive who doesnt know it. Hot and interesting introductory tale.

When George first meets Eric, he mistakenly thinks Eric has a master due to the leather and turquoise necklace he's wearing. He then finds out Eric is a novice to submission. Despite his thoughts that he doesn't want a novice, George can't stop his attraction to the talkative and hyper Eric.
